First Presbyterian Church - 6 - 2017
A few years ago I referred to some research that came out of the Barna Group referring to current
trends in church attendance. David Kinnaman, President of that research group said that,
“Churchgoing is slowly but undeniably losing its role as a normative part of American
life.”
This change of behavior is disheartening in light of Christ’s imperative to make disciples in
Matthew 28. However, there is also something to be learned by this research as we who are
concerned Christians reflect on our responsibility to be witnesses for Jesus Christ in this
changing world.
One conclusion that arises from this research is that the unchurched population is steadily
growing. Since 1990, the unchurched population,
“Has jumped from 30 percent of U.S. adults to 43 percent.”
Those who are considered “unchurched,” have not attended a church service in the last six (6)
months. Weddings and funerals do not count as church attendance.
Second, the number of people who have never been active churchgoers has increased. In the last
twenty (20) years, the unchurched has increased from 15 to 23 percent. Currently, around 1 in 4
has no prior church history participation which is nearly 61 million adults.
Thirdly, what has qualified as regular church attendance has also changed, according to this
study. Active attendees used to be defined as someone who attended 3-4 times per month. Now,
active attendees are those who go to church 1-2 weekends per month.
Despite all of these facts, Barna says that the church is still seen as a valuable part of a local
community, even among the unchurched. Only 7 percent of the unchurched see a church as a
negative factor for their neighborhood.
What does this say to us? First of all, Christians need to see that the sharing of one’s faith with
others is part of what is necessary to see the church move forward in the future. This is part of
our calling as Christians and not just the pastor’s responsibility (Acts 1:8). Many of you are
taking that initiative.
Second, we need to be equipped to share our faith in Jesus Christ with others so that all people
might become a child of God. What is the gospel?
God has a wonderful plan for each of our lives that leads to abundant living (John
10:10. “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”).
Humanity has a spiritual problem and it is sin which separates us from God and
disrupts God’s plan for our lives (“Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fallen short
of the glory of God.”).
![Page 7: FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/firstpresbyterianchurch8...February 7, 2017 1. Opening Prayer - Pastor John opened this annual meeting of the First](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022071105/5fdf64b6784fd452134e6e94/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
First Presbyterian Church - 7 - 2017
God has provided a solution to this spiritual need by providing a sacrifice that will
eliminate the consequences of our sin and restore us to fellowship with God forever.
This sacrifice is the sacrifice of God’s own dear Son, Jesus Christ, on the Cross (John
3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever
believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life.”).
We must accept God’s free gift of Jesus Christ and His salvation for us by inviting
Jesus Christ into our lives and receive him as our Lord and Savior (John 1:12, “But to
all who received him, who believed on his name, he gave power to become children
of God.”).
Finally we need to thank God for becoming his child through Jesus Christ.
Who has a need to know God’s wonderful message of love among your friends? Let us all pray
that God will give us the opportunity and the words to share this message of love.
Third, as members of the church, we need to go out to our broken world and bring the love of
Christ to people, not only through our words of testimony but through our actions as well. If we
don’t’ go, people won’t know. Certainly, our tutoring group is demonstrating the love of Christ
to kids at the middle school, and our 5th
Tuesday cook team is doing the same at the Grace
Resurrection Center. How can you help? Who can you reach out to at work?
Finally, we need to make our church a welcoming place by providing non-threatening entry
points so that people have an opportunity to have their needs met and develop meaningful
relationships with Christians. Sunday school classes need to do service projects in the
community which can include their non-Christian friends. Social events need to be planned
where again Christians can invite their non-Christian friends to attend and get to know members
of the church. This kind of welcoming church requires that we all take responsibility to reach out
to those who do not have a church home and make them feel at home. Who can we invite?
People are looking for meaningful relationships. As members of First Presbyterian Church, we
can provide those relationships to a community that is often times craving that attention. As
Christians, Jesus gave us love. And that love needs to be shared.
Perhaps we won’t turn Greenville upside down, but if we touch one life per member what a
difference that would make to our church, to the kingdom of God, and to eternity. While the
times are changing, we can still make a difference. Who can we reach out to and share Christ’s
love? The world is depending upon us even if it doesn’t recognize its own need. It only takes a
spark to get a fire going. Let each of us be that spark.
God bless you all. You are a wonderful congregation. Your love is a bright light in this
community.
Power and blessing,
Pastor John

