Well the year has startedand children and staffare all back happily restedafter the holidays. We areon a very exciting journeythis year as we are work-ing towards being the firstNew Zealand School to beaccredited as a WilliamGlasser Quality school.Wehave employed SharPeterson as our leaderand mentor to help uswork towards this. Ouraim is a school wherechildren achieve qualitywork, relationships basedon trust and progresshappens through selfevaluation. Shar workswith teachers in the class-room and working withchildren helping themto solve hassels usingReality Therapy (this is acounselling/questioningprocess.) This pro-gramme is designed tohelp children make life-long changes. So watchthis space!

Our curriculum focus thisyear as a school is Literacyand quality assessmentpractises. We are also tri-alling a new road safetyprogramme to help ensurechildren can and do cross

Stanmore Road in a safemanner. Janet Pask is thelead teacher trialling thisnew programme in herclassroom and then thiswill be implemented schoolwide. It is a wonderfulprogramme that works inconjunction with the PoliceEducation programme.

I was the guest speakerat Christchurch TeachersCollege to the third yeargraduant teachers aboutteaching and learning lastweek. It was a challengingbut enjoyable opportunityto talk to future teachersabout relationship build-ing and our school'svision of education.

I look forward to an excit-ing year and already theschool and staff have awonderful sense of sharedpurpose and like mindedphilosophies to make adifference for children'slearning both now and inthe future:

Meditation at Avebury HouseAt 7:30 pm on Wednes-day evenings theTibetan Buddhist group,Karma Thigsum Choeling(KTC), hosts a Chenrezigmeditation practice in theCora Wilding Room. Thepurpose of Chenrezig med-itation is to develop loveand compassion for all be-ings. The practice involveschanting, visualisationand silent meditation.Chenrezig is the Buddha ofcompassion, and is known

by the mantra "om manipadme hum".

Everyone is welcome toattend the meditation orto join us for a cup of teaat 8:30 pm following themeditation. This is a goodtime to come and meetmembers of the group, askquestions and get to knowmore about KTC and theChenrezig practice.

The other day when I was walking down FitzgeraldAvenue, I noticed a signpost on the corner of HeywoodTerrace and Fitzgerald Ave. After reading it, I came homefeeling a little less 'world weary' with all the 21st centuryhype. I kept thinking about what it was like over 100 yearsago where I live today. Oh! to have a time machine.

Top marks to whomever came up with the ideas to cre-ate these little treasuresscattered around Christ-church and especially inRichmond where I havespent a large part of mylife.

Housing - a Richmond issueI am fascinated by the fun-damental human problemof how people get and keepshelter. And I am convincedthat we have yet to find allthe answers! Housingpolicy is, to me, one of themost exciting areas of gov-ernment. And, bringing itlocal, Richmond illustratesjust about every key aspectof New Zealand's hous-ing problem - and somesolutions as well. Threequestions dominate thesector:

Question one is will themarket alone deliver?Certainly it can't in Rich-mond at present. Bothcentral and local govern-

ment provide housing invarious parts of the neigh-

bourhood, which is run toavoid a loss, but not makea profit for, the ratepayer ortaxpayer. Provided private-ly, it would cost the tenantmore. Without central gov-ernment accommodationsupplement, which totalsnearly $1 million a year forpeople living in Richmond,private rental housingwould be too highly pricedfor many people on lower

incomes. Although thingshave got much better in

the last four years, there arestill local people whose renttakes over half their weeklyincome. Community agen-cies are also playing a bigger

role in providing housing,mainly in the communitycare sector.

Question two is what

new ways there are toimprove housing choice

and quality7. I'm keen forGovernment to be able tohelp first-time buyers tobuy their own place, espe-cially to free up state or citycouncil housing spaces forothers. I would like closer

monitoring of the qualityof rental housing, since wehear too many stories in

my office of poor condi-tions and tenants unwillingto complain. I would likesupport for people to buildtheir own property, and totake an environmentally

friendly approach to theirnew homes.

And question three is what

Reminiscences of a Richmond Resident - Part IIThe Richmond Club onStanmore Road used to bea small grocery shop. Fur-ther on was Burns' shoestore for boot and shoerepairs and next door wasDave Harris' Blacksmithshop, then the Post officeand finally the ChemistShop. Anny Hine was theearly chemist. There usedto be Razers' grocery shopacross the road (see photo)with a butcher's shop nextdoor. I can remember see-ing a man going into theshop with gold sovereignsin his hands.

Across the road from theCaltex Station there usedto be a 'Peddler's Lane'. Itran right down to MedwayStreet. The Kemp fam-ily lived on one side of thelane and Ray Kemp wasmy mate. His father kepta horse and cart. On theother side of Kemp's placewas a farm with one or twocows running around. Juston the corner of the Laneand Medway Street wasa large site with a willow

tree growing on it. Thelane was lovely to walk ondown to the Avon River.We used to ride Kemp's oldhorse on the old road ...those were the days ... nopollution, lovely fresh airand the scent of old bushesgrowing down the sides ofthe Lane.

The drive into AveburyHouse from North AvonRoad had a row of firtrees on the west sideand I could travel alongthe tops without touch-

ing the ground. No statehouses then, just a largepaddock where Mr Berekept his horse. Mr Berebuilt the shops ont hecorner of Chrystal Street.There used to be a fish andchip shop, now it's a hair-dresser and dairy.

There was a good tramservice into town in thosedays, but sometimes thetrarn came off the rails andthey had to use a bottle jackto get it back on. To thebest of my memory on the

corner of Worcester Streetthere used to be a woodand coal merchant and theold swimming baths (nowgone) were next to theRichmond School.

The ditch in GowertonPlace is all that is left ofthe creek where the earlysettlers used to get theirwater supplies. I believethe water came from aspring from the back of ahouse in Forth Street.

Long gone - it was demolished about 1940 ~ is this old grocery on thecorner of North Avon and Stanmore Rds, in Christchurch. The deliveryvan is thought to be a Model A Ford. A.E. McKenzie, of Christchurch,whose grandfather owned the shop, sent in the photograph, comment-ing: 'My grandmother had the haberdashery around the corner andprobably sold the ties advertised.'
