Closing Doors: Can the Mainline Churches Learn Something from Sears?

The long slow demise of an iconic brand and company like Sears is painful to watch. The once dominant position it held because of its catalogue sales and superior products is no more. The rural catalogue customer now typical-ly has access to an automobile and the shop-ping mall. More and more, Sears has had to deal with its customers face to face.

From my perspective as a Sears shopper, I can see this has not been an easy transition. I have always liked Sears appliances, but each time I have gone into their store to buy a prod-uct it has been a horrible experience. I have found the store clerks rude and condescend-ing— whether in clothing or in the appliance de-partment. Our most recent frustration was when the Wichita Sears delivered our new washing machine to our old address in Lincoln, Nebras-ka. Predictably this was not an easy fix and we vented “Never again” as we stuffed fourteen washers at the laundromat with several weeks of accumulated laundry while waiting for the re-placement.

As I think about Sears and its failure to evolve to the ever-changing needs of the market place, I can’t help but wonder if there is not a parallel in the long slow demise of the PC(USA)? We, too, have been slow to evolve to the ever- changing needs of those who come to worship. We can be complacent like Sears in thinking, “Because we have a superior product people will come around to the truth of what we offer.” We can be blind to the newcomer in our midst. We can ignore them or overwhelm them. Presby-tery has attempted merging two dying churches thinking it makes for a stronger church, much like Sears consolidating two stores, but as Sears

has found out... unless you get the culture right it doesn't work.

The seven last words of the church, “We have never done it that way!” have contributed to a culture that is unresponsive to the Holy Spirit and, I would say, to the spirit of innova-tion. I am encouraged by the PCUSA's initiative of 1001 new worshipping congregations by 2020 as an example of the Holy Spirit and the spirit of innovation at work in our calling to put new wine into new wineskins as followers of Je-sus Christ.

So as we move into a new year filled with promise, let us be willing to innovate in how we introduce visitors to the good news of Jesus Christ and First Church. I am encouraged by the renovations of the DeVore Room which should be complete sometime in January. When these renovations are completed, a ministry called “The Well” will be launched to deepen our rela-tionships and to have our thirst quenched in Je-sus Christ. We will need a ministry team to be formed that will oversee the operations of the Coffeehouse/Welcome Center to make sure we are succeeding in providing a hospitable envi-ronment to our guests. So if you would like to volunteer to be part of this hospitality team, please see me or Pastor Amy or Joanna Ediger.

“Behold, I am doing a new thing. Do you not perceive it?” is a quote from Isaiah 43:19 that gave promise to those in exile and gives us hope as well. Indeed, our future is bright as long as we discern how God is at work in the world to join God in his work. So, I invite you to PRAY that we will continue to put new wine into new wineskins… that we will find new ways to intro-duce people to Jesus Christ… and that once in-troduced to Jesus Christ… visitors and mem-bers will be discipled in the way of Jesus Christ. I see no reason why this church should go the way of Sears. We can choose to go the way of Jesus Christ. Let us do so in 2015. Amen.

Thank You

Thank you to the many vol-unteers who helped and donat-ed for our annual Christmas Boxes through Interfaith’s Op-eration Holiday. The recipients greatly appreciated the food bags, knitted hats, socks, cook-ies and holiday music.

Thank you to everyone who

has participated in the EDR Dis-plays from June 2007 through December 2014… eighty-nine displays in all. God has guided throughout, resulting in bless-ings to both the presenters and to those who viewed the variety of displays.

In appreciation, Lilly-Ann Huffman

To the members of First

Church, Wichita: On behalf of my family, I

want to thank you for your care and concern during the days following Carina's death. From the letters, emails, phone calls and personal visits to your at-tendance and support during and after her Celebration of Life Worship Service, you have held us in your hearts. And for this we will always be grateful.

May God Bless you, each and every one,

Phil Michel

Scripture: Matthew 2:13–23 When a family was travel-

ing through Ohio on the way to Grandma's house, they ar-rived in Columbus just as a tornado warning was issued. Suddenly everything changed as they feared that their chil-dren might be in danger.

This incident helps us im-agine what it was like for Jo-seph's family as he, Mary, and their young child traveled to Egypt. Herod, not a tornado, threatened them as he sought to kill their little boy. Imagine how frightening it was for them, knowing that “Herod (sought) the young Child to destroy Him” (Matt. 2:13).

We usually take a more idyllic view of Christmastime— lowing cattle and kneeling shepherds in a peaceful sce-

ne. But there was no peace for Jesus' family as they sought to escape Herod's horror. Only when an angel told them it was safe did the family go out of Egypt and back home to Nazareth (vv. 20–23).

Consider the awe we should feel for the incarnation. Jesus, who enjoyed the majes-ty of heaven in partnership with God, set it all aside to be born in poverty, to face many dangers, and to be crucified for us. Coming out of Egypt is one thing, but leaving heaven for us… that's the grand and amazing part of this story!!

Stewardship Devotion

GREEN TEAM BEING

FORMED

Christian Stewardship takes many forms. God gave all of us many different gifts. Being a good steward is deter-mining how we can best use all of those gifts to serve God. Here at FPC we feel that it is important to recognize both our financial and non-financial contributions to the life of the church. However, good stew-ardship does not stop there. As Christians we are also called to be stewards of the earth. This type of steward-ship refers to the responsible use and protection of the nat-ural environment through conservation and sustainable practices. Each of us has the power to make choices that reflect our faith commitments and be better caretakers of the precious natural re-sources that God provides. Oftentimes, however, we just don't know what these choic-es are or, if we do, how to in-corporate them into our par-ticular lives.

