discuss how FAM is working and to identify future

the state on Saturday May 11 at 12pm for lunch and

discussion about ways to engage and build your

membership Lunch will be provided for those Chap-

On Saturday evening at 6pm attendees can enjoy a refreshing cocktail poolside with hors

Investigating Floridarsquos Ancient Fisheries

ldquoArchaeology is a team sport While the 21st century

has brought many new and exciting techniques to the

field of archaeology perhaps the most significant

development may have to do with personnelrdquo

In her Keynote Address Ms Mahar will discuss ldquothe

role of students community members fisherfolk and

biologists in the investigation of Floridarsquos ancient

fisheries with a focus on the Woodland archaeology

of the Gulf Coast The benefits of Community

Archaeology and interdisciplinary research will be

discussed as well as the critical role that ldquoOur Teamrdquo

plays in the detection investigation and preservation

of Floridarsquos coastal heritagerdquo Ginessa and robot

President Emily Jane Murray ndash Emily Jane has a MA in Anthropology from Brandeis

University where she focused on public archaeology and site museums in Northeast Florida and a BA

in Communications from Flagler College She has worked in cultural resource management throughout

the Southeastern United States and created numerous outreach tools including videos activities and

museum displays She currently works as a Public Archaeology Coordinator for the Florida Public

Archaeology Network Northeast Region Her interests include Floridas prehistoric archaeology

historic cemeteries and public archaeology and interpretation She has served FAS as 1st VP and 2nd

VP each for two years

First Vice President Dr George Luer ndash George has been a member of the Flor ida

Anthropological Society for more than 45 years He is a former FAS President 1st VP 2nd VP and

recipient of the Lazarus and Bullen Awards He has served in editorial capacities for Florida

Anthropologist for 40 years and has assembled FAS issues and monographs With colleague Marion

Almy he defined the Manasota culture of west-central Florida He is known by colleagues for

generosity hard work and support of their efforts to publish their findings He was recently appointed

the 2019 Editor of Florida Anthropologist As a board member he will strengthen FAS with

experience professionalism and commitment to the mission of FAS

Second Vice President Rebecca OrsquoSullivan ndash Becky earned a BA in Anthropology from the

University of Florida and an MA in Applied Anthropology with a concentration in Cultural Resource

Management from the University of South Florida Becky is the Public Archaeology Coordinator for

the West Central Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network She is currently a board

member of the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society in St Petersburg Beckyrsquos research interests

include public archaeology heritage interpretation memory and place-making as well as related

applications for GIS and historic maps She has previously served as 2nd VP and as an at-large board

member

Recording Secretary Jon Simon Suarez ndash Jon Simon received both his BA and MA degrees

from the University of Florida where he focused on the zooarchaeology of the Thornhill Lake site

complex in Volusia County He has over fifteen years of cultural resource management experience and

is currently Logistics Officer for SEARCH Inc in Jacksonville He lives in St Augustine and is a

member SAAA Jon Simon is currently serving his eighth term as recording secretary for the FAS

board

Treasurer Joanne Talley ndash Joanne has served as the Treasurer of FAS for fifteen years She

retired as Administrative Assistant at the Jupiter Island Club in 2009 and currently works as a

volunteer for the Palm Beach County archaeologist She works diligently to raise awareness of and

protect archaeological resources in southeast Florida and has contributed to numerous excavations

including Mount Elizabeth and Joseph Reed in Martin County In 2018 she received the Lazarus

Award from for her tireless efforts

Director-at-Large (3 year term) Dr Maranda Kles ndash Maranda is a bioarchaeologist with a

research focus on biological and cultural variation in pre-contact Florida After earning her PhD from

the University of Florida in 2013 she was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of

Louisiana at Lafayette for four years Recently returning to Florida she is Vice President of

Archaeological Consultants Inc in Sarasota Maranda is a long standing member of FAS having

attended and presented papers and posters at several meetings and published in Florida

Anthropologist She looks forward to continuing to develop the influence and impact that FAS has in

Florida through public outreach presentations and publications and local chapter events

University where she focused on public archaeology and site museums in Northeast Florida and a BA

in Communications from Flagler College She has worked in cultural resource management throughout

the Southeastern United States and created numerous outreach tools including videos activities and

museum displays She currently works as a Public Archaeology Coordinator for the Florida Public

Archaeology Network Northeast Region Her interests include Floridas prehistoric archaeology

historic cemeteries and public archaeology and interpretation She has served FAS as 1st VP and 2nd

VP each for two years

First Vice President Dr George Luer ndash George has been a member of the Flor ida

