    Business Transformation Project:May 2014 - September 2014 (30 credits)

Written to the same standard as a dissertation, the project will provide students with a means of developing further the skills and knowledge gained

on the MBA, by application to a specific organisational issue or problem. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in the design of a business

enhancement project, application of appropriate methods of investigation, management of the change process and maintenance of vision in the face of

    the vicissitudes of business realities.

    Syllabus

Whilst there is no set syllabus, the MBA action/applied project provide the

students with the opportunity to study and research a specific organisation

area/topic in depth. The main focus of this, however, is not as a pure piece of

research, but as a piece of action research where the organisation or industry

directly benefits from the planned intervention of the student using appropriate

methods of research and change management.

Tuition is tailored to the specific needs of the student as agreed with the

academic supervisor on the basis of the students proposal. Students will be

expected to be familiar with the theory and empirical research in their chosen

area of study, and to demonstrate their ability to review and apply the concepts

    and techniques critically.

They will also be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the selection and

application of the appropriate methods to investigate and progress the businesstransformation.

Investigation may involve case study analysis, comparative study relative to

sector norms, and/or questionnaire or interview-based study.

The research may take one of several forms, for example:

    Aninvestigationofamanagementororganisationalpractice,strongly

    supported by reference to the relevant theory and concepts;

    Theresearchanddesignofasolutionofapracticalmanagerialor

I am appointed to be part of the management of this new fleet. This is why I was

looking for such a programme so that I could hone my skills and upgrade my

    Business Transformation Project

The business transformation project is one of the most exciting phases of the programme. It offers students an

exceptional opportunity to fully integrate all the concepts, topics and issues they have been studying throughout the

duration of the MBA and put that knowledge to work in the real world.

The module allows students to examine a business or industry specific problem from a consultative, research and / orentrepreneurial perspective. This highly practical approach is critical in facilitating the transition from theory to execution,

thus providing the students with an invaluable learning opportunity.

The benefits of this phase are extensive for both the individual and their organisation. The individual benefits from

being able to apply their new-found skills and knowledge in a practical context, focused on industry issues they are truly

passionate about. The organisation benefits through the contributions of a highly trained and motivated individual working

on solutions to challenges that they want solved!

This is just a small selection of the type of issues being addressed by students on the programme. Its plain to see that

these future leaders will play a key role in shaping the future of their organisations and the industry as a whole. Wed very

much like you to be a part of this elite group too.

Below is a sample list of projects that current and past students have been working on. It will give you a flavour of the

Captain Rodger MacDonald, MSc, Secretary General, International Federation of Shipmasters

Captain MacDonald served initially with British India up to acting Chief Officer. After a year as Flight

After 25 years of senior management positions within Ocean Inchcape Ltd Captain MacDonald was appointed

Director of Faculty at the National Sea Training Centre, part of North West Kent College, an Associate College of

    theUniversityofGreenwich.InAugust2006,heretiredfromNorthWestKentCollegeandcontinuestorepresent

    theinterestsofShipMastersinhisroleasSecretaryGeneralofIFSMAwhichisanon-governmentalorganisationwith consultancy status at IMO.

He is also very active in supporting students in a number of Lloyds Maritime Academy courses and in 2005,

Captain MacDonald was awarded the LSM Lifetime Achievement Award at the Asia Pacific Manning and Training

Conference in recognition of his contribution in the sphere of education and training.

    1. How would you describe the education and training opportunities available to those wishing to pursuemanagement roles in the maritime industry?

We need to consider three key groups here:

First the seafarers who are wishing to work ashore in a management role within the industry. Secondly those in the maritimeindustry ashore who wish to advance into senior management roles. Thirdly those outside the industry with no maritimeexperience who would like to pursue a new career in the maritime industry, (this could range from school leavers to maturemanagers in other industries). In the first group there are several opportunities with distance learning courses up to diplomalevel both in general ship management and other specialised management fields such as Superintendents, Crewing Managers,Shipping Agents etc.

In the second group most maritime nations have university courses that offer Master degree programmes linked to theindustry. These may be quite specific such as the American University which offers a masters degree on maritime policyaimedprimarilyatUSCGoffices.

In the third group, unless they can be guided by those in the industry, it seems there is little to offer as the industry iscomplex and tends to recruit experienced people from within. As far as school leavers who are interested in the industry, but do not wish to go to sea, there is no obvious course (in the UK anyway).

    2. What do you think has been the largest factor for those not progressing?

For seafarers the major hurdle has been that their employers (ship owners and managers) are reluctant to encouragecompetent officers to seek shore employment. However there has been a change of attitude recently as they now try toencourage school leavers by saying there are great opportunities ashore after their seagoing experience.Another factor for all groups is time and cost to attend full time universities.

