Grand Parade, Cork was the landmark location for the first real-time passenger information service to

go into operation as part of planned pilot of new electronic bus information signs for the Southern Capital.

The service has been developed by the National Transport Authority and Dublin City Council who are managing the system for Local Authorities. In Cork, 14 of 27 new signs are now being live tested on an introductory basis. Cork City Council will place the signs at some of the busiest bus stops across the city and suburbs during 2012.

Th is launch of real time passenger information services in Cork forms part of a national rollout of electronic bus information signs

which started last year with services in Dublin and will also be extended to Limerick, Waterford and Galway by year-end.

SMS texting, Web and mobile App services are also being developed to provide bus arrival time information for all stops, each of which will have an individual identifi cation number. Bus Éireann is currently in the process of physically numbering all stops in Cork. Th ese services will be launched in the summer.

Th e new real-time information service in Cork is being delivered in co-operation with Bus Éireann, which is responsible for the automatic vehicle location system and the associated real time arrival predictions for its buses. Th e scheme can also take information from other licensed transport operators.

Over the year 2011, a total of 1,935,392 new commercial vehicles were registered in Europe. Th is fi gure

represents a 9.9% increase over the previous year but still one-fi ft h below pre-crisis levels whcn annual volumes averaged 2.5 million units. Th e Bus and Coach industry proved to be the weakest among the commercial vehicle community with production and new sales continuing a downward trend.

Over the 12 months past, cumulative results showed a 0.7% slip as markets performed diversely. While the French and Spanish markets expanded by +15.2% and 10.3% respectively, Germany contracted by 3.4% and the U.K. by 16.4%.

According to the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry), the total number of new registrations for buses and coaches in Ireland

was just 111 units (includes 51 private imports) up from 77 units from 2010 but down from the 170 unit fi gure recorded in 2009.

Weak markets in North America too, growth in South AmericaIn North America, the total bus market remained weak. Th e city bus market declined 17% in 2011, when cities’ investments in new buses were very restricted. Th e coach market in North America increased 25% from an exceptionally low volume in 2010.

In South America, demand remained strong with approximately 30% higher volumes in heavy buses, comapred with 2010. In Mexico, the total bus market increased from very low levels in 2010. Th e market for heavy buses in China grew 13% in 2011, compared with the year-earlier period.

Following the launch of BlueEffi ciency Euro 5 engines for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, mini-bus and mini-

bus operators will be pleased to hear that the popular light commercial will now be specifi ed with a new 7 gear automatic transmission.

Mated to the new OM651 engine, the 7G-Tronic not only offers additional comfort for the driver and passenger, fuel consumption has been reduced by up to

1.8 litres per 100 kilometres, compared to the G40 (5 speed) available previously on the Sprinter range. In addition the fully integrated, electro-hydraulic control system, up to 49g/km less CO2 has been achieved.

Th e fi ft h forward gear of the new automatic is designed as a direct gear, the sixth and seventh gear has a longer ratio, enabling the reduction of fuel consumption.

Colm Murphy (pictured centre left ) with Enda Kiernan, Paddy and Noel Matt hews from Matt hews Tours informed Fleet Bus & Coach that its coach tour business is in expansion mode att racting visitors from the United States and Northern Europe. Matt hews Coaches will be on duty for the London Olympics.

Ulsterbus’ Brian Hurrell is confident of a busy season ahead with the Titanic Centenary and additional tours to the Giants Causeway as the company’s new striking livery demonstrates.

BUS LANE

4 FLEETBUS&COACH | Spring 2012

Now that Transport for London allows motorcycles to use Bus Lanes on a permanent basis,

a signifi cant increase in collision rates with buses and coaches is predicted by independent road safety body – IAM (Institute of Advanced Motorists). This decision which sees London joining cities such as Birmingham and Bristol who already allow it, is aimed at easing congestion and reducing CO2 emissions in the city.

From studies undertaken from the trial period, the increase in motorcycle collision rates and severity has been significant to date, together with a dramatic increase in pedal cycle

accidents. Concerns have been expressed that pedal cyclists are reacting to the presence of motorcycles in Bus Lanes by travelling nearer to the kerb than before, making them less visible to vehicles turning across their path.

“This decision doesn’t just affect Londoners,” stressed Simon Best, IAM Chief Executive. “With thousands more people visiting London for the Olymics this summer, everybody needs to be aware of the risks. Bus drivers and cyclists need to be vigilant and get used to sharing the space with motorcycles, but there is a lot motorcyclists and cyclists can do to protect themselves.”

