Finally I’m academically finished!

Page 4: Five lessons

’96 ’97 ’98 ’99 ’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10

I didn’t have a job sorted yet so now what?

Page 5: Five lessons

’96 ’97 ’98 ’99 ’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10

Short term contracting at a startup

Page 6: Five lessons

’96 ’97 ’98 ’99 ’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10

Gave me a chance to find longer term work in London

Page 7: Five lessons

Lesson 1 Is it best to go with the Big brand or the unknown startup?

Page 8: Five lessons

’96 ’97 ’98 ’99 ’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10

so I decided to go with the small guys

Page 9: Five lessons

’96 ’97 ’98 ’99 ’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10

3 1/2 years and 6 fold growth laterthere was something wrong however...

Page 10: Five lessons

Lesson 2 Some times you need to move on to keep learning

Page 11: Five lessons

’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14

So I decided to move to a consultancy

Page 12: Five lessons

which really meant working for

’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14

Page 13: Five lessons

Lesson 3 Indepth understanding of domains (little ironic in the banking industry?)

Page 14: Five lessons

’00 ’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14

Unfortunately I was still on the same project after a yearthe opposite reason I joined a consultancy

Page 15: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

Its around this time that Taglab where looking for a new Technical Director

Page 16: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

So I agreed to join the board of directors as CTOand take a stake in the company

Page 17: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

It was not quite as great as it seemed...

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

My predecessor had left for a reason

Page 20: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

We had problems...

Page 21: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

Some we created

Page 22: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

actually quite a few

Page 23: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

but also plenty we didn’t

Page 24: Five lessons

Lesson 4 Communication & Teamwork

Page 25: Five lessons

’01 ’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15

So we rolled up our sleeves

Page 26: Five lessons

’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15 ’16

Introduced agile techniques like XP, Kanban andDomain Driven Design

Page 27: Five lessons

’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15 ’16

there was also the controversial pirate and fez hat theory

Page 28: Five lessons

’02 ’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15 ’16

The was will one big problem we had not solved...

Page 29: Five lessons

Page 30: Five lessons

’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15 ’16 ’17

Which brings me to here and now

Page 31: Five lessons

So now what?

’03 ’04 ’05 ’06 ’07 ’08 ’09 ’10 ’11 ’12 ’13 ’14 ’15 ’16 ’17

Summarising

Don’t feel you have to work at a big brand to be a big fish

In this industry you (must) never stop learning

Creating great software requires deep understanding of its domain

Great business’ depend on communication & teamwork

Be passionate about what you do

Don't be afraid of taking risks and aiming high