    3. Could you describe the challenging issues you foresee within the industry and what measures would helpavoid / prevent / steer us away from it?

Ship managers face a number of challenging issues not least of all is recruiting and retaining seafarers. The humanelement; fatigue, training, cultural diversity, proper training etc will need competent managing.

The environmental issues will be extremely challenging over the next few years especially to meet the huge cuts in airpollution that are demanded. New ship designs especially in container and cruise ships are breaking through unknownand untested territory. New technology in machinery, navigation, cargo loading etc, will require new skills to manage thesechanges.

    4. As a leading industry educator, how vital do you regard it for those operating within the sector to have atailored qualification such as this MBA?

It has been known for years that the industry is suffering from a shortage of skilled seafarers. In the past much of therecruitment for shore based positions had been from those leaving the sea. There is now a shortage of competentmanagers throughout the industry. The demographic profile indicates that there is a desperate need for encouragingwell qualified people into the industry. This MBA course is a very important tool to provide those people.

    5. What is the industry saying about this MBA programme?

The International Federation of Shipmasters Association fully endorses this programme. We believe it is of benefit to boththe seafarers wishing to seek shore management and the industry as a whole.

From conversations with other industry representatives I have found that there is a consensus that views this MBAprogramme in a most positive way to offer professional advancement in shipping.

    6. Would you say that this MBA opens doors to opportunities that would otherwise be closed to those without it?

This is hard to answer, but certainly this MBA would put the applicant in a stronger position than competitors without it.

    7. What would your advice be to someone thinking about undertaking this MBA, but is unsure as to whether tocommit to it?

Ask yourself where you wish to be in five years time. If your wish is to be a senior manager in the exciting maritimeindustry, then take this course!

Merits of this MBA from an Award Winning

    Student Testimonials

On reflection when I look back at myself

today, I am surprised at the knowledge

gained and skills that I have acquired in my

first year studying with MiddlesexUniversity and Lloyds Maritime Academy.

The course content has been very well

    prepared by experienced professors. The

guidance given by module tutors has been very helpful.

The supportive administration staffs, the resource section,

the library section are 24/7 in attendance and I think I

    cannot expect anything better.

In addition I have had the opportunity to network across the

globe, each an expert in their chosen field. We have had

very productive discussions leading to and developing our

teamwork capabilities.I look forward to an extension of the wonderful experience

    this year.

    Capt. Balajee Jayaraman, Master Mariner

A very demanding course requiring individual commitment

from all participating students. Such advice should not

go unheeded to the prospective student, but of course

with commitment comes reward, which means you will

have earned your Masters in Business Administration,

    specialising in Shipping & Logistics.

Colin Manchester, Head of Shipping Coverage,

    Americas, RBS Corporate Banking Division

My work challenges and portfolio keep

increasing everyday, and I believe a very

intensive MBA like this one could help to

position me to better manage my increasing

responsibilities. I heard of this MBA about

June last year but could not commence

immediately because of my tight work

schedule. I noticed my schedule got even tighter this year. Ihad no choice than to start TODAY because TOMORROW

    may be worse.

Moses Obichie, Project Officer, Nigeria LNG Ltd

This MBA has challenged me academically

and personally. I have found the material

relevant and applicable. Embarking on this

type of distance learning course at

Masters level is developing my ability to

manage time, stress and priorities. I am

    really enjoying the experience.

Peter L. Jackson, Head of Department, Projects &

    Technology, Seaspan Ship Management Ltd

I know there are a lot of distance learning MBA

programmes in the market but how many of them would

    take a student with a three-email-a-day and 15kb-limit-

per-email (when out at sea which is almost 8 months ofthe year) limit with no attachments allowed, candidate in

their stride and not just impart knowledge to him but, more

importantly, broaden his horizons and open his world to the

    non-technical aspect of his field.

If you know of any MBA programmes with teaching and

administrative staff so co-operative and so patient in

todays fast moving world I would like to know of them,

because I really dont think there are any others, who

would, should I say take on this challenge of educating

a technologically disadvantaged (with regards to on line

access at sea) student in their programme and doing a, if

I may be allowed to say, a darn good job. Most only lookfor students who can take on the challenge of a demanding

online programme but, what for me distinguishes this from

the others, is that here even the programme is willing to

take up the challenge of a student like me with very limited

    internet access.

Above is not just a testimonial but more of what I feel from

within and I truly thank all who till now have made an effort

to keep me up to date in every respect with all facets of the

    MBA.