Denis Rudd was awarded the title ‘Coach Driver of the Year 2011’ at Dublin Mini Coaches. “Th e

Annual Award celebrated by Dublin Mini Coaches since 1998 is presented to the driver with the most positive feedback and compliments from the customers. Denis Rudd has made the transition from the construction industry to the travel trade while adapting very quickly to his position as Coach Driver. He provides expertise, warmth and

friendliness to all our customers. We like to incentivise good work ethic, and to encourage and acknowledge the staff who are the foundations of our business,” explained Lisa Reburn, Marketing Department, Dublin Mini Coaches.

Denis is pictured receiving the Tommy Dorgan Memorial Cup from Melissa Pau, General Manager of Dublin Mini Coaches.

A t the end of the fourth quarter of 2011, Volvo Bus deliveries worldwide totalled 4,172 units, up 29% compared

with the 3,230 buses/coaches sold in 2010. South America accounted for the largest increase as Volvo Bus signed its largest order ever in Columba, with 688 buses for Bogota. In addition, a new bus range consisting of a city bus and two coaches was launched in India. Going into 2012, Volvo Bus order intake was up 7%.

Interest in Neoplan products is at an all-time high following the German coach brand’s appearance at the Coach & Bus

Live Exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham last October. MAN Bus & Coach General Manager, John Hill (pictured)said, “Our display at the Coach & Bus Live event in October was a clear indication of how, increasingly, the brand has been catching operators’ att ention. Th e arrival of a 13.2m, three-axle P20 for the Tourliner range had been driven by operator comment and demand, and we were able to deliver in time for the Show. We were duly rewarded with fi rm orders for some 11 vehicles, as well as with lots of serious enquiries from operators who would be fi rst-time users of the brand, if and when their interest turns into orders. “Similarly with the Starliner on display. Th e high specifi cations available with this model are making this a real fl eet leader for operators, with company’s like Ellisons using them in increasing numbers as team coaches on some

very high-profi le football club work.” Well-known over many years for its high levels of stylish design and fittings, the involvement of MAN has added new levels of engineering sophistication and reliability to the NEOPLAN marque. Th e all-MAN drivelines with their EGR engines have, apart from their excellent fuel-effi ciency, also given operators a welcome release from the cost and complexity of AdBlue.

COVER

D espite bitt erly cold temperatures on the day, one model from the new Van Hool TX range of touring class coaches managed

to bring out a crowd when Dermot Cronin Motors demonstrated the coach at the North City Hotel, in Gormanstown, County Meath. Th is was the fi rst of a two day customer experience, with the coach then moving to the Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork.

Brilliant winter sunshine lit up the red livery, highlighting the smooth aesthetic lines of the bodywork. Van Hool’s Sales Manager, Erik Olijslagers had brought the TX Astronef 16 over from Belgium to give operators a chance to examine the many improvements and features that made the new Van Hool, winner of the ‘Grand Award Coach 2011’ at the recent Busworld Expo in Kortrijk (Belgium).

Th e TX Astrotnef range is available in three lengths from the TX 15 at 12.30m to the TX 17 at 14.04m. However the tri-axle demonstrator on show was the TX 16 with a length of 13.2 metre - all Astrotnef models have a standard height of 3.73m. Astrotnef boasts a luggage capacity of 13.50 m3. Th e compartments are functional and easy to work with and can include remote

central locking of either side individually, from a multifunction key fob.

Powered by a DAF MX 340 – 340 kW (460 hp) the coach is remarkably quiet, even when standing at the engine bay with the door open. Th e unit operates with an unerring smoothness, all of which improves the experience for the passenger. Quiet operation is further enhanced by the well-matched ZF 12 speed AS Tronic transmission.

With many large touring coaches now exceeding the four-hundred horsepower barrier, some are raising the question about reducing the number of ratios in vehicle transmissions, from the almost standard 12 down to possibly 8 or 9 speed options, believing that this could be more suited to Irish conditions where the vehicle is operating on dual carriageway or Motorway for the majority of its working day.

Internally the theatre style fl oor in the display version has seating for 55+1+1. Overhead, the sturdy and secure lockers provided ample storage space for the passenger’s small belongings. However one feature in particular that caught

everyone’s eye once inside was the full-length transparent centre aisle roof, which fl ooded the Astronef ’s interior with natural light.

Available with a catalogue of options and trims, Van Hool’s att ention to detail is exemplary, particularly in the driver’s cockpit area. Driving position is excellent and ample space is provided to allow a wide range of seat adjustments catering to all sizes of driver. All round vision is fi rst-class with visibility around the entrance door improved by the glass line being lowered. Well-placed and easily adjusted rear-view mirrors should cater to all drivers seating positions.

The newly revised dash layout and dash mounted gear selector provides the driver with a workspace which is both welcoming and functional. All controls are thoughtfully positioned and complimented by well-designed sturdy switchgear. On board information and personal sett ings are displayed on a colour screen located in the centre of the speedo head.

