WELCOME TO THE 32nd ANNUAL FESTIVAL MIAMI!

Welcome to the 32nd annual Festival Miami, presented by UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, and the Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music.

Festival Miami is renowned for bringing together hundreds of guest, faculty, and student artists in a month-long cultural celebration that is like no other. I invite you to select several concerts to attend, as we truly put our heart and soul into creating a unique festival experience for you!

I know you join me in thanking UHealth for its generous partnership, which ensures that residents of Coral Gables and surrounding communities are able to enjoy an incredible array of uplifting concerts by world-class artists so close to home.

This is an exciting time for UHealth and for Coral Gables as we near completion of the new UHealth at Coral Gables in the Lennar Foundation Medical Center. Located at the corner of Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Dickinson Drive, this specially designed outpatient facility will provide convenient access to the world renowned experts at the University of Miami. Opening in late 2016, UHealth at Coral Gables will provide primary care, extended hours/no appointment needed and specialized care for a broad spectrum of health needs including cancer, eye, women’s health, sports medicine, spine, heart, memory disorders, dermatology and more.

I envision a day when we will all gather together to enjoy lively music at the grand opening of UHealth at Coral Gables in the Lennar Foundation Medical Center. Until then, please enjoy Festival Miami and the camaraderie of sharing great music in the company of neighbors and friends.

Sincerely,

Shelton G. BergDean, Frost School of MusicPatricia L. Frost Professor of Music

¡BIENVENIDOS AL 32o FESTIVAL ANUAL MIAMI!

Dear Friends of Festival Miami,

You are about to hear some wonderful music, and when you leave here, you will go home happier and healthier than you were when you came in.

Why is that? Because medical research has shown that music has many healthful effects — reducing stress, boosting immune function, aiding memory, improving blood flow, elevating your mood, even easing pain. You sleep better and wake more refreshed.

At UHealth, we are excited to sponsor the music of the 32nd annual Festival Miami because we are committed to making you healthier in every way we can.

A visible, and growing, sign of our commitment is The Lennar Foundation Medical Center currently under construction right here on the Coral Gables campus. This five-story, 200,000-square-foot, multispecialty facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016 — when next year’s Festival Miami will be in full swing.

The center will offer you and your neighbors easy access to the world-class services of the Miller School of Medicine and UHealth – the University of Miami Health System, including specialty care from the renowned Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

But right now, sit back and enjoy the music. It’s one prescription you can write for yourself,

and you’ll feel better for it.

DAVE BERGSinger-songwriter Dave Berg has composed some of the biggest country hits of the past five years, including the No. 1 hits “Somebody” by Reba McEntire; “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows)” and “These Are My People” by Rodney Atkins; and “Moments” by Emerson Drive. In 2007 his co-written song “Stupid Boy,” recorded by Keith Urban, earned a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance. Berg has received Songwriter of the Year honors from American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; Billboard; and Nashville Songwriters Association International.

His latest songwriting activity includes “Wine after Whiskey,” which appears on Carrie Underwood’s latest album, Blown Away, and “While He Still Knows Who I Am,” which Kenny Chesney recorded for Welcome to the Fishbowl.

Berg has recently signed a worldwide co-publishing agreement with Los Angeles and New York-based Downtown Music Publishing. Not Quite So Alone, Berg’s upcoming full-length album, will be released by Downtown imprint Mercer Street Records.

SHELTON G. BERGPianist Shelton G. “Shelly” Berg is widely acclaimed for his innovative approaches to performance, composition, and pedagogy. Berg has worked with top music industry professionals worldwide and orchestrated music for television, motion pictures, and major orchestras. He has conducted and directed orchestras at venues including the White House, Hollywood Bowl, Royal Albert Hall, and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

In 2014 Berg received two Grammy Award nominations for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for “What a Wonderful World” and for co-producer on Gloria Estefan: The Standards. He previously earned a Grammy nomination for his arrangement “Out There” on Lorraine Feather’s Tales of the Unusual. Berg’s album Blackbird reached No. 1 in U.S. jazz radio. He recently recorded Rhapsody in Blue with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the solo album The Nearness of You. Other projects include Arturo Sandoval’s Grammy Award-winning Dear Diz (Every Day I Think of You) and Latin Grammy-winning A Time for Love.