First Presbyterian Church - 8 - 2017
Deacon’s 2017 Annual Year-End Report
Our Board of Deacon’s is a quiet, sometimes seemingly invisible, servant to the First
Presbyterian Church and community. We have the honor and privilege to serve the members of
our community in need with the Deacon’s Assistance Fund. These needs are handled with
respect and dignity to help provide food, utilities and housing needs to our community. This
program provides up to 4 households or individuals each month with no more than $50.00
assistance each per calendar year. The applications are now available online and require that you
are a Darke County resident. Angie Spurlock, church secretary, will screen these applications
for eligibility. Those that are eligible are then presented to the President and once approved are
paid to the vendor, not the applicant. If a request is in excess of the allotted amount or a special
request is made, the Board of Deacons will meet to discuss the application before accepting or
denying the request with a majority vote. We provide the community with at least $2,400.00
annually through this mission.
The Board of Deacon’s is blessed with a very generous church family, donations from
individuals, Christmas Eve offering and two special soup and salad fundraisers, one in the spring
and one in the fall. The Deacon’s work very hard for these fundraisers and the congregation is
very supportive of us. Through these combined efforts we are able to provide these gifts for
people less fortunate.
The Board of Deacon’s for 2017 included: Pam Bowman, Cathy Cornell, Bill Klein, Shirley
Headley, Beth Vehre, Randy Tester, Tim Kuhn, Gina Fryman, Diane Amick, Mindy Rehmert,
Linda Stoltz, Phyllis Trittschuh, and Youth Representatives Zach Baker and Annie Hayes.
Special projects throughout the year performed by the Board of Deacon’s include:
† Scheduling greeters
† Scheduling Altar flowers, when applicable
† Visitation with shut-ins (congregants)
† Donations to First Presbyterian Youth Group in honor of Mother’s Day and Father’s
Day
† Heading Faith Day at Great Darke County Fair
† Community Bell Ringing
† Organizing cards for congregants in ill health and our Military Service members.
† Providing coffee hour for the second Sunday of the month
† Donation for disaster relief in Texas
† Working with First Friday with Main Street Greenville
Thank you for your support and prayers for our Church and Board of Deacons. Through you, we
are honored to share blessings and God's love to our church and community.
Respectfully submitted,
Shirley Headley, 2017 Deacon President

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION COMMITTEE 2017
Committee Members: Ginny Bertram (Children’s Sunday School), Holly Finnarn (Sunday
School Superintendent), Tina Smith, Nikki Gilmore (Youth Director), Marnelise van der Walt
(LOGOS Director), Patti Jetter and Pastor John (Ex Officio).
Adult Sunday School: There were two adult Sunday School classes at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday
morning. Those classes are the Encouragers Class led by Don Boyer in the parlor and the
Seekers Class in the Library. The members of Seekers take turns leading this class with Randy
Tester leading presently. Pastor John also leads a small men’s group on Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m. at
Bob Evans and the Wednesday Bible Study at 10:30 a.m.
Pre-school and Elementary Sunday School: The elementary grades have been using “One
Room Sunday School” curriculum to learn simple, influential biblical lessons. The class is
taught by Holly Finnarn. This curriculum attempts to teach the stories of the Bible with a wide
range of materials that target the reader and the non-reader alike. We have found that it is much
easier and much more fun to have all the grades together because we have more children
available to participate in the games and crafts associated with each story.
The preschool is using a David C. Cook series and the lesson is given during the worship hour.
This curriculum has colorful pages geared to the pre-schoolers abilities and has a take-home
sheet to inform the parents about the lesson. Ginny Bertram teaches this class and is assisted by
Marnelise van der Walt who is “on call” in the nursery area. There is also a classroom (next to
the preschool room) for those children who rather attend Sunday School than sit in the sanctuary
during the worship hour.
Respectfully submitted,
Ginny Bertram
LOGOS: Our free Wednesday night children’s program for kids age 2 through 5th
grade starts
in September and runs through April. This free community outreach every Wednesday from
5:00 – 7:00 p.m. is currently attended by about 15 kids. Some of the kids attending the program
are from the community and have other home churches. The kids have fun with music, games,
sound biblical teaching and a family meal. The children learn to experience God through
learning about Jesus and the Bible, to have better relationships with others, and to praise and
worship God. “Believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1.
Currently, LOGOS is being coordinated with the help of a group of wonderful volunteers.
Volunteers and LOGOS parents are involved in the following ways: teachers, teacher assistants,
music/worship skills, crafts and recreation, table parents, kitchen help, table set-up help,
decorating help, dinner dean and LOGOS store help.
VBS: This year we tried our VBS in the middle of the week at a different location than our
Church. On Wednesday, July 17, twenty kids followed Jesus on a life-changing adventure
during our Son Quest Rainforest VBS at J&J Enterprises outside of Greenville. Most of the kids
attending were not from our church family. We spent the day teaching the kids of God's

