Umerkot Profile

District Umerkot is located in Sindh Province, the second largest province of Pakistan in terms of Population.

Total Population of the district Umerkot is approximately 01 Million.

The district is geographically divided into two parts;

1) The Irrigated north-west and

2) Arid/desert portion in the north, east and south.

It is administratively divided into four Talukas.

Talukas are further administratively subdivided into Union Council(UC).

District Umerkot is divided into 27 UC’s, each UC has average population of 26000-30000 and usually population of each UC is served by one government Primary level health care facility.

The catchment population of public health facility is served by outreach community based Lady Health Workers (LHW).

The literacy rate of the district is 31.5 % and female literacy is 24.6%.

45% Population is uncovered from Lady Health Workers (LHW).

During Monsoon season 2011 heavy rains started from 9th August 2011 and as a result low lying areas are inundated…..

Large number of people displaced from their homes and under the sky without shelters moved to safer and higher places…..

Taluka Pithoro and Taluka Samaro still getting water from Sanghar and Mirpurkhas that should create again worst situation of affected area.

HANDS Rescue Response • HANDS Rescue Team worked from 8th September

2011, and during early rescue operation about more than 800 families rescued from Taluka Samaro, Kunri, Pithoro and Umerkot.

HANDS SHELTER PROVISION• The HANDS team started the quick relief activities and

distributed the 200 Plastic Sheets among 200 Families/IDPs during rain present on the sand dunes without any shelter under the open sky.

HANDS SHELTER PROVISION In the initial days HANDS team is the first in Umerkot who installed

200 tents at Nahunta and Cheel Band 100 of each tent villages, where daily medical health facilities, water and food bags also provided.

is under water and IDPs are moved either out of Taluka or at the higher places on the roads, so installing tents at there not possible…

HANDS Health and Nutrition Services • HANDS Mobile Medical teams are working from initial days.

• Initially in August 2011, team worked in affected areas of District Umerkot and Mirpurkhas

• As September session of monsoon hit the Umerkot, Emergency Medical Relief services also started at Umerkot

HANDS Health and Nutrition Services • 43 Medical camps were organized for rain affected.

• 4250 patients treated.

• 350 pregnant ladies got Antenatal Checkups.

• 1916 children got deworming medicines.

• 2000 ORS sachet distributed among affected families having under 5 children.

• 200 Safe Delivery Kits distributed in full term pregnant ladies.

• Nutrition assessment of children done in camps and 97 children got one month dose of plumpy nuts and high energy biscuits.

• Medical team also gave 26 health awareness sessions to the 148 families on WASH and Health awareness especially during flood session techniques in which 754 participants were there.

•Referral system strengthened by mobilizing the communities to refer more and more deliveries to be done at health facilities with incentives to communities as well as health care provider…