Van Hool has also catered excellently for the guide, with many improvements or additions, which include integrated table with lighting, private storage area and 50 litre fridge. USB connection, 24V socket and an optional 220-volt socket are also provided.

Niall Cronin, Dermot Cronin Motors was pleased with the level of interest in Astronef and believes that while things in the passenger transport business have been tough, “there are many positive signs for 2012.”

It is certainly uplift ing to see that manufacturers are continuing to develop their products both internally and externally to an exceptionally high standard.

Eu ro 2 012 suppor ters travelling over to Poland are likely to be transported

internally by domestic bus/coach manufacturer Solaris. Posnan City Transport has ordered 26 Solaris Alpino 8.6 metre low-foor midibuses to form part of its fl eet renewal programme.

It off ers room for 50 passengers, 13 of which will be seated. Powered by

a 6.7 litre 242 PS Cummins diesel, it meets the demanding EEV emsisions standard.

As Posnan is one of the host cities of the 2012 European Football Championships, Posnan City Transport has taken delivery of 100 Solaris city buses over the last two years, many of which have football and other symbols woven into their seats.

Jamaica’s capital Kingston is to benefi t from the Government’s massive public transport improvement programme to create bett er living conditions for the city’s population. Volvo Bus and

By mid-August 2012, the leading Nordic

in Finland. The award winning LLE Citeas for Norbina has

a length of 12 metres, is equipped with a Euro 5

engine featuring EEV technology, and has 39+41 seats and room for around 40 standees. All the buses will be used

for public transport in Helsinki.

The Nobina Group, with locations in Sweden, Finland,

Norway and Denmark, operates a fl eet of some 3,500 buses and has also invested in 121 biofuel buses supplied by Scania for service in Uppland and Skane in Sweden. Of the 121 buses, 109 will be run on biogas and the rest on biodiesel.

Scania can supply buses that run on renewable fuels: biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas, as well as on natural gas.

Today, there are only a few biofuels that are commercially available for running vehicles. Bioethanol is by far the most common and is obtainable all over the world. Biodiesel is suitable for any type of operation, including transport of passengers. Biogas holds tremendous potential, for instance if produced from sewage and waste dumps, and is gradually gaining ground.

Th e choice of biofuel is determined by local conditions, taxes, subsidies etc. All biofuels deliver a considerable reduction in carbon dioxide emissions if they are produced in a sustainable way.

Glasgow’s North West region will benefi t from 15 new Alexander Denis Enviro200s buses to be put into service

by Citybus. Th is seven new Enviro200s are all 10.8 metre models, powered by Cummins ISBe four-cylinder 160PS EEV engine, coupled with Allison S2100 five-speed automatic transmissions.

Each of the E200s has 39 seats, bonded glass, contoured bumpers, continuous cove saloon lighting, Mobitec LED destination equipment.

Th e order follows a previous delivery of fi ve Enviro200s in May 2010.

Optare has signed a contract worth £18 million to supply 190 of its Solo SR Midibus

to the City of Cape Town, South Africa. Th e new fl eet of buses will form a key element of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) net work being introduced by the City Council as part of a world-class Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system combining all modes of public transport.

Central to Optare’s success was the support provided by Ashok Leyland and the partnership forged with South Africa’s leading bus assembler Busmark 2000, who will produce the buses at a new plant in Cape Town from kits of components and sub assemblies supplied by Optare.

Under the contract Optare is supplying the 8.9 metre version of its Solo SR model powered by the Cummins ISBe six-cylinder engine. This meets Euro 5 emissions standards in line with the environmental requirements of Cape

Eu r o B u s Expo 2012 is expected

to att ract more than 250 exhibitors to the NEC, Birmingham from 6-8 November next. A ll of the leading passenger transport vehicle manufacturers have committ ed to be at the Show, which is the key event in the European calendar focusing on environmental and tech nolog y developments w i t h i n t h e industry.

Show Director, Mark Griffi n, says that there are very few opportunities remaining to exhibit vehicles. “We’ve received tremendous support from across the industry,” he says. “It’s clear that Euro Bus Expo is seen as a key event for this year. Th e demand for stand space has been unprecedented at this point in recent years and is clear evidence of the importance of the show to manufacturers and suppliers.”

Recognising the drive towards cleaner, safer and more effi cient methods for passenger transport, organisers have announced a dedicated Environmental Zone, designed to showcase products and services striving to meet new standards of excellence in the sector.

Now an established and much valued part of Euro Bus Expo, ‘Technology Zone’ returns.

Th e opportunity to demonstrate new developments in smart ticketing, real time accessibility a n d p a s s e n g e r management solutions ensures that industry leading companies continue to support this key area w ithin the exhibition. Featuring the ‘Live’ Master Class Theatre, a series of interactive presentations will ensure that delegates have the opportunity to get involved fi rst hand with the ever

the CTT C, the Coach Tourism & Transport Council. Scheduled to take place once again at the RDS Simmonscourt Pavilion, Dublin, it is Ireland’s leading showcase for the passenger transport industry.

