F IRST PRE SBYTE RIAN CHURCH GALLATIN TN JUNE/JULY 2019 V OL. 27 ISSUE 5

In Touch Where God’s love overflows and serving begins.

I once heard a quote from the late actor John Wayne. When asked what real courage was, he replied, “Courage is being scared to

death – but saddling up anyway.” Many people think that a courageous person has no fear, but that’s not so. Courageous people

have fear, but they go in anyway. They have fear, but they don’t stop. They have fear, but they press on.

As we look at our news reports and learn about this dangerous world we live in, I want you to know that the Presbyterian

denomination will be asking you to show courage. I realize it won’t be easy. I know it often won’t be what you want. But as

we look at our world, we must understand that church is not only a place where we can come to feel good – about where we

are, about what we do, or even about how we do good stuff. It’s also a place of sanctuary, and a place of safety. As a denomi-

nation, and also as a Gallatin church within the Presbyterian denomination, we must be known as a place for healing, peace,

and safety in a culture of recurring violence.

Your Session members have voted to look seriously into the safety of this building, and the safety of our people, in the

presence of perceived violence against them. We have the added responsibility to protect, as best we can, the children whose

parents leave them in our care daily. We take that vote of confidence very personally, and we want the children who spend

time here to be safe….. always. You think bad things don’t happen here in Middle Tennessee? I’m sorry, they do. You think

they don’t happen here in Gallatin? I’m sorry, they do. You think it won’t happen here at FPC? Yep. And because we must

ready ourselves for the unexpected, you may be asked to be part of a Security Team. You may be asked to take part in a

Sunday morning drill. And you will be asked to understand that we don’t want to need this, any more than you do. Having

professional help available, through the work and the gifts of this church, allows survivors to realize that God cares, that

they are not alone, and that the church is a safe place to seek and to find help.

So, look around you – but look with both eyes wide open. This isn’t a magical place. It’s a place where evil resides. It’s a

place where safety isn’t guaranteed. It’s a place where folks you see, and folks you know could be at risk – just like in the

newspapers. And we’ve decided that we won’t condone silence about it any longer.

Thank you for being a part of a church and a denomination that intends to leave this world a better place than we found it.

Long Hollow Alpacas was started in 2002, on a

way road trip for animals. Raising Alpacas is their

cruelty-free alternative! In 2008 they moved to

their new 62 acre facility Last year, their alpaca

fiber was knit into scarves as gifts for CMA

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (L M M)

Where God’s love overflows and serving begins.

V B ! S#! VBS is only about one month away! June

10-14, 9am-noon. We are moving along

well with our plans for Bible stories and

related activities as well as creating the

scene for a launch day for Mars and

Beyond. Ephesians 3:20 says in part,

“Glory to God, who is able to do far

beyond all that we could ask or imagine

by his power at work within us!” This

will be our mantra for the week. EP3-20 the robot is getting excited about

seeing everyone and sharing the good news! If we have not invited you to be

with us during the week, help us prepare, or supply something we might need,

we apologize. All are welcome and encouraged to be with us in body, mind,

and spirit! Thank you so much to all who gave us craft tubes (empty tp rolls).

We are excited to see what they become during VBS. Below is a list of items

that are needed::

Water Color Paint Sets (Dollar Tree)

Hand Sanitizer

4 Large Packages of Googly Eyes (assorted sizes)

Sets of Poster Paints (Dollar Tree)

4 Large Rolls of Aluminum Foil

Paper Towels

Lysol/Clorox Wipes

16 oz. Empty Water Bottles

AA and AAA Batteries

4 Boxes of Alka-Seltzer

7 Packs of Glitter Glue Pens (assorted colors) or large containers with tips

1 Package of Assorted Colored Fuzzy Sticks (pipe cleaners)

Stomp Rockets for Recreation; would love to borrow at least 2 sets; they are

available for purchase as well and could be used by the preschool after VBS

Snacks Each Day for Staff: We have snacks for the children, but we like to

have coffee/donuts/cookies/cakes, something for those who have volunteered

their time to make this a great time of learning about God’s love.

Of course monetary donations are always the correct size and color if you are

unable to assist with any of these items.

Thank you in advance for your help and support. Fasten your seat restraint and

prepare to lift off “To Mars and Beyond!”