A ministry team is being formed to help our congrega-tion with these issues. The team will be identifying sim-ple, common, and sustainable practices and will educate our congregation as to how these practices might be integrated into their daily lives. Anyone with an interest is welcome to join us. Our first meeting will be held in the McComb Room

after the reg-ular worship service on S u n d a y , February 1.

This event will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 525 N. Broadway. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and

trivia will begin at 7:00 p.m. The cost is $120 for teams of eight people registered in advance (a discount),

Trivia categories can vary greatly. Throughout the evening, we’ll play other fun little games (i.e. 50/50 raf-

fle, Heads or Tails, attendance prizes, etc.), trying to raise as much money as possible to support Partners

for Wichita.

What is PARTNERS FOR WICHITA?

The mission of Partners for Wichita is to pursue peace and well-being in Wichita and beyond through

partnerships, by connecting individuals, faith communities, and community organizations to meet urgent

needs in the greater Wichita area. Partners for Wichita is especially known for “Filling the Gap Lunches for Kids,” providing nourishing lunches for 800 children and youth each day during critical times of

Spring Break and the end of summer vacation. We initiate the gathering of over 1,600 “Bags of Blessings”

Construction Update Construction is progressing on the DeVore

Room Renovation project, called The Well (Well-come Center). The new restrooms are being completed, the floors are nearly complete, ceiling tile is being installed, and walls are painted. Still to be completed are the kitchen cabinetry and some of the lighting. The project is running on budget at this time. The completion date is currently scheduled for mid-January, depending on availability of materials. We anticipate having an Open House on Tuesday, February 17, with Coffee Fellowship added to The Well in early February.

10 Secrets to Happiness By Pope Francis

The beloved Pope Francis listed in a recent interview, his Top 10 tips for bringing greater joy to one’s life. As we begin a New Year, may we incorporate these guiding principles to experience true inner happiness and peace in our lives. 1. “Live and Let Live.” Too many of us jeopardize our happiness

by trying to control others. Do not become fixated on what others are doing and lose sight of what God is asking us to do.

2. “Be Giving of Yourselves to Others.” Being open and generous with others brings us into an intimate encounter with Jesus Christ, who is the source of all joy. Pope Francis warns that “if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming ego-centric. And stagnant water becomes putrid.”

3. “Proceed Calmly.” Happiness is jeopardized when we live hec-tic and out-of-control lives. Pope Francis uses the image of a quiet pool of water and urges us “to move with kindness and humility, calmness in life.” He wants us to understand that to maintain calmness we must establish a deep spiritual life, cen-tered on God.

4. “Develop a Healthy Sense of Leisure.” The pleasures of art, literature, playing with children, and spending time with families give our bodies and minds a chance to refresh and renew, and also helps us to reconnect with each other.

5. “Make Sunday a Holy Day.” Pope Francis suggests that to find happiness one must reclaim Sun-day as a holy day and a family day. Make Sunday holy by worshipping God, spending time with your family, and building some quiet time in the day. This holy day offers us the opportunity to reflect on the spiritual side of our existence, appreciate blessings, and discover true happiness.

6. “Create Jobs for Young People.” Pope Francis says that “we need to be creative with young peo-ple in order to prevent them from slipping into drugs and despair. When we find ways to raise them up, we will discover in them and in ourselves, a deeper sense of happiness.”

7. “Respect and Take Care of Nature.” Our personal campaign to protect, respect, and care for na-ture, brings happiness because we know that these important steps help preserve God’s crea-tions.

8. “Stop Being Negative.” Pope Francis explains that constant complaining, gossiping, and criticizing are like poisons that kill happiness. “Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy” and it leads to a more positive outlook on life.

9. “Respect Others’ Beliefs.” We all have family members and friends who do not share our same religious denominational beliefs. Pope Francis explains, “We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating.” When we live as authentic witnesses of Jesus Christ, others are attracted to the inner joy and peace that we emanate. Whether or not they come to share in our beliefs, treating them with respect creates a bond of happiness between us.

10. “Work for Peace.” “The call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet; peace is always proactive,” says Pope Francis. He asks that we all pray for peace and work for peace in our homes, neighborhoods, schools and places of employment.

Session Notes Items from the Session

meeting of December 16, 2014:

The Session approved Stew-ardship’s request to allow the group “Partner for Wichi-ta” to promote the “Trivia Night Fundraiser” in the life of our church.

Finance reported that the Foundation covers cost of the building. The congrega-tional giving does NOT cover staff salaries & program costs. We cannot continue in this deficit situation. If we do, we will have to cut staff and/or program.

The Session approved a $155,938.35 budget for 2015.

The Session charged the 2014 Nominating Committee with two tasks to complete as soon as possible. They need find a member willing and able to complete Carina Michel’s term as an elder and chair of Worship and Music and they need to find four members to serve on the 2015 Nominating Com-mittee. The Session mem-bers of the 2015 Nominating Committee are Roger Lyon and Brian Howard. The dea-con member of the 2015 Nominating Committee is Alice Price. The members secured by the Nominating Committee will be presented to the congregation at the

Annual Congregational Meet-ing on January 25, 2015 (immediately following the 10:30 worship service).

The Camp Committee shared the survey that they will be sending to all mem-bers in January of 2015.
