Unbonded Flexible Pipe
The NKT flexible pipe is an un-bonded structure consisting of helically wound metallic armour wires or
strips combined with concentric layers of polymers, textiles, fabric tapes and lubricants.
Each layer has a purpose:
Hydrostatic pressure: Carcass
Fluid barrier: Extruded polymer Liner
Inner pressure: Pressure Armour
Tensile forces: Tensile Armour
Corrosion: Extruded outer sheath

FAMILY 1
EXAMPLEFAMILY 3 EXAMPLE
GAS, OIL, WATER, CHEMICALS, SHALLOW/DEEP WATER ETC.
The main design is divided into three families:
Family 1 ”Smooth Bore” – smooth bore (liner), pressure + tensile armour, outer sheath
Family 2 ”Rough Bore” – carcass, liner, special tensile armour, outer sheath
Family 3 ”Rough Bore Reinforced” – carcass, liner, pressure + tensile armour, outer sheath
Each family may include special purpose layers such as anti wear and insulation layers.
End Fitting - From Flexible Pipe to Connector
Valve, Rigid Pipe, Flexible Pipe etc.
The end fitting is a mechanical device which forms the transition between the flexible pipe body and the
connector. The different pipe layers are terminated in the end fitting in such a way as to transfer the load
between the flexible pipe and the connector.
Common Flange Interfaces
API Standard
Most used and known flange system in NKTF end fittings. There are different types of flanges like 6A and 17D
SPO/NORSOK (Vector)
SPO are compact flanges (CFS). Tensioning of stud bolts deforms the flanges, which makes a good sealing. SPO’s have less diameter than other standard flanges with comparable loads
ASME / ANSI (shown as swivel type with rotating bolting interface)
A bit bigger than the API’s, but same dimension of gasket. Lower material grade can be used
SWIVEL RINGGrayloc
Grayloc is a clamp system that only requires 4 bolts. For easy installing
GRAYLOC CLAMP
Carcass Line
The carcass prevents collapse of the inner liner,
provides crushing resistance and mechanical
protection against pigging tools and abrasive
particles
An interlocking structure manufactured from a
metallic strip
Polymer inner liner and outer sheath
Outer Sheath is provided as a yellow UV-
stabilized Polyamide for dynamic applications or
Medium Density Polyethylene for static
applications.
Inner liner extrusion of unplasticized PVdF using
NKT Flexibles’ proprietary extrusion technology.
Armouring Lines
•Armoring with C-shaped profiles or steel strips for
hoop reinforcement
•The pressure armour layers provide resistance to
radial loads
•Armouring with flat steel wires for longitudinal
reinforcement
•The tensile armour layers provide resistance to
axial tension loads

Flexible Pipe Families
Our present pipe size range is from 2.5 inches to
16 inches inner diameter. Design pressures are
from 15,000 psi for the smallest pipe bores to
4,000 psi for the largest.
Polymer Materials
XLPE (PEX)
The XLPE grade is the newest polymer
material that NKT can offer, and the
introduction of this material to the
market has been driven by the obvious
need for a qualified and more cost
efficient solution suitable for a wider
temperature range, bridging the low
temperature features of an HDPE liner
with the higher temperature capabilities
of a PVDF liner. NKT’s XLPE is
extremely tough and resistant, thus
making it an obvious alternative for PA-
11 and PVDF within its approved
design limits.
PVDF
NKT’s flexible pipe solution for high
temperature applications is to use an
unplasticized PVdF grade. The PVdF
grade is a co-polymer where the
individual PVdF molecules are
chemically bound to the molecules of
the plasticizing component.Typical maximum temperatures of polymer materials.

Qualifications of Design
* Boundaries may be expanded on a project basis following design review.
Design pressures are from 15,000 psi for the smallest pipe bores to 5,000 psi for the largest. NKT Flexibles is the industry leader in design and manufacture of flexible pipes for
high temperature applications with design temperatures as high as 130°C for both static and dynamic service.

The ONGC operated Mumbai High off Western Offshore consists of Mumbai High,
Neelam and Heera, Bassein and Vasai assets, situated 160km offshore Mumbai. It is
the largest oil field in India with 98 platforms and more than 1000 wells.
NKT Flexibles has previously supplied HHI with pipes for installation in Indonesia
and Korea. The MHB project represents the first cooperation between HHI and NKT
Flexibles in India.
The project comprises 8”ID Water Injection and Gas Injection flowlines
Project - Pipeline Replacement Project, India
PRP – Pipeline Replacement project for ONGC / L&T
This order covers the supply of flexible Water Injection flowlines in
relation to ONGC’s Redevelopment of Mumbai High North, South and
Heera fields.
The supply and installation period is stretched over 3 years:
• 13 pipe segments totaling 25.5 km to be installed in 1Q 2005
• 7 pipe segments totaling 18.8 km to be installed in 2006/07
• 7 pipe segments totaling 16.5 km to be installed in 2007/08
Since 1999 NKT has supplied more than 100 km of flexible flowlines to
ONGC for water injection, gas and sour oil production.

deepwater oilfield development. Onsite are deepwater production facilities such as the
“FPSO Kikeh”, the “Kikeh Spar”, a mid-water FTL GAP system and subsea production
systems.

Summary
Thermal barrier layer build-up
The 3mm thick thermal barrier layer for the flowline structure consists of four layers of PP tape which will be wound around
the carcass in one process run. The layer build-up is shown schematically in Figure 2 including typical dimensions. The
winding process is controlled accurately thus ensuring a constant pitch along the pipe length. Furthermore, the
individual tape layers will be positioned in a way so that the gaps between adjacent tapes in a layer do not coincide with
gaps in the neighboring layer(s). Thereby, the thermal insulating property of the barrier layer will be uniform and any hot
spots are prevented.
A polyester tape (fabrication aid) will be wound around the thermal barrier layer to protect and secure the PP tapes before
extrusion of the inner liner.
