*Schedule is subject to change

Not only will you begin your first year seminar course, bond with faculty and students, and become adjusted to your environment, First Week also affords you the fantastic opportunity to explore issues unique to the first year student. You will learn what it means to be an ethical decision maker and how to demonstrate academic integrity; you will dialogue with peers about what it means to value differences. You will be led by your mentors in an exercise designed to break down harmful perceptions of the role alcohol plays on a college campus. Finally, you will have the opportunity to be a part of several traditions of Millikin University. Your First Week experience will formally close with two longstanding academic traditions: the Candlelight Ceremony and Opening Convocation.

An integral part of your first week on campus is beginning your University Seminar course. University Seminar is intended to be a unique learning opportunity for first year students entering Millikin University. University Seminar introduces students to college-level academic inquiry by focusing on two key skills: (1) critical and ethical reasoning, and (2) reflection. These skills are indispensible to professional success, democratic citizenship in a global environment, and the discovery and creation of a personal life of meaning and value. In addition, University Seminar blends theory and practice by engaging students in service learning and by addressing specific student success topics. As seen on the schedule, you will spend a fair amount of time with your fellow classmates, First-Year Experience Mentors, and faculty. By beginning this first course before your other classes, you will begin to understand how your college courses will be different from your high school experience. You also will have an opportunity to make important connections with faculty members and First-Year Experience Mentors.

For those individuals who are required to audition or sign up for placement, please refer to the audition schedule located online at millikin.edu/firstweek.