One of the innovations from the last event held in 2010 was the introduction of the Tourism

Village and Show Organiser, Gerry Mullins is keen to expand on this successful aspect of the event. “Because the Tourism Village was organised by the CTT C, and all of Ireland’s main coach companies are members of the CTT C, it was a unique opportunity for tourist att ractions to meet with the people who own the coaches and decide where they go they go,” he said.

F ew will deny that comfort levels in the panel van sector have improved substantially since the turn of the century and hence, minibus design

and comfort levels have risen in tandem. Renault’s Trafi c and its sister models, the Opel Vivaro and the Nissan Primastar have been to the fore in driving this forward since they arrived in the nineties. Indeed you could claim that this trio were the leaders in delivering the commercial segment to new levels of luxury not associated with van and minibuses in the old days.

Driver welfare is one of the key measures behind this welcome transformation and now most brands take user friendliness seriously. Th e latest long-wheel-base (LWB) Trafi c 9-seater bus is both good for the driver and for the passengers too.

Th ere’s not a lot you can do with the layout other than provide as much room as possible for your customers and luggage, while making travelling simple and cosy. In this carriage there is a twin seat up front – a tight squeeze for two adults - protected by a front passenger airbag as standard and two three-seat rows in the rear. Access to the passenger area at the back comes via two side sliding doors and a huge, glazed tailgate at the rear for access to the luggage compartment. Th at tailgate comes with a heated rear window and a big wiper

att ached – important features for optimum visibility. Th ose additional inches behind row three are a big bonus in this long-wheel base model. Th ere is no real answer to the tight access to the third row either but this is much the same in most vehicles of this type.

On the road this latest version is bett er in terms of ride and refi nement. Th is is one of the more aerodynamic minibuses on the market and the handling is safe and predictable while the steering is precise and eliminates most of the understeer that can be a problem in some

vans. Being a long-wheel base model there is additional stability that comes from the extra length.

Apart from that the driver is well served with a decent seating position, complete with an armrest and height adjustment. Visibility is excellent throughout, with a big sloping windscreen aided by the distinctive domed roof, large side windows and proper heated colour-coded door mirrors. Standard equipment includes: manual front air-conditioning, steering wheel audio controls, pollen fi lter,

radio/MP3 player with separate display and RCA outlet plus Bluetooth telephone connection, Elba grey upholstery and front fog lights.

Renault has held on to some of the favourite characteristics of the original Trafi c. Most of these are also driver oriented features such as the handy position of the gear lever, the layout of the dash and the inclusion of a Tom Tom Sat Nav system. It comes with a separate remote control, a questionable feature given that it is diffi cult, if not downright dangerous to use while on the move. However, it is an excellent system with easy-to-use instructions and a large, clear colourful screen for ease of reference and navigation.

Renault off ers just one engine in both the SWB and LWB models. Th ere’s not a lot

to complain about the power of the Euro 5 compliant 2.0-litre dCi 115hp powertrain. CO2 emissions are 218-222g/km and fuel consumption recorded on a week-long test drive was 9.8L/100km mostly undertaken with no passengers on board. Renault claims that there is 26 per cent more pulling power than the previous model, with torque levels up to 240Nm. On the road the additional power is noticeable and this makes driving the Trafi c a real treat compared to the old one. A six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard which is smooth and accurate, and as previously mentioned the positioning of the dash mounted gear lever is close to the left hand and the delightful short throw adds to the driving pleasure.

Entry is provided through a three-butt on remote key and central deadlocking. To meet

modern passenger travel requirements, seatbelts are provided for all nine travellers. ABS, EPS and electronic brake distribution is also part of the standard safety package.

While up front that cabin is very car-like, the rear passengers are treated to good solid seating too with ample knee and elbow room. Passengers can access and alight safely even in the hours of darkness as the rear compartment is well illuminated when the big interior lights are switched on and while there is no air conditioning in the rear section, the side windows open and the high roof line helps removes any hint of stuffi ness.

Externally, this minibus looks very stylish. Since its inception this design has been a fi rm favourite with van and minibus owners. In this case that overall look is even more stylish, with rear smoked windows with black frames that give it a luxurious feel and with the high-domed roof line and stylish front grille, larger headlights and colour-coded bumpers all adding to the stylish overall image.

Renault offers two versions of the Trafic minibus. Th e SWB version costs €35,090 and is in Tax Band E (€630pa). Th e LWB version comes in at €37,090 and is in Tax Band F (€1,005pa).