unfailing love. We learned that God cares about us and has a plan for us. The kids made cook
crafts, sang fun songs, played games and made lots of friends! We ended the wonderful fun day
swimming in the pond on the property.
A BIG THANK YOU!, to our volunteers who spent endless hours preparing to make the day
extra special for the children. Special thanks to our college students who volunteered. Everyone
worked together to make Vacation Bible School a success. Many thanks to all the people who
prayed for VBS; may God bless you all!

Junior & Senior High Youth Programs: Small but mighty would be a great description of the
youth group we had here at First Presbyterian Church in 2017. What we have lacked in
numbers, we made up for in heart and depth in our lessons. Smaller groups led to deeper, more
meaningful discussions with one another. The group this year, was one of the most close-knit
groups I have ever had the pleasure of leading.
Some of the highlights of this past year included:
† Wednesday night youth group for both junior and senior high.
† The youth were in charge of planning and leading the Easter sunrise service and preparing the
breakfast that followed.
† We had a Confirmation class of 6 extremely dedicated students. They went through months of
classes, projects, and tests. And they all passed with flying colors! I was incredibly proud of
their hard work and dedication. And I know I speak for all of us when I say we couldn't be
happier to have them as members of our church.
† Then in May, we had our Senior send-off for one high school graduate and multiple college
students. This service is always a special one. It’s a chance we, as a congregation, get to
acknowledge and celebrate all the graduate’s accomplishments and pray for God’s guidance in
their futures.
† This year we tried something new with our summer programming. We combined the high
school and college groups to bridge the gap and extend the relationships outside of their typical
groups. This new programming was met with positive responses and new friendships.
Multiple summer events in this new programming included shuffle-board, putt-putt golf, going
to the arcade and other activities at the church.
† The youth also were involved and participated in Sunday morning worship.
† They prepared multiple lunches following Sunday services.
† And, as in previous years, the youth also participated in the Christmas Eve Service.

First Presbyterian Church - 13 - 2017
All in all, it was an eventful year for the First Presbyterian youth groups; a year that wouldn’t be
possible without countless volunteers and support from the congregation. Without them, this
ministry just wouldn’t be possible.
So in saying that, I would like to thank some of those selfless individuals.
First off, I would like to thank George and Becky Luce. They are volunteers I can always count
on and have helped me in numerous ways over the years. They have also led Sunday School for
well over a decade and supplied donuts every single week for those classes. The youth and I look
forward to donuts each week.
Then I would like to thank Patti Jetter and Susie Leland for stepping up and helping out while I
was on maternity leave. It gave me a great deal of peace knowing I left the youth in wonderful,
very capable hands. I couldn't begin to thank all the parents who have given their time and
resources, you not only trusted me with your kids but were kind enough to help me out along the
way.
Then, of course, the youth wouldn’t be where they are without the congregation and all their
prayers and support. The youth at First Presbyterian are a unique, with endless potential, a
strong faith, and assurance in God – a group that will do great things in the years to come.
Yours in Christ,
Nikki Gilmore

PARISH LIFE COMMITTEE 2016
The Parish Life Committee has been busy during the past year overseeing events that help to
create fellowship among the members of the congregation. The entire congregation helps to
make this committee function well by being willing to share their cooking expertise with
everyone who participates in our “food events.”
Coffee Hour has provided great fellowship for those who stay after the Sunday morning worship
every Sunday. The Deacons and the Session are responsible for hosting Coffee Hour on the 2nd
and 3rd
Sundays respectively each month. Other Sundays are open to the congregation. Again
thanks to Dan Hawley for making coffee each week.

