Iowa Area Development Group is proud to have supported the application of four business expansion projects that have been awarded funds through the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant (REDL&G) program.

Western Iowa Power Cooperative (WIPCO) is providing a $300,000 loan to assist Burgess Health Center (BHC) in opening a Medically Oriented Gym (MOG) in Onawa. The new facility will address chronic health issues that are prominent in the area, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and arthritis. A MOG is different from a typical fi tness center in that a member’s exercise plan is developed and supervised by physical therapy professionals, based on an initial fi tness screen by a physical therapist. Every 90 days the memberis re-evaluated and the exercise program is adjusted as needed. Nutritional consultations are also available. Coordination between the MOG and the member’s primary care provider regarding the member’s progress is ongoing. The Onawa MOG will be a 4,300 sq. ft. remodeled area within the main building of Burgess Health Center that iscurrently occupied by other groups. This space will be reconfi gured to house the MOG, physical therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation. WIPCO received a $250,000 grant from the USDA REDL&G program to support the project. This, plus a $50,000 match from WIPCO will be loaned to

BHC. Repayment of the $300,000 loan will go into a revolving loan fund

and be available to support future projects. Onawa Municipal Utilities provides power to the Burgess Health Center.

Iowa Area Development Group’s member systems have been instrumental in partnering with Iowa communities to establish 95 industrial parks and over 7,200 acres of prime industrial ground. Collectively, IADG Partners have also constructed

Promoting Iowa to Prospects and Industry PartnersIADG and our partners continue to actively promote Iowa at industry trade shows. Iowa is Leading with Certified SitesThe Iowa Certifi ed Sites Program continues to expand and Iowa utility partners are helping to lead the growth. In July, Governor Terry Branstad announced certifi cation of sites in Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Norwalk, Marion, Mason City and Perry. Adding these to the original four sites of Fort Dodge, Iowa Falls, Van Meter, and Dexter; Iowa now has ten Certifi ed Sites.

In addition, Governor Branstad announced plans to roll outa pilot “Green Certifi cation” to take place in Woodward,Iowa. This project is a fi rst of its kind in the nation andwill put Woodward and Iowa on the map. The WoodwardEco-Business Park got underway this year with a $50,000grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority andIowa Energy Offi ce. The 20 percent match was provided from local businesses including Minburn Communications, Guthrie County Rural Electric Cooperative, and the City of Woodward. The project also received a $3,500 grant from Ripple Effect. A key point of this new category is the commitment to adhere to sustainable development and the requirement to develop and adopt covenants that will provide strong guidance for the future development of the Green Business Park.

While working on the Woodward project, the IADG Telecom Advisory Panel led by Sue Cosner, IADG Vice President of Community Initiatives, and Deb Lucht, General Manager of Minburn

Communications; found the site certifi cation criteria lackingin proper telecommunication service requirements. The Telecom Advisory Panel then met with McCallum Sweeney Consulting, (the State’s site certifi cation consulting fi rm), to educate them on how existing telecom requirements did not allow for enough bandwidth to sustain a business park. The panel submitted modifi ed criteria recommendations to the consulting fi rm which resulted in McCallum Sweeney modifying the requirements and the State of Iowa accepting them into their site certifi cation criteria. Today, the minimum requirement for all new certifi ed development sites in Iowa now includes advanced fi ber connectivity.

Site certifi cation is one of the fastest growing trends in the site selection business. By going through this rigorous process, all site due diligence is completed and resulting issues are mitigated, making the site “risk-free” and thus accelerating the development schedule.

Iowa Area Development Group is proud to have supported the application of four business expansion projects that have been awarded funds through the USDA Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant (REDL&G) program.

North West Rural Electric Cooperative successfully secured a $300,000 grant from the USDA REDL&G program to support an extensive renovation and expansion project for Hawarden Regional Healthcare (HRH), located in Hawarden, Iowa. This projectconsists of approximately 20,000 sq. ft. of new construction, which includes centralized waiting, a new operating room, expanded emergency department, radiology, laboratory, clinic space, dining, and support areas. The renovation portion of the project consists of 12,900 sq. ft. of the existing facility and includes the renovation of medical surgical support, patient rooms, support offi ces, maintenance

and circulation spaces. This will allow HRH to provide high-quality healthcare services in a modern facility with state-of-the-art equipment. The

project is expected to create fi ve new jobs and retain the hospital’s 66 full-time staff.

In addition to the $300,000 REDL&G funds, North West REC provided a $60,000 match to assist the project.Repayment of these funds will go into a revolving loan fund to support future community and business development projects in the area.
