Kadina Medical Associates Staff Profile Gavin Woods - Nurse Manager
What made you decide to become a nurse? I was a St John’s Cadet during my teenage years and found that I had an affinity with the caring professions. Having completed a Diploma of Teaching and unable to find a permanent position due to an oversupply, I applied for a Nurse Attendant position at the newly built Homestead Nursing Home in Kadina. I began work there the day the facility opened. A year later I gained entry to the Student Registered Nurse programme at Wallaroo Hospital. I was the last student ever to train at Wallaroo. What do you enjoy most about working at Kadina Medical Associates? KMA provides an environment which allows me to explore all my skills as a clinician as well as a manager. The doctors provide plenty of work to keep us all mentally and physically stimulated. Leaving shift work behind in my former job has definitely improved my quality of life and provided more regular home time which allowed me to explore activities outside of the home that I enjoy. What are you hobbies/interests outside of work? I exhibit many types of flowers; mainly roses, dahlias, chrysanthemums and daffodils at state and interstate shows. Poultry have been a life-long interest also. I judge flowers and poultry all around Australia. I also breed finches and goldfish. Five facts you did not know about Gavin! • I exhibited Devon Rex cats for a period of time, I own one currently. • An ancestor on my mother’s side was the first Mayor of Kadina (Paul Roach). • I am the current president of the Rose Society of South Australia and
travelling to France in May for the World Rose Conference. • I am a compulsive reader mostly of texts relating to my hobbies and also
biographies of famous people. • I am hopeless at sport, playing only 2 games of tennis as a child. I hate losing
so retired with a 1:1 win\loss record.

Its that time of the year again.
Flu season is here! If you would like to have your flu shot please see one of
our friendly reception staff to book in to
one of our flu clinics.
Most specialists will not see patients without a referral
from their General Practitioner.
Please make sure that you have an appointment with
your GP prior to your appointment with the specialist to get an up to date referral.
Most doctors will do the referral while you wait. If you wish we can fax your referral
directly to the specialist.
Influenza Vaccination
We are now offering our patients the opportunity to be immunised against the influenza virus. This can be a debilitating condition with many deaths Australia wide each year as a result of the flu. About 20% of Australians are affected by influenza each year. When someone who has influenza sneezes, coughs or even talks, the virus is expelled into the air and may be inhaled by anyone close by. The flu is highly contagious with children being a major transmitter of the virus. Influenza can survive for: • An hour or more in the air in enclosed environments • More than eight hours on hard surfaces such as stainless steel and plastic • Up to five minutes on the hands after transfers from other surfaces. The influenza vaccination is 70–90% effective in preventing influenza specific illness in healthy adults. The strains of flu may vary each year so for continued protection annual vaccination is required. Protection develops about two weeks after receiving the influenza vaccine and lasts about one year. The World Health Organisation recommends which strains are included in the flu vaccine each year. The flu season begins each year around the beginning of March. Kadina Medical Associates offer vaccination at group clinics during the weeks following release of the vaccine. If you have a GP appointment, you can also request to be vaccinated at that appointment.
Patients who meet the government criteria can be immunised at no cost. Those who meet that criteria are:
• People aged 65 years and older
• Pregnant women, at any time during their pregnancy
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months to under five years and 15 years and older • Any person over six months of age with a condition predisposing them to
severe influenza illness requiring regular medical follow-up or hospitalisation, including children aged six months to 10 years undergoing long-term aspirin therapy
• Cardiac disease
• Chronic respiratory conditions
• Immunocompromising conditions
• Diabetes and other metabolic disorders
• Chronic neurological conditions
• Renal disease
• Haematological disorders
Whooping Cough
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a serious, contagious, respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella Pertussis. The disease begins like a cold and then the characteristic cough develops. This cough may last up to three months, even after antibiotic treatment is completed and the person is no long-er infectious. The 'whoop' (which is not always obvious) is due to a deep breath at the end of a bout of coughing. Vomiting after coughing is common. Whooping cough is particularly dangerous for babies less than six months of age. They are affected more seriously by the disease than older children or adults, and are more likely to develop complications. One in every 200 babies who contract whooping cough will die. Immunisation is the best way to reduce the risk of whooping cough. Consult with your local doctor or nursing staff to ensure your immunisations are up to date.