Marnelise van der Walt has been gracious enough again for heading up Caring Cooks. This
group provides meals for the members of the church who have had medical procedures or other
emergencies. Special thanks to those that are willing to provide meals for our friends in the
congregation.
Other dinners served this past year by Parish Life Committee were the Officer Appreciation
Dinner, Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday dinners, Confirmation dinner, lunch before the
Dayton Dragon’s game, Chenoweth Trail meals and Nikki Gilmore’s Appreciation dinner. None
of these were possible without members of the congregation participating in the “carry-in style”
dinners.
Funeral dinners are also served by members of the church who provide both food and kitchen
help after the funeral service. I believe there were six funeral dinners prepared this past year.
Huge thanks to members of the committee who help make all of the events go smoothly.
Members are Tina Smith, Linda Stoltz, Sharon McGreevey, and Jane Flowers. Thank you also
to the many people in our church that are willing to give donations or help anytime they are
asked to assist.

Helen Miller

Eikenberry cost $525.86
Less 1 turkey roll (Boyer) ($37.69)
Cost of Meals Net $488.17
Contributions by diners ($272.00)
Cost of Meals Net $216.17
Meals Served 160
Cost per meal served $1.35
Unexpected supply and cost this year:
All previous years meal turkey rolls were 8 lb. This year we were unaware that Eikenberry’s had
changed to 12 lb turkey rolls. Greater cost but great food supply, resulting in the extra turkey
rolls (2) which went to Grace Mission (Grace Resurrection Community Center).

MUSIC AND WORSHIP COMMITTEE 2017
Members: Darrell Fryman (Chairperson), Bruce Stoltz (Co-Chair), Helen Miller, & Polly Klein
This committee is responsible for preparing and serving communion to members and guests of
our church each month. Communion was typically served on the first Sunday of each month, on
Ash Wednesday and on Maundy Thursday. This year, we also served Communion during the
morning worship service on Christmas Eve. Thanks to all who volunteered to prepare
communion before each service and who cleaned up after each service. Special thanks also to
past and present Session members who volunteered to help serve during each service.
This committee is also responsible for decorating the church for Easter and Christmas. Thanks
to all those who purchased lilies for Easter and poinsettias for Christmas. Thanks also to those
who volunteered their time to set up and take down the decorations for each holiday.
Huge thanks to Marilyn Light, Doug Klinsing, Terri Fryman, Darrell Fryman, Don Lockhart,
Jane Tester, Brad Hare, Alex Vehre and all of the choir members for the choral music they
provide either by directing or performing. Your time, effort, and dedication help provide a
meaningful worship experience for our congregation. We also want to thank all those who
performed Special Music throughout the year.
It is our desire that each member and guest will feel a sense of warmth and comfort while
attending First Presbyterian Church’s services and worshipping our Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.

2017 PROPERTY AND MAINTENANCE
As a church, we have been blessed with a truly beautiful facility. That being said, there is a
constant to-do list to keep it in shape. In all that is done, the economics of any repair or
renovation factors into our decisions. It is always a challenge to stay within budgetary
constraints.
Several initiatives this year were supported via donations. This generosity has benefitted all of
us.
Listed below are the highlights from 2017:
† Switched electric provider saving up to $200.00 per month.
† Donations provided paint for youth basement, youth provided labor.
† Installed handicap entrance auto-opener system. Cost covered by donation.
† Front door was refinished and sealed.
† Added first-aid kits and signage.
† Staff trained in CPR, first-aid and use of AED device.
† Upstairs rooms cleaned and old furniture disposed of.
† All yearly safety system inspections were successfully completed. These include boiler, water
backflow, sprinklers, alarm systems, fire department and fire extinguishers.
† Quarterly all 41 exit and emergency signs had batteries checked and replaced as needed.
† Outside work:
† 4th
Street external wall brick was tuck pointed and sealed.
† Parking lot lighting added (LEDs).
† 4th
Street lamp post was repaired. LED lights installed.
† Outside of north block wall sealed and caulked. Ditto for gutters in that area.
† Inside work:
† New ballasts for fluorescent lights installed.
† Updated narthex and office lighting with LEDs.
† Renovated Men's restroom – came in under budget.
† Spruced up social hall and north wall of the area – came in under budget.
† Added additional security cameras to our security/alarm system.
Please pass along thanks to Donn Thornhill for his dedication to keeping us worshipping in a
beautiful, safe and secure facility. Also thanks to Dan Hawley for his assistance in these
endeavors. We are able to celebrate our Lord in this wonderful building because of these efforts.
Importantly, thanks to all those individuals who, by their donations, blessed us all.