    Pavan V. Abhyankar, Chief Engineer,

    Dynacom Tankers Management Ltd

Taking the MBA in Shipping and Logistics

has widened my knowledge in particular on

the economics of shipping and the impact

of environmental challenges. It has also

    radically sharpened my leadership,

    communication and analytical skills to

prepare me to be a better manager in the

Shipping and Logistics field. Thank you Middlesex

University and Lloyds Maritime Academy for creating and

supporting the programme. I look forward to a Doctoratedegree in a similar field to expand my research in Shipping.

Ooi Eng Hai, COO, Best Chain Global Shipping

An excellent opportunity for anyone involved

in international trade to not only develop

their critical thinking skills and industry best

practices but also to enhance knowledge on

    industrys main challenges, trends and

opportunities. For me, it was a very

strategic milestone in my life which I am

very proud to have taken. Thanks to all crew on the course.

Middlesex Universitys MBA in Shipping and

    Logistics programme was an educational

journey that I really enjoyed. Apart from the

knowledge I gained, it mostly helped me atwork. It was not only an education in

business. It was a development program,

which prepared me for success as a

strategic manager. As well as the key areas of knowledge,

success requires that I can take decisions, exercise good

judgment as to when and when not to take risks, manage

change as well as day-to-day management, and

demonstrate a range of related competences. This is more

than just having a skill it is also about being able to make

effective use of these in my professional context.

With the precious help, criticism and feedback of the

Tutors I experienced a unique educational journey that willremains unforgettable in my memory

Sure, MBA studies were not an easy walk

and required lots of nonstop efforts

throughout last 2 years. Actually, I had to

dedicate all my free time for that, but on

the other hand Im delighted by well

    structured university arrangements of

    entirely on-line studies, by the

contemporary materials used and by cooperativeness of

Studying the MBA in Shipping & Logistics

    by Distance Learning

The MBA in Shipping & Logistics consists of an extensive collection of distance education activities and resources.

Included is a carefully designed blend of reading and work to be completed independently, practical activities that will be

undertaken for feedback, formal assessments, and collaborative learning with other members of the programme, which

will generally include some online communication and discussion.

All the necessary materials, resources and guides for study will be provided.

The basis for the structure of learning will be the form in which the materials appear on the Universitys Virtual Learning

Environment, My Learning, which will be the main medium of study. For a demonstration of how the online platform works

    please visit www.mba4shipping.com/demo

You will have online access to a tutor for each module where they will be available via email and phone at specific times

for direct real-time support. The tutor will answer your queries about the content, give advice and support on assessments

    as well as facilitate discussions.

A member of the universitys e-learning team will always be available to help you with any technical difficulties should

these arise. The university help-desk is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Assessed work will be completed in the manner prescribed by the specific modules materials.

There will not be any examinations requiring attendance at a venue, but there will be certain online time-controlled tests

in some modules. You will be required to take these within a specific time period. As they will be online, they can be

completed at a location of choice.

Full details of how this MBA is delivered are issued to students in the programme handbook prior to its start. Please

contact us if you would like to discuss programme delivery in more depth.

Is distance learning right for me?Distance learning can be highly beneficial to a large variety of people.

As with any kind of educational programme, the increasingly popular distance learning delivery comes with advantages

and disadvantages. We recommend you carefully consider these in order to be sure your personal needs, strengths,

career goals and maybe corporate objectives are met.

Benefits of distance learning include: Flexibility - You can undertake the course from just about anywhere, providing you have the right communications

means a computer and internet connection. This allows you to work when and where it is most convenient without

having to squeeze scheduled classes in to an already busy life.

Lowered costs - Prices for online courses are generally significantly cheaper than their classroom-based tutor-led

equivalents and avoid the usual substantial additional costs, such as commuting, accommodation, meals etc. that are

incurred when learning away from home.

Learn while working - As distance learning can usually be completed to your own schedule, you can keep working full

    time whilst studying. Keeping your job gives you more income, experience and stability while completing your course;

giving you less to worry about and more time to focus on your studies.

Professional classmates - Mix and network via online forums with like-minded individuals on a global basis.

Learningstyle - people learn in different ways. Distance learning has many benefits for students as you take control of

your preferred means of studying our material, and the module tutors will help ensure you stay motivated and help you

    plan your study schedule.

Socialinteraction - Some distance learning providers can leave you feeling isolated during your study, but on the MBA

you always have your programme leader, module leaders, module tutors, programme coordinator and fellow studentsavailable via interactive course forums, email and phone so that support is available and you can benefit from all

    important social learning.
