Degree structureOur degrees are designed to be straightforward and flexible. We cover a wide range of subjects and work to ensure you can balance the depth and breadth you want in a programme of study.

One compulsory moduleIntroduction to Science and Technology Studies

Many optionsFour option modules from the module catalogue for your degree (STS or HPS).

Three electivesOne additional module must be from our department catalogue (either STS and HPS), plus two additional modules from any department in UCL (including us).

Research projectOne research project of your own design, completing a 10,000 word dissertation or project report.

Interdisciplinary rangeOur interdisciplinary range caters to many interests, and our degrees are flexible. We allow substitutions between our catalogues to create a coherent programme of study in line with your interests.

Time managementOur modules are designed for efficient use of your time. Each is structured around 20 classroom hours (normally two hours per week over a 10-week teaching term).

Assessment varies between modules. Some ask for one long essay. Others ask for combinations of shorter writing or reports, or they involve projects such as films or proposals.

A full-time student’s week typically involves 4x2-hour seminars, research and writing time, plus participation in the busy social and intellectual life of London’s largest department in the field.