Anthropological Society for more than 45 years He is a former FAS President 1st VP 2nd VP and

recipient of the Lazarus and Bullen Awards He has served in editorial capacities for Florida

Anthropologist for 40 years and has assembled FAS issues and monographs With colleague Marion

Almy he defined the Manasota culture of west-central Florida He is known by colleagues for

generosity hard work and support of their efforts to publish their findings He was recently appointed

the 2019 Editor of Florida Anthropologist As a board member he will strengthen FAS with

experience professionalism and commitment to the mission of FAS

Second Vice President Rebecca OrsquoSullivan ndash Becky earned a BA in Anthropology from the

University of Florida and an MA in Applied Anthropology with a concentration in Cultural Resource

Management from the University of South Florida Becky is the Public Archaeology Coordinator for

the West Central Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network She is currently a board

member of the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society in St Petersburg Beckyrsquos research interests

include public archaeology heritage interpretation memory and place-making as well as related

applications for GIS and historic maps She has previously served as 2nd VP and as an at-large board

member

Recording Secretary Jon Simon Suarez ndash Jon Simon received both his BA and MA degrees

from the University of Florida where he focused on the zooarchaeology of the Thornhill Lake site

complex in Volusia County He has over fifteen years of cultural resource management experience and

is currently Logistics Officer for SEARCH Inc in Jacksonville He lives in St Augustine and is a

member SAAA Jon Simon is currently serving his eighth term as recording secretary for the FAS

board

Treasurer Joanne Talley ndash Joanne has served as the Treasurer of FAS for fifteen years She

retired as Administrative Assistant at the Jupiter Island Club in 2009 and currently works as a

volunteer for the Palm Beach County archaeologist She works diligently to raise awareness of and

protect archaeological resources in southeast Florida and has contributed to numerous excavations

including Mount Elizabeth and Joseph Reed in Martin County In 2018 she received the Lazarus

Award from for her tireless efforts

Director-at-Large (3 year term) Dr Maranda Kles ndash Maranda is a bioarchaeologist with a

research focus on biological and cultural variation in pre-contact Florida After earning her PhD from

the University of Florida in 2013 she was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of

Louisiana at Lafayette for four years Recently returning to Florida she is Vice President of

Archaeological Consultants Inc in Sarasota Maranda is a long standing member of FAS having

attended and presented papers and posters at several meetings and published in Florida

Anthropologist She looks forward to continuing to develop the influence and impact that FAS has in

Florida through public outreach presentations and publications and local chapter events

FAS Banquet and Awards

On Saturday evening at 6pm attendees can enjoy a refreshing cocktail poolside with hors

drsquooeuvres overlooking gorgeous views of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge The

Magnolia Room doors will open at 645pm at the Conference Center for the FAS Banquet and

Awards Ceremony

A delicious buffet will start at 7pm where healthy servings of batter fried local fish and roasted

rosemary chicken will be served Three types of salads lots of veggies and desserts of baked ap-

Management from the University of South Florida Becky is the Public Archaeology Coordinator for

the West Central Regional Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network She is currently a board

member of the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society in St Petersburg Beckyrsquos research interests

include public archaeology heritage interpretation memory and place-making as well as related

applications for GIS and historic maps She has previously served as 2nd VP and as an at-large board

member

Recording Secretary Jon Simon Suarez ndash Jon Simon received both his BA and MA degrees

from the University of Florida where he focused on the zooarchaeology of the Thornhill Lake site

complex in Volusia County He has over fifteen years of cultural resource management experience and

is currently Logistics Officer for SEARCH Inc in Jacksonville He lives in St Augustine and is a

member SAAA Jon Simon is currently serving his eighth term as recording secretary for the FAS

board

Treasurer Joanne Talley ndash Joanne has served as the Treasurer of FAS for fifteen years She

retired as Administrative Assistant at the Jupiter Island Club in 2009 and currently works as a

volunteer for the Palm Beach County archaeologist She works diligently to raise awareness of and

protect archaeological resources in southeast Florida and has contributed to numerous excavations

including Mount Elizabeth and Joseph Reed in Martin County In 2018 she received the Lazarus

Award from for her tireless efforts

Director-at-Large (3 year term) Dr Maranda Kles ndash Maranda is a bioarchaeologist with a

research focus on biological and cultural variation in pre-contact Florida After earning her PhD from

the University of Florida in 2013 she was Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of

Louisiana at Lafayette for four years Recently returning to Florida she is Vice President of

Archaeological Consultants Inc in Sarasota Maranda is a long standing member of FAS having

attended and presented papers and posters at several meetings and published in Florida

Anthropologist She looks forward to continuing to develop the influence and impact that FAS has in

Florida through public outreach presentations and publications and local chapter events