T he dynamic new Ford Tourneo Custom Concept will make its global debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in March, bringing a

new level of energy and style to the European personal use vehicle segment. Previewing the introduction of a completely new range of people movers, with commercial vehicles to follow, the Tourneo Custom Concept showcases a dramatic new look that will appeal to customers seeking style, functionality and space.

“One look at the Tourneo Custom Concept is enough to tell you that it will inject an exciting new spirit into the personal use segment,” said Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe. “Our forthcoming new range gives us the opportunity to appeal to new customers with a fresh new direction, and we have seized that opportunity with both hands.

Th e Tourneo Custom Concept will preview of a host of exciting new features, which give the vehicle strong car-like appeal. Th ese include an all-new interior design with driver-focused cockpit, and a luxurious, fully trimmed cabin which has the ambience and high-quality materials of a modern multi-seat saloon car.

Dramatic new design languageTh e Tourneo Custom Concept communicates very clearly a dramatic new design direction for Ford’s commercial vehicle range, which will be introduced later in 2012. With its advanced, streamlined appearance, the concept vehicle embodies the same dynamic character as Ford’s Kinetic Design passenger cars – generating the strong sense of movement, even when the vehicle is standing still.

Signature Kinetic Design features helps give the Tourneo Custom Concept its unique character, including the bold trapezoidal grille, strong and muscular shoulder line, prominent wheel lips and window lines with the distinctive kick at the rear. Th e concept is further enhanced by a number of stylish details from the chrome grille surround and striking LED lighting on

the front-end, to the dynamic looks of the 18-inch alloy wheels.

Smart New FeaturesThe Tourneo Custom Concept highlights that customers in the personal use market can expect the same high levels of technology which are enjoyed by Ford car drivers. Among the smart, innovative features included on the concept are:

ECOnetic Technologies• – Ford’s advanced low-CO2 features including Auto-Start-Stop and Smart Regenerative ChargingS Y NC voice-activated, in-car • connectivity system – enables mobile phones and music players to be connected to the vehicle, and controlled using voice controlEmergency Assistance • – enabled by SYNC, this new feature is designed to assist occupants to contact the Emergency Services in the event of an accident, providing vehicle location informationAdvanced restraint system• – including driver, passenger, side and curtain airbagsRear-view camera• – integrated into the rear view mirror • Lane Departure Warning and Driver Alert – latest driver assistance features to alert the driver if the system detects the vehicle is inadvertently drift ing out of the lane, or the driver is becoming tired behind the wheel

To ensure that this enhanced specifi cation is complemented b y o u t s t a nd i n g per formance and fuel economy, the concept is powered by a further improved 155 PS version of Ford’s 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine family.

New Generation of Ford Commercial VehiclesTh e debut of the Tourneo Custom Concept has added signifi cance in heralding the arrival of a completely new generation of Ford commercial vehicles. Th e full range of models will be revealed during 2012.Kicking off this major series of introductions, the Tourneo Custom Concept itself highlights a new family of Ford people movers and one-tonne vans which will be launched in Europe and other global markets, but will not be sold in North America.

Th is new range will be powered by enhanced versions of the new 2.2-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine, which was initially introduced in 2011; with Auto-Stop-Start technology fi tt ed as standard, Ford is targeting best-in-class fuel economy. Th ree power ratings will be available: 100 PS, 125 PS and 155 PS. All versions are paired with a six-speed manual transmission and feature front-wheel drive. Th e model range will include a wide choice of body styles and two wheelbases (SWB and LWB) allowing for extra luggage or goods capability where required. “2012 is a tremendously signifi cant year for Ford as we begin the roll-out of a completely new range of commercial vehicles,” said Odell. “Our market-leading commercials have established a tremendous reputation for value and durability, and our new range is destined to raise this to a new level.”

Th r o u g h i t s 3 5% shareholding in ABC, its American distributor,

Van Hool is to establish a production plant in the United States to produce a range of ‘low-cost’ buses and coaches. Th is development will see Van Hool supply orders for up to 510 units, 210 of which will have to be produced in its native Belgium until such time as the US plant is up and running. According to company spokesman Yves Goffi n, “the low-cost market segment is becoming increasingly successful due to local production and imports from China and Mexico, among others,” he said. “Manufacture of this type

of vehicle in Belgium is impossible due to the much higher labour costs.”

Following this announcement Filip Van Hool, Van Hool’s Executive Director, added: “Th anks to the eff orts of our experienced and

fl exible employees and the fact that we custom-build vehicles to suit our customers’ needs, we have acquired a unique position on the world market. Our products are recognized as being highly innovative. We sell vehicles that have more to off er than others and, as a result, are very labour-intensive. In America the “low-cost” vehicle segment is growing very quickly. Our very healthy ambition is to

play a signifi cant role in this and thus retain and even expand our position on the global American market. Without this important foreign investment Van Hool’s position on the American market was under threat.”