MISSION COMMITTEE 2017 REPORT
The 2017 Mission Committee Members: Hendrik van der Walt (Chair), Lisa Headley, Karen
Henninger, Dick Nord, and Beverly Shively. Ex-Officio members are Nikki Gilmore and Pastor
John Person.
In 2017, the Mission Committee hosted several activities and were recipients of God's grace as
listed below:
Continue our financial support to local institutions by means of small donations to the National
Honor Society and the local Fire department.
In August, our church joined up with the First Methodist Church and the Greenville Church of
the Brethren to participate in the WaterStep shoe drive. Donated shoes will be repaired and sold
in third World countries; monies in return help much needed water purification projects. Our
church ended up donating 350 lbs. of shows! Thanks to everyone.
With all the natural disasters that parts of the country endured, the committee decided to support
The Church Without Walls in Puerto Rico. Donations were made towards the purchase of a
satellite phone and bag showers to help our fellow Christians to recovery. We continue to
support, where we can, cross cultural workers with missions overseas, including Tim Holcomb,
Nick Castelluccio and others.
With the help of many talented and giving members of our congregation, we supported the
CROP walk and the Community Thanksgiving Dinner.
We closed the year with a big thank you to all who contributed and supported the Craft and Bake
sale that was held over 3 Sundays in December. With the proceeds, we are able to further support
local charities like FISH, Youth for Christ, and Big Brother's Big Sisters.
God has blessed this church with many talented individuals!

benefits to the session based on available church finances. It also communicates any issues to
the session before taking any personnel action. It was with great regret that the Committee
accepted the resignation of Youth Director, Nikki Gilmore. The Committee organized the
celebration of ministry dinner for Nikki and continues to be involved looking for a replacement.

MEDIA COMMITTEE REPORT 2017
This ministry is kind of a behind the scenes ministry but an essential part of each church service
and for our television ministry. Each service is live and is recorded for a later television
broadcast. This requires a Director, Sound Board Operator, and Two Camera operators.
† The Directors are Dan Hawley, Chris Mumaw, Mark Jefferis and Molly Mumaw. The director
sets up the computer for recording the service, and during the service, he talks to each camera
operator for camera position, pan and shot angle – and decides which shot will become part of
the recording. The director can also add text to the recording, and do a split screen so words of
songs can be seen while also having the choir or congregation in the shot. The director is the
most complex position for the media team and requires the most training.
† Soundboard operators are Chris Mumaw, Dan Hawley, and Barry Hounshell. The soundboard
operators control sound levels for all of the microphones used during the service. There are also
three mics for the Praise Team, both lecterns, the overhead choir mic and the floor mics, and
Pastor John’s lapel mic. They watch and prepare to turn a microphone on when someone
approaches to speak. They also adjust the mics on the piano and keyboard for a good mix.
The sound operators also do music CD & tape playback and operate the computer if a video or
Youtube video is to be shared. This position requires a little training….but is not that hard to
learn.
† Camera Operators currently are John Lockhart, Glenn Mitchell, Matt Hounshell, Craig Leland,
Mike McKinney, Donn Thornhill, Steve Headley and Jayden Mumaw. Gene Henninger and
Molly Mumaw are subs. Two camera operators are needed per service.
Operating the camera is very easy and one can be taught in just a few minutes.
Thanks to all of those that support this ministry and to those of you that have served in the past.
Overall the past several years, we have had a decrease in the number of sound operators and
camera operators. Any consideration given to help with this ministry would be appreciated.
Now that you know a little more about what this team does and what is required if you are ever
interested in serving just let someone on the team know.