The Learning More Committee is seeking your help and suggestions for a couple of positions. The first is for a SUNDAY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT. Duties would initially include begining available on Sundays from 8:55am until 9:50am, making sure the classes have their attendance books. The position would also be responsible to collect the attendance books and record the attendance in a register in the main office. Training would be available. The second position would be for the CHURCH LIBRARIAN. This position would initially require more than 1 hour per week and include shelving and purchas-ing books, monitor overdue books, catalog book donations and other duties as they arise. Training for this position could be available.

New classes are about to begin at Gallatin FPC!!! The INQUIRERS class will be held 6/2/19, 6/9/19 and 6/16/19 starting promptly at 8:45 AM in the Library. This class is for ANYONE who has an interest about being Presbyterian…from visitors to new members to Cradle Presbyterians to old Presbyterians…EVERYONE is welcome! We would really like to hear from the Congrega-tion your thoughts and opinions!!!

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING 11:00 AM,

JUNE 9, 2019 After evaluating multiple options, the

Session has recommended that FPC

proceed with efforts to sell the

property located at 114 South Locust

Avenue (former CAP building). In

order to start the process, a Realtor

must be selected and the property

listed. Accordingly, a brief Congrega-

tional Meeting is scheduled for June 9,

2019, immediately after Sunday

Service, in order to inform members

of this proposed action.

Once a potential buyer is identified

and a price is established, another

Congregational Meeting will be

scheduled in order for FPC members

to finalize any sale.

Boy Scouts Our Boy Scouts came up with a creative way to place a flag on a mausoleum in

recognition of Memorial Day.

DROP THE MIC (COMMUNICATIONS)

Where God’s love overflows and serving begins.

Let's Be Social!! The church's new communication team -- we call ourselves the Drop The Mic Committee -- has been meeting monthly to work on improv-ing the communication process, both within our church family and with the community. One of our big goals is to give our website a much-needed facelift. That's a slow process, but we're learning as we go. We've also been busy setting up social media accounts. In addition to Facebook, we now have Instagram and Twitter accounts. If you are on any of those platforms, please see the account names below and connect with us. And then, help us spread the word. While we love it when you "Like" a post on Facebook, what's more important is for you to "Share" it, especially if it's an event that the community is invited to. We will also be utilizing the event feature. If we invite you to an event and you plan to attend, or are even thinking of attending, please mark the appropriate box. When you do, that shows up on your friends' timelines so they notice the event as well. We're still learning about Twitter and Instagram, so we definitely could use your help there as well On Twitter, you can retweet our tweets so that your friends see it. On Instagram, we'll be using hashtags. (We know. There's a lot to learn.)

We also need pictures! Take pictures of your Sunday School class, your Circle events, Wednesday night dinner, the sunlight coming through the stained glass windows. Anything and everything. We might not use them all, but we need lots of pictures. Consider the composition - smiling faces, close-ups, different angles. Send your pics to [email protected]. (We proba-bly won't credit you, but let us know if that's important to you. Also, if you're snapping a picture of a person, make sure they don't mind! And if it's a child, please speak to the parent first.) If you take the picture on your phone, you can tap it and choose email to send it. And finally, we need information. Circle members -- let us know when you're meeting and give us a little info about your lesson. Committee chairs -- please keep us up to date with your meeting times and let us know what's going on. With your help, we can show everyone all the work that's being done behind the scenes, get more people involved, and let the commu-nity see what a vibrant, busy little church we are here at First Presbyter-ian Church Gallatin! SHARING GOD’S LOVE THROUGH WORD AND SACRAMENT (WORSHIP)

Coming this summer to FPC, Gallatin: The Great Preacher Rotation During June and July, three PC(USA) pastors will rotate pulpits, to give you the chance to hear the Word pro-claimed in different voices. The participants are: the Reverend Michael Davis, FPC Hendersonville, the Rev Sherard Edington, FPC Lebanon, and me. The last Sunday of June and the last Sunday of July, the three of us will be traveling to each other’s churches to lead worship.

While we’re there, we’d like to know what’s special about each church and each congregation. So, when Michael and Sherard arrive, I hope you’ll gush about how superb things are in Gallatin, and how the congregation is serving God in awesome ways. Tell them that you think FPC Gallatin is the best Presbyterian church in these here parts. Tell them that you’d never want to be a part of any other congregation. Tell them they should stay and have brunch with you, and you can tell them more!

Yeah, that’d be great. As a matter of fact, that’d be the “great” part of the preacher rotation. So, tell ‘em that, and even more. But when you tell them, make sure it’s true. If I could be here on those Sundays, that’s what I’d tell them. And thanks so much, Candice