T wo big Dutch companies have joined forces to form a four year collaboration

that sees both VDL Bus & Coach BV and Rabo Nielerphoegen BV benefit from the supply deal. As part of the agreement, two VDL Jonckheere luxury coaches have been delivered to the Robobank Cycling Team. Both 13.4 metre coaches are fully customised to meet the specifi c requirements of Rabo ProTeam. Apart from transporting the ProTeam’s

27 professional cyclists and support staff , the vehicles feature a relaxation room with luxurious armchairs and audiovisual equipment, fi tt ed kitchen along with showers and changing room. A powerful generator provides air-conditioning and power when the coach is not running. Th e extra large luggage area accommodates a washing machine and this section also provides space for up to eight bicycles below.

Allison Transmission has reached a major m i lestone i n t he

manufacture of bus and coach hybrids by producing its 5,000th H 40/50 EP system. Designed for both commuter buses and inter-city coaches, fl eet operators and passengers across North America and Europe are enjoying the benefi ts of these technologically-advanced systems produced in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

Reduced fuel consumption and lower vehicle exhaust gas emissions allow operators to save money and help protect the environment. Savings are also achieved by increased service brake life and reduced loads on the vehicle’s engine. Passengers enjoy the benefi t of a smoother, quieter ride as batt ery energy is blended with engine output during propulsion.

Allison Transmission estimates that by October 2011, Allison-equipped hybrid buses had saved 20.7 million gallons of diesel fuel and avoided approximately 204,900 metric tons of CO2 from being emitt ed into the atmosphere.

PROFILE

Operating from the old Catholic Church in Kenagh, County Longford, close to Ballymahon

town, Central Bus & Coach (CBC) continues to expand its sales and service provisions for the UNVI range of products. Facilities include a modern 3 bay workshop with stores, offi ce complex, drive through bus wash, lift s, rolling road brake tester etc. Signifi cant investment has taken place in the last few years in terms of staff training and installation of diagnostic equipment. Spare part stock levels have increased substantially with most part requests dispatched on the same day. Central Bus & Coach has received offi cial approval from Mercedes-Benz as an original parts stockist and is also approved by most insurance companies for glazing repairs.

Central Bus & Coach founder and Managing Director Liam Farrelly (pictured) said that although 2010 and 2011 were quiet on the sales front it gave the fi rm a chance to build strong foundations in the parts and service department. Because of the long-standing partnership and tradition for UNVI to use Mercedes-Benz chassis and powertrains, it is essential that UNVI dealers have the competence to service the complete vehicle. Central Bus & Coach has invested heavily in Mercedes Benz aft ersales and aft ercare programmes.

In Ireland UNVI as a brand is well established. Currently there are over 600 UNVI built buses and coaches in Ireland. One of the challenges for Central Bus & Coach was to put a solid infrastructure in place. Five employees from the previous UNVI distributor are now employed by Central Bus & Coach and with over sixty years experience between them, Liam Farrelly is confi dent that his company has a team that operators can put their trust in. 2012 has seen a signifi cant increase in new sales and signifi cantly CBC has appointed P.J. Keoghan as Sales Manager. P.J. is well known within the industry and has signifi cant experience with the UNVI brand.

Liam concluded, “I have had 25 years experience as an operator and I know that when choosing a new bus the most important considerations for me were, (a) the vehicle and (b) the dealer. Did the supplier have the

back up needed in terms of parts and product knowledge was another question asked. In Central Bus & Coach we have focussed on gett ing the aft ersales right and I believe the sales will follow.

SPANISH RED CROSS CHOOSE UNVI

Optare is to enter the small and accessible bus market this year

with an all new Optare-badged model – the Bonito. Th e Mini-cum-Midi bus, produced in the Netherlands by Plastisol to Optare’s specifi cation, will be sold directly by Optare’s sales force and represents a growth opportunity for the company.

The Bonito will go on sale to British operators from June, with potential export sales in other European markets following on. It uses a fully integrated composite body structure with accommodation for up to 16 passengers and no separate chassis. It is based on the highly

successful Fiat Ducato Maxi light commercial vehicle which features a gross vehicle weight of 4 tonnes, powered by a 2999cc 157bhp diesel engine, and mated to a choice of six speed manual or semi-automatic transmissions.

Full specifi cation details of the new Bonito will be announced in the near future. Simultaneously with its entry into the small bus market, Optare is announcing that it is to withdraw from the small luxury coach market, bringing to an end its long term partnership with Spanish coachbuilder Ferqui which has supplied a range of

Optare-badged, Mercedes-based products.