Berg is Dean and Patricia L. Frost Professor of Music at the University of Miami Phillip and Patricia Frost School of Music. He was previously McCoy/Sample Professor of Jazz Studies at USC Thornton School of Music and past president of the International Association for Jazz Education.

CYRILLE AIMÉEVocalist Cyrille Aimée has been called “a revelation” by the New York Daily News, and The New York Times called her major label release, It’s a Good Day, “a bravura turn.” Aimée’s vocals caught the attention of Stephen Sondheim, who cast her in an Encores Special Presentation starring Bernadette Peters at New York City’s City Center in November 2013.

As a child in France, Aimée would sneak out of her bedroom to wander into nearby gypsy encampments for the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She fell in love with the music and way of life, and years later she would travel across Europe singing on street corners with musician friends. On one such trip, she found herself at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she won first prize in the vocal competition, which financed her first album.

Aimée was a finalist for the Star Academy, a French version of American Idol. However, when she learned she would have to sing what she was told, her gypsy spirit rebelled, and she left the competition. She now tours the world with her band and in a duo with Brazilian guitarist Diego Figueiredo.

TONY ARATASinger-songwriter Tony Arata has worked with the top stars in country music today, including Garth Brooks, Suzy Bogguss, Trisha Yearwood, and Emmylou Harris. Arata’s “The Dance” won Song of the Year at The Academy of Country Music, receiving a Country Music Association and a Grammy nomination, plus a Most Performed Song nod in Radio and Records magazine.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, Arata began performing his songs in local bands in college. After he moved to Nashville, his soulful style got the attention of people like Allen Reynolds and Garth Brooks, who to date has recorded seven of Arata’s songs.

Arata had Top 5 records with “Here I Am” for Patty Loveless, “I’m Holding My Own” for Lee Roy Parnell, and “Dreaming With My Eyes Open” for Clay Walker. Artists who have recorded his songs include Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Don Williams, Reba McEntire, and Hal Ketchum, among others. In 1984 Arata recorded for Noble Vision Records, charting two singles on the Hot Country Songs charts. In 2000 he released Way Back Then and to date has three solo albums featuring new songs, covers, and guest appearances by many of Nashville’s finest musicians, like Brooks, Loveless, and Parnell.

Tindall studied under top musicians including Velvet Brown, Mel Culbertson, Warren Deck, and Steven Mead. He holds degrees in tuba performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado at Boulder, the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and Pennsylvania State University.

Tindall is currently assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at the Frost School of Music. He has served previously on the faculties of Ithaca College, Eastern Michigan University, Penn State University, and the Conservatoire National de Region in France. He is a Denis Wick-London artist and design specialist and a Buffet Group tuba/euphonium artist and clinician.

RICHARD TODDRichard Todd is associate professor of French horn at the Frost School of Music. From Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl, Todd has earned international acclaim as one of the finest horn soloists today. Gold medal winner of the 1980 Concours Internationale Toulon, he is a Pro Musicis International Foundation Award winner and is continually expanding the boundaries of the horn world. Renowned for his performances that “are simply startling in their dexterity” with “a heart-clutching sound,” he breaks down the barriers of music, being equally at home in all areas including classical and jazz.

Now residing in Miami, Todd maintains a rigorous coast-to-coast concert schedule, including performances as principal horn with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He has recorded on over 1,000 motion picture soundtracks and has appeared and recorded with such great performers as Sinatra, Streisand, and Madonna, and as a jazz artist with Clark Terry, Ray Brown and Woody Herman. He recorded two albums with Andre Previn, What Headphones (jazz) and French Chamber Music (classical) and was personally selected by Gunther Schuller to record his Concerto No.1. He has also recorded solo albums. Previously on the faculty at USC Thornton School of Music, and the Henry Mancini Institute, Todd is in constant demand as a lecturer, clinician, and festival artist, and is a consultant for Hans Hoyer Horns, where he assists in the development of horn and mouthpiece designs.

SVETOSLAV R. STOYANOVSvet Stoyanov is associate professor of instrumental performance and program director of percussion at the Frost School of Music. Praised by The New York Times for his “understated but unmistakable virtuosity” and a “winning combination of gentleness and fluidity,” Bulgarian-born Stoyanov is a winner of the 2003 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.