2018 STEPHEN MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORT
Stephen Ministry is a lay caring ministry between a trained Stephen Minister and a member of
the congregation who has vocalized need of some kind. These caring Stephen Ministers stand
ready to help in a short-term or long-term situation.
Currently, our Stephen Ministers include Don Boyer, Dale Dickerson, Nikki Gilmore, Nancy
Jackson, Helen Miller, Beverly Shively, Linda Stoltz and Pastor John. Together we meet
monthly to go through continuing education, pray, plan special projects and discuss ways by
which we can help the congregation and community.
This past year we sent care packages to people in need, wrote letters and sent cards to those with
special concerns, organized a Valentine party at one of the local nursing homes, and made
regular phone calls and regular visits to care receivers.
Anyone who might benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister should contact the church office
or speak to Pastor John directly.
Respectfully submitted,
Pastor John, Stephen Ministry Leader
PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN/TUESDAY GALS 2017
Sandra Brawley was assisted by Linda Stoltz in planning our meetings and activities. Tuesday
Gals met 7 months in 2017 as follows:
Feb. – Valentine’s Day lunch and planting – hosted by Gina Fryman.
Mar – Troy-Hayner Cultural Center was built originally as the home of Mary Jane Harter
Coleman Hayner, which is magnificent in vintage décor and history. The day we visited
we viewed the artwork of local Troy school students.
April – Kitchen Aid demo of apple dumplings and lunch at the Coffee Pot then returning to
Kitchen Aid to eat our dessert with ice cream.
![Page 22: FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - Clover Sitesstorage.cloversites.com/firstpresbyterianchurch8...February 7, 2017 1. First Presbyterian Church - 22 - 2017
May – the gals engaged in a tour of Mrs. Wick's Pie facility in Winchester, IN. The tour was
very interesting plus informative as to its history and present production to 30 states.
Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch in their restaurant and ended the visit bringing home
samples of their delicious pies and sweets. They even produce "glucose free" pie crusts!
June – A visit to a nursery in New Carlisle was planned but those changed as a small tornado had
destroyed several businesses in town, so we enjoyed lunch in Tipp City.
Aug – Picnic at the Greenville Park.
After the get-together with low attendance, it was decided to disband until more interest is shown
on the part of the women of First Presbyterian Church. Hopefully, the group will resume
enjoying Christian fellowship, fun, and laughter.
During 2017, Sandra Brawley also took over the financial aspects of our Presbyterian Women’s
Association (Tuesday Gals) as follows:
Beginning balance: $2308.38
Credits: $20.00 (dishcloths)
Debits: $35.00 (Park shelter for picnic)
$106.75 (24 boxes of all-occasional notes ordered for Karen Henninger
who writes 24 – 30 notes monthly to members of our church and others
known with concerns. Karen’s commitment is celebrated!!
Ending Balance: $2,294.45
Soon it will be decided if some of our monies could be used to assist in furthering issues and
activities of the church or elsewhere in the community.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandra Brawley & Linda Stoltz

First Presbyterian Church - 23 - 2017
VISION TEAM REPORT
Throughout 2017, our Vision Team has been working diligently to put together a 3-5 year
strategic plan for our church. Members of the team include Pastor John, Don Lockhart, Lauren
Henry and Jane Tester.
One of the principles that have led our group comes from the EPC, “Ready, Fire, Aim!” What
that means is this: we have been initiating new programs and ideas on a periodic basis in order
to see how they impact the overall ministry of the church. After they are put in place, we take
time to evaluate them to see if those programs have merit and should continue.
One of those programmatic ideas has to do with the current experiment we are going through by
changing around our Sunday morning schedule in the attempt to increase Sunday school
attendance and maintain a consistent worship time throughout the year. As you have noticed,
worship now begins at 10:00 a.m. with fellowship time to follow and Sunday school for all ages
at 11:15 a.m. This experiment will last through the end of March when we will pause and
evaluate the effectiveness of this change. Your input will be very important.
We also initiated a Fall Outreach Concert which included Greg & Rebecca Sparks from
Pittsburgh, PA. The funding for this program came from Lilly Endowment, along with our
summer congregational retreat which focused on personal, emotional and spiritual healing. Both
of these events were well received and valuable.
During the fall of 2017, Pastor John initiated a Vision Team idea of a “Talk Back” time
following his message during the worship service. In addition, we began a program of securing
our building during the worship hour for the safety of the congregation in light of many church
catastrophes this year nationwide. Volunteers are always needed, but the church has responded
positively to this move. Pastor John has also opened the worship service in a less formal but
more inviting way, which seems to have created a warmer atmosphere. All of these are ideas
which have stemmed from our Vision Team this year.
This year the team also came up with a series of guiding principles which they will present to the
congregation in 2018 with a grouping of programmatic ideas which are geared to encourage
growth and renewal in the congregation which stem from these principles. Their initials begin
with “G, B, S.” But we’ll tell you later what they mean.
The Vision Team is always open to new ideas. Please feel free to talk with one of the team. Our
approach is “Ready, Fire, Aim!” All ideas are welcome.
Envisioning a bright future,
Pastor John and the entire Vision Team
