EXHIBITION ON SCREEN – VAN GOGH AND JAPAN
Tue 4 Jun, 7.30pm £12
In a reimagined 1590, England is a matriarchy. Baptista Minola is seeking to sell off her son Katherine to the highest bidder. Cue an explosive battle of the sexes in this electrically charged love story. Justin Audibert (Snow in Midsummer, The Jew of Malta) turns Shakespeare’s fierce, energetic comedy of gender and materialism on its head to offer a fresh perspective on its portrayal of hierarchy and power.
In the exhibition on which this film is based – 'Van Gogh and Japan' at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam - one can see the profound influence of Japan on this artist and his work. After leaving Paris for the South of France, we see just how important his study of Japan was.
The film travels to France, the Netherlands and Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know today.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake comes to cinemas with a fresh look for the 21st century and is as bold and beautiful as ever.
This thrilling, audacious and witty production is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered convention, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm.
Filmed live at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London.
The contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is shown in works from three of today's leading choreographers with two recent works and one world premiere.Christopher Wheeldon's ‘Within the Golden Hour’ is based around couples intermingling, to music by Vivaldi and Bosso and lit with rich sunset colours.
Crystal Pite's ‘Flight Pattern’, revived for the first time, uses a large dance ensemble and music from Górecki's ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs'.
A new work by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, created on The Royal Ballet brings the contemporary truly up to date.

Shakespeare’s enduring love story is known the world over. Since its 1965 premiere with The Royal Ballet, Kenneth MacMillan’s 'Romeo and Juliet' with music by Sergei Prokofiev, has become a modern ballet classic. The choreography captures the emotions of the young couple as they fall in love, despite the barriers that finally cause the story’s tragic end. The Company brings the colour and action of Renaissance Verona, where a busy market all too quickly bursts into sword fighting, and a family feud leads to tragedy for both the Montagues and Capulets.

‘To whom should I complain?’
When a young novice nun is compromised by a corrupt official, who offers to save her brother from execution in return for sex, she has no idea where to turn for help. When she threatens to expose him, he tells her that no one would believe her. Shakespeare wrote this play in the early 1600s, yet it remains astonishingly resonant today. Artistic Director, Gregory Doran, directs this new production.
Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize -winning novel 'Small Island' comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation filmed live on stage as part of NT Live’s 10th birthday.
'Small Island' embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – when the Windrush docked at Tilbury. The play follows three intricately connected stories as hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK.

Pupils at Dartmouth Academy welcome the opportunity to showcase their very high quality work through Art and Design and Photography at their annual Summer Exhibition. Pupils use a wide range of media, techniques and processes to arrive at a series of personal outcomes. Staff, parents and pupils, are very proud of all they have achieved.
‘The Art and Design and Photography departments at Dartmouth Academy are really good as, right from the start, you are filled with confidence that you will succeed’ Cara Shipton, Year 11
Composition, surface and colour are prominent in this exhibition of painting and printmaking. Alison's themes include trees in the landscape and architectural features such as arches, columns and wrought iron spirals, while Emma is inspired by the Devon landscape and coastline and she often embellishes her richly coloured collagraphs with stitching and beadwork.

The theme for the 2019 Flavel Annual Open Art Exhibition is ‘Shadows and Light’. If you would like to submit an original drawing, painting, print, photograph, 3D work or textile for consideration please see our website www.theflavel.org.uk for full details and to download an application form, or collect one from the Box Office. Prizes are generously sponsored by The David Alexander Open Art Exhibition Fund: the Winner's prize is £200 cash, and the runner up will receive a £50 Flavel gift voucher.
'Dogs in Ink' is, well, just that…..original portraits and caricatures of dogs hand drawn in ink. Chris Green produces commissioned work starting from a photograph, making a simple pencil outline sketch and gradually building up the detail with black ink on cartridge paper or producing caricatures by drawing live and producing an immediate image.
His genuine love of dogs shines through, producing images that capture the spirit, quirkiness and personality of each dog.
Anne Furness owns her own ceramic studio workshop by the sea in South Devon, an area of great natural beauty, and is constantly affected by the nature that surrounds her. She is particularly interested in textures and surfaces and is continually looking for ways to transfer these influences to her work.

I work in soft pastel, with the end result being bright, bold and contem-porary.
For me, drawing pictures with bright colours that make people feel better is, and always has been, a really good thing to do.
Living in South Devon, I’m able to explore this beautiful area of out-standing natural beauty every day, capturing the sea and landscape in my work in all its colours. All the work in my exhibition is original.

Judy and Jan met several years ago, a friendship developing based on mutual respect for each other's work. Though painting in very different styles they both gain inspiration from each other and their fascination with the colours, textures and constantly changing moods of the Devon landscape, which they try to convey through their art.