At the recent United Motorcoach Association (UMA) Expo bus trade

show in Long Beach, California, the Setra brand showcased an exclusive TopClass S 417 touring coach and ComfortClass S 407. Th is year’s exhibits featured the Electronic Stability Program ESP which is standard-fi t on US touring coaches provided by the Ulm-based brand from now on.

Th e Setra TopClass S 417 on show was fi tt ed with a glass roof, rear window and reversing camera among other features. In the interior, the touring coach has a wooden fl oor. Since the launch of the TopClass S 417 in 2003, around 960 units of the luxury touring coach have been sold in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Unlike the Setra TopClass S 417, which makes use of the European design concept, the Setra ComfortClass S 407 is a classic touring coach based on North American design concepts,

representing an att ractive alternative in the business segment.

Th e visual appearance of this high-quality touring coach is characterised by the standard American mirror system, as well as “Made in the USA” front and rear bumpers. Whereas at the rear of the vehicle this mechanism is securely bolted to the framework body, the front bumper can be folded down to provide access to the storage area for the spare wheel. A strong framework structure in the front area as well as the bumpers help to absorb any forces in the event of

the vehicle being involved in a collision – a design which fully complies with American APTA guidelines.

Fu n t o r o i s s e t t o revolutionise bus/coach travel entertainment.

With its new MCA system, up to 120 passengers will have the opportunity to choose from up to 32 audio-channels and listen to their favourite music in digital quality. It does not need MP3 or any other player as all content is stored on the SD card with a capacity of up to 32GB. Monitors can also be connected, while one channel can be used for movie audio.

In addition, a microphone can be att ached for the driver or guide to make announcements with the playback temporarily paused and automatically

restarted once the speech has been delivered. Funtoro MCA also caters for sightseeing buses. With connected Telematics server and

GPS antenna, specifi c content can be played based on the position of the bus. While the bus is passing an att raction or monument, passengers get the information about it. P laxton’s fl agship Elite will be introduced later this year off ering an option for roll-on access for wheelchair users, and a full length cabin to provide the optimum combination

of capacity and comfort. Th e new model will be the fi rst through-deck coach to be built in Britain and has been developed to off er wheelchair passengers easier access while at the same time maximising capacity.

Th e fi rst customer for the new model will be Stagecoach, which has ordered eleven on Volvo chassis for delivery in 2012-13. Th ey will be used on the popular megabus.com network. Th e new coach will be available from the last quarter of this year, initially as a 15m model confi gured for express service operation. Alternative lengths and layouts will be off ered from early in 2013.“We initially launched the Elite as a high-specifi cation tri-axle 14m coach in 2008, but always intended that it would develop into a range of top-quality models,” says Plaxton sales and marketing director Kevin Wood. “First was the 12.6m two-axle model followed by the maximum length 15m in 2009, and now comes the Interdeck Elite, which will be available both as an express coach and as a touring model.”

“Two features stand out” Kevin stressed, “First, there is no need to fi t a wheelchair lift , which benefi ts users in that they have much bett er access, and benefi ts operators by reducing maintenance and training requirements. Th e second feature is the ability to off er up to 72 seats, but with the fl exibility to off er a wide range of seating layouts, as we do on all our models.”

Investment in the new model by ADL in its Plaxton division is in the region of £1million. Th e new coach will be based on the well proven stainless steel technology of Panther and Elite, but will usher in an entirely new structure to accommodate the 3.9m high vehicle and off ers the potential for additional models in the future. Th e Plaxton range is widely recognised as a leader in terms of combining durability with

low weight and the aim is to retain a high degree of parts commonality. A key distinguishing feature will be a restyled profi le, necessary to accommodate the through-fl oor design.

“Th is is an exciting addition to our market-leading range,” Kevin Wood concludes, “and as well as building coaches for megabus.com we will be in a position to take orders for delivery to other customers in time for the 2013 season.”

From 2001, the Mini took on a whole new life under the guile and craft smanship of now owners, BMW.

While remaining true to its roots from the days of the original model that dates back to 1959, what has happened since remains questionable in many eyes. Cooper, John Cooper Works and Coupé/ Convertible versions followed but it was with the Clubman that many genuine enthusiasts felt that the Germans took the marque a step too far. Th e Clubman with its ‘suicide rear doors’ is no Countryman or Traveller from the days of yore. And when the Countryman did arrive in 2011, the love aff air had truly begun to dwindle. Th at said, the 4 door hatch’s exploits on the Dakar Rally in X-Raid colours are commendable, not to mention the honour bestowed on it as the WRC Car of the Year with another evolution of same.

Maybe, it is time that we separated the 20th Century and 21st Century Mini once and for all? Th e Litt le Book of Mini, is a good place to start. We have all heard of Alec Issigonis’ paper napkin drawing of his concept with its compact and clearer dimensions. Even

when the prototype was produced, litt le changes to the final assembly version were made.