Stoyanov made his New York City debut at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall as a co-soloist, premiering the Philip Glass Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra. He has performed as a soloist with the Chicago, Seattle, American Symphony Orchestras and The New York Pops, to name a few, and at prominent festivals worldwide. An active and passionate chamber musician, Stoyanov works with violinist Moni Simeonov (The SemiDuo project), a 2Piano/2Percussion ensemble (Hammer/Klavier), and a contemporary music collaborative with flutist Claire Chase.

Stoyanov’s album Percussive Counterpoint was released in 2009 to a great acclaim and features a transcription of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint for marimba and vibes, and a video performance of Thierry de Mey’s Musique de Tables, a theatrical “ballet” for three sets of hands. In addition to his diverse performance career, Stoyanov is actively involved with educational outreach and presents numerous clinics and workshops.

SYLVAN STREETBandleader, composer, and bassist Jay Rees formed the eight-piece jazz fusion band Sylvan Street in 2008 to perform his innovative collection of original jazz compositions. Rees has appeared throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan, performing with such notable jazz artists as Jimmy Cobb, Lenny White, Paul Horn, and Randy Sandke, and has toured with The Lettermen as bassist, musical director, and featured player on their album release Now and Then.

Rees has a diverse catalog of original music written for jazz, wind ensemble, concert bands, and athletic bands, commissioned and performed by major universities and high schools nationwide. A native of Detroit, Rees worked in Los Angeles and Tucson before recently bringing his wealth of experience as conductor, composer, arranger, and performer to his position as professor of music at his alma mater, the Frost School of Music.

Sylvan Street brings together the talents of trumpeter Chad Shoopman, a Powell Signature Trumpet artist who designed the “Shoop” lead mouthpiece for Warburton Mouthpieces; trumpeter Kenny Smukal, lead trumpet and jazz soloist with the United States Air Force “Airmen of Note;” saxophonist Kelland Thomas of the Firecracker Jazz Band; Los Angeles guitarist and Frost School alum Frank Browne; Chicago drummer and vocalist Andrew Hix; pianist Evan Rees of the Motown Miracles; and renowned ethno-percussionist Michael Faltin. Sylvan Street is a Summit Records recording artist whose appearance at Festival Miami coincides with the release of the band’s third album, Feedback Loop. Prior albums include The Perfect Leaf and Here in America, featuring the group’s hit music video “Free The Toronto Nine.”

Commmunity outreach is an important facet of Festival Miami’s educational and cultural mission. As part of its objective to make the arts and culture accessible

to everyone, Festival Miami presents select events free of charge and offers free admission to several local school music groups, social service organizations, and senior citizen centers. Master classes with visiting artists are also free and open to the public. This season Broadway singer John Easterlin, Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, jazz singer Cyrille Aimée, and jazz organist Joey DeFrancesco will hold master classes and speak to audiences. These enrichment opportunities are an integral part of Festival Miami.

In addition, Festival Miami invites local high school music directors to bring their students for free to various concerts and master classes. Community service hours are available to students interested in volunteering as ushers for concerts. Festival Miami offers free and discounted tickets to University of Miami students. By presenting these unique opportunities, students not only enjoy Festival Miami’s wide array of concerts but also meet and greet the artists behind the music.

Festival Miami hopes to impact each student’s life as well as encourage senior citizens to attend more cultural events. Last year, the Miami Jewish Health System and a group of low-income seniors attended concerts at reduced rates. Festival Miami also gave over 800 free tickets to Arvida Middle, Southwood Middle, South Miami K8, South Miami Middle, Greater Miami Youth Symphony, Community Arts Program, Mays Conservatory, Leewood K8 Center, Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida, City of Coral Gables residents and local area high schools. In addition,

Festival Miami participates in two highly regarded programs of the Miami-Dade County Cultural Exchange. Through Culture Shock Miami, $5 Festival Miami concert tickets are available to students between 13 and 22 years of age. With the Golden Ticket program, seniors may attend select Festival Miami concerts free of charge.

Festival Miami also donates tickets for silent auctions for charitable organizations, including History Preservation Association of Coral Gables, United Way, Junior League of Miami, Rocktoberfest. University of Miami School of Nursing, Arts and Business Council, Florida Festivals Events Association, and Women’s Fund Power of Purse Gala. The combination of a diverse concert lineup and educational opportunities scheduled throughout each season allows Festival Miami to engage community members across the age and economic spectrum. Nonprofit groups are invited to become part of Festival Miami’s outreach program. For more information, please email [email protected].
