Flint River Canoe Trip 2017

Lawhorn Scouting Base, Molena, Georgia

May 5-7, 2017

Come join us for a guided 12-mile canoe trip on the Flint River. We’ll spend two nights camping and an

afternoon canoeing, having fun, and earning requirements for Canoeing, Camping and Cooking MB!

Depart: Friday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. We will meet Friday in Class A Uniforms no later than 4:30 p.m. in

the church lot in front of the CAC. Be sure to eat dinner before drop off at the church. We will head out

as soon as possible, as traffic south on 285 and 85 will be heavy. The Lawhorn web site is at http://ini-

to324.org/WTGCG/lawhorn.htm

Return: Sunday, May 7, around 1:00 p.m. We will send out an email when we are leaving camp.

Return will be where we departed.

Special Requirements to Participate: Canoeing sometimes involves swimming – voluntarily or not.

Scouts must have their Swimming Merit Badge, and must have passed the BSA swim test within the

last year. For most Scouts who went to summer camp last year, they will be current. If you have

Swimming Merit Badge, but haven’t taken the swim test since May 5, 2016, contact Mr. Jordan

([email protected]). Also, everyone will need their BSA Medical Forms Parts, A, B and C (C being the

doctor visit form) up to date.

(below) Scenes from Canoe Camp, April 2016:

Cost: $77 per participant. A $20 deposit is due by February 13. The full cost needs to be paid no later

than April 10, as we have to make final payments for the campsite shortly thereafter.

Gear: No tents needed. We will have platform (summer camp-style) tents on site. You will need to bring

the following: sleeping pad, sleeping bag, pillow, camp chair, water bottle, first aid kit,

flashlight/headlamp, two towels, drinking cup, knife, mess kit, hat or cap, sunblock, non-aerosol bug

repellant, plastic or “wet” bag, personal grooming items, swimsuit, two changes of clothes (including

socks!), and appropriate shoes for canoeing (this means old tennis shoes, river shoes or closed-toed river

sandals with ankle straps; no flip-flops or other open-toed shoes are permitted). River sun can get hot!

Optional: Fishing gear (bring a license if you are 16 years old or older). The camp has a small pond.

(Remember, however, fishing does not exempt a Scout from duty roster jobs!)

What Not to Bring: Electronics (cellphones, iPads, etc.) will be left in the car.

Canoeing Merit Badge Requirements: We will hold two sessions during the Scout meetings on March

27 and April 17 to go over most of the merit badge “classroom” requirements. We probably won’t get all

of the “practical” requirements completed during the trip, but we will get a lot of them done. The

Canoeing Merit Badge worksheet, which we will follow, can be found at

http://meritbadge.org/wiki/images/0/09/Canoeing.pdf.

Meals: Friday – Eat before you leave for the church! Saturday breakfast will be in camp by patrol.

Saturday lunch will be sandwiches, etc. on the water. Saturday dinner, campfire and cracker barrel and

Sunday breakfast will be in camp.

Adults and Transport: At this stage, we need a minimum of 3 adult drivers for the expected number of

Scouts. We might need more. Please let Jon know if you can drive, and how many Scouts you can

take. Adults must have current YPT certificates and driver information on file.

Questions: Contact ASM Jon Jordan with questions (770-633-7142 or [email protected])

(permission slip on next page)

(above, l-r) Plan B – pulling out a swamped canoe and getting back on the river; Land Ho! –

and no zombies encountered! (Part of our trip runs through places where the TV show “The

Walking Dead” is filmed – one zombie scene was filmed on a riverbank near our pull-out beach)