Just like the Beetle, variations of the theme were made, and it wasn’t long before success was achieved on the race circuits and rally stages particularly once specialist engineer John Cooper got his hands on it. One of the highlights of these achievements was the winning of the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally in the hands of Irishman Paddy Hopkirk. Rebadged and restyled versions namely Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornet att racted a diff erent level of customer to the BMC owned brand and towards the latt er end of its fi rst life, special editions were added in order to complete with a growing marketplace. Competition also came from within its British Leyland establishment with the Mini Metro aiming to appeal to the masses but as we all know the Mini went on to outlast it.

When BMW took over Rover, it fi rmly set its eyes on the iconic Mini as the one model to hold on to as it threw away the rest although the job done on the Rover 75 is to be commended. But that’s a story for another day. Th e Mini lives on!

It is no coincidence that this latest book to pay tribute to the legendary Volkswagen Beetle ties in with the

launch of its latest incarnation. Visitors (like myself) to Motorshows from Frankfurt to Tokyo witnessed the birth of the new model, which bears true to the generations before it. Based on the Jett a platform other components used come from the Golf range.

Th e 126 page story begins (as do all the others) with German Chancellors Adolf Hitler’s vision for a car of the people – a volks wagen and aft er teaming up with Ferdinand Porsche prototypes were developed from Hitler’s own drawings in addition to Porsche’s studio work. Production soon began in Lower Saxony at Fallersleben which had to diversify into military operations during World War II. Aft er the Emergency, export orders were met and variations on the theme added such as a convertible. By May 1955 the one millionth Beetle with its air-cooled, rear-mounted, rear-wheel drive layout had been manufactured. As the evolution of the Beetle progressed, engine size and power output increased while the basic shape remained the same.

Th ursday 17 February 1972 marked the day the Beetle surpassed the Ford Model T as the world’s most popular car of all time with 15,007,034 produced. European production fi nally came to a halt on 19 January 1978. Assembly continued in Mexico until 2003 to when the fi nal chapter of Porsche’s masterpiece drew to a close.

But the Beetle story does not end there, as the lovable Bug was set to make a comeback, with an all-new model conceived at VW’s

American Design Centre in Simi Valley. Funky and fl ash, it att racted a whole new generation of followers and those ignorant of the long history of the lovable ‘Bug’ can catch up on the Beetle’s ancestry by reading this superb collection of chapters put together by Jon Stroud matched with superb photography. It is ironic therefore that the company Porsche started and has since been subsumed into the Volkswagen Group (developed into an iconic sportscar brand).

CONDUCTOR'S STAND

I arrived by train from Limerick to Dublin recently for the fi rst time in a long time. It was a Friday and there were a good few empty seats around. When I arrived at Heuston Station the number of people around had increased substantially. At the end of the main working week, the concourse area

would in the past be very busy. All day groups for hen parties, stag parties and lots of others started their weekend break. While there I noticed that most of the buses belonging to public and private operators were also far from full. Th is is of course a symptom of the state of the economy, not as much money around, but less activity means less travelling and more empty seats on buses. Sounds very negative but could the situation be turned around and become more positive?

Th is lends me to ponder on a few points. For sure the economy will improve at some stage, money and activity will return. We might be back to the old problem of trying to get people back to using Public Transport and leave the car at home. No doubt this is a challenge for every Government and City Council throughout the world. It has never been successful when you try to legislate people out of their cars and onto Public Transport. What if you encouraged people into using Public Transport by way of tax incentives? Of course there are incentives there at the moment to buy a yearly commuter ticket. But I think it is fair to say that market has probably been almost fully exploited now. One of the problems with this scheme is you have to pay in advance and you are tied in for a long period of time.

If a system was implemented that you could retain your used tickets to make a claim against your annual tax, it might persuade commuters to use their cars less and maybe over a period convert them to using Public Transport. Of course there could be fl aws with any system or incentive like this.

I have no doubt that if the Government were to explore some options like this the industry b y c ompe t i ng with each other would enhance the fare structures for passengers. It might seem a bit optimistic to be talking too much about economic recover y but it will happen some day and hopefully soon. Now is the time to encourage people into using Public Transport because they want to and it makes economic sense.

North America makes the Smart Move!Smart Move is gaining signifi cant momentum as it expands worldwide from Europe to the United States! Th is global reach, which increases daily with new partners and supporters, speaks for itself as evidence of the many benefi ts of Smart Move values to communities and future generations. And yet, U.S. transport policy makers are on the brink of making a serious mistake that would fail to deliver fair transport via bus and coach to the communities who need them most. Fortunately, cities such as Bogotá in Colombia and Coventry in the United Kingdom, are making the Smart Move and enjoying the economic, social and environmental rewards of effi cient bus and coach transport systems.
