Florida State University Schools Student Government Association Application Information: 2018-19 Sponsors: Ryan Capas ([email protected] ) & Deborah Whetstone {[email protected] ) The Florida State University Schools Student Government Association Executive Board includes our Student Body President, Vice President, Secretary, 8 class officers, and other selected members & meets daily during a 7 th period Leadership Skills class. As a member of this class, you will be responsible for planning and organizing school events, completing community service projects, & learning and applying various leadership skills. This is an active class that involves a time commitment. Part of your grade for the class will be based on attendance, planning, and participation in FSUS events outside of the classroom. You will also be responsible for making a portfolio of your leadership progress. SGA members are the representatives of the school; therefore, we are looking for outgoing , positive , hardworking , honest people who conduct themselves with integrity and work well with teachers & fellow students . If you are participating in class elections or looking to be a member of the Executive Board you will need to complete an interview. Please be mindful of the way you dress for your interview. Formal attire is recommended. (“Church clothes” is a safe rule of thumb.) Please note: Incomplete or late applications will NOT be accepted.

*** Dates to Remember ***

- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28th: SGA interviews in admin conference room in the front office. Bring your completed & signed application with you.

(Optional): Deadline to submit a video indicating why you would like to be in SGA and what makes you a highly qualified candidate. Email your submissions to [email protected]. (This is NOT required.)

- MONDAY, APRIL 9th through Friday April 13th: Campaigns for class officer candidates (Elections to be held Friday, April 13 th )

- Week of APRIL 16th: SGA Executive Board members and Class Officers will be announced on the Morning Announcements.

Application Checklist:

Below, you will find a list of items you will need to complete and submit during the interview time assigned to you. Remember, applications MUST be submitted on time to be considered for recommendation.

DUE BY: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28 th

Typed essay that answers the question: “Why do you want to serve in SGA?” Attach to this document upon submission

(no minimum or maximum length)

Student Information Sheet (completed and signed)

Parent and Student Contract (signed)

Two (2) Teacher Recommendations (templates provided). The teacher is to submit the letter directly to Mr. Capas or Ms. Whetstone or put it in their mailbox. Recommendations received directly from the student’s hands will not be accepted.

Minimal 3.0 Unweighted GPA (cumulative)

(Optional) If you so choose, record a 30 sec. speech and email it to [email protected] prior to your interview. Be sure that your video sets you apart from the rest of the candidates. (This is NOT required.)

Will you be running a campaign for class officer? ( Yes / No ) If you do not win election, would you still like to be in SGA? (Yes / No)

*Important note: If you choose to run for Class President or Class Vice President, campaigns will run from April 9 th through April 13 th , and voting will be held on Friday, April 13th. You must meet all SGA requirements and pass the interview process in order to be considered for the ballot. You may NOT starting campaigning prior to April 9 th .

*Also note: While campaigning, you ARE permitted to create & distribute traditional “campaign items” (posters, buttons, fliers, etc.), but you may NOT distribute anything that could be perceived as a “bribe” (candy, money, prizes, etc.).

Applicant’s Parent-Student Contract

I understand the following requirements to be in SGA and agree to adhere by them if selected to serve on the Executive Board:

Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA unweighted while in the class. Students must abide by the highest standards expected of Florida High

students – including but not limited to academics, behavior, dress code, etc. Students must arrange transportation to events after hours or off campus. If a

student is signed up to attend an event, an absence will result in a zero. Students will be graded on

o event attendanceo following through on stated responsibilities o and completion of written work in class.

Students must document the completion of one hundred (100) hours of community service between the end of the 2017-2018 school year and the last day of the 2018-2019 school year.

Students must serve as project manager at least once per year – leading the planning and implementation of their assigned event.

Students must complete and submit portfolio to document their growth and accomplishments as a leader.

Students must make arrangements to regularly attend a 7th period Leadership Skills class.

Students can be removed from the class if their GPA drops below 3.0 or if they receive a referral, suspension, or engage in other behavior deemed detrimental to the goals of SGA.
