MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE

Communion Sunday, May 7, 2017, 10:00 a.m.

First Communion Sunday

ORGAN PRELUDE: “The Good Shepherd”

Dale Wood (1934-2003)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*[Please stand for the lighting of the candles]

CALL TO WORSHIP

This is the day that God has made.

Let us rejoice and be glad!

*HYMN: “Let There Be Peace on Earth” [insert]

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

Almighty God, We have gone our own ways and

strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have not done thing we should do,

and we have done the things we should not have.

We are sorry. We want to begin again.

Forgive our foolish ways and

create for us new hearts and purer souls,

that we may reflect your presence and love

for this broken world and for those we love. Amen.

*THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is

now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

SCRIPTURE READING: John 10:1-10

ANTHEM: “Good Shepherd” Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947)

The King of Love my Shepherd is whose goodness fails me never.

I nothing lack, since I am His, and He is mine forever.

God before me. God beside me. God behind me. God above me.

Where streams of living waters flow, my troubled soul is healing.

And quietly the pastures grow the voice of God revealing,

God before me. God beside me. God behind me. God above me.

In darkest hours I fear no ill, with my dear Lord beside me.

Your strength and mercy comfort still, your hand is there to guide me.

God before me. God beside me. God behind me. God above me.

And so through all the length of days we never shall grow apart.

Good Shepherd, I will sing your praise for living in my heart.

God before me. God beside me. God behind me. God above me.

God with in me. O King of Love! O Prince of Peace! O Child of Hope!

Good Shepherd I will sing your praise for living in my heart.

MORNING PRAYER

CONGREGATION’S JOYS AND CONCERNS

May God be with you.

And also with you.

May God cleanse the thoughts of our hearts,

by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit,

that we may more perfectly love,

and be worthy of God’s Holy Name. Amen.

Let us pray silently …

MY STORY The First Communion Class

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

OFFERTORY ANTHEM: “Greater love hath no man”

John Ireland (1879-1962)

Rebecca Shrimpton and Paul Knox, soloists

Page 4: FIRST PARISH CHURCH, CONGREGATIONAL · illness and loss. If you would like to become involved with this wonderful team contact; Sheila Kafer 978-525-3253, smkafer@comcast.net Janet

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. (Song of Solomon 8:7)

Love is strong as death. (Song of Solomon 8:6)

Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

Who His own self bore our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sin,

should live unto righteousness. (1 Peter 2:24)

Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus.

(1 Corinthians 6:11)

Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, that ye should show forth the

praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)

I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies, a living sacrifice,

holy and acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (Romans 12:1)

*DOXOLOGY: Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below, Praise God

above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*HYMN: “Spirit of the Living God” NCH #283 (2X)

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

“Let all who are moved by the love and concern of Jesus Christ, fell free

to approach His table and participate in His meal.”

“When Jesus, our Risen Savior, was walking the

Road to Emmaus with two of the disciples,

They asked him to join them in a meal.

He took the bread and broke it,

and gave it to them.

Instantly their eyes were open to who he was - -

they recognized they were eating with Jesus

because they shared that bread.

We pray that we may recognize and

be with Jesus Christ this morning

as we break bread together.”

COMMUNION MEDITATION “Sheep, Sheep, Everywhere”

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

“On the night he was betrayed …”

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

“Almighty God, we give thanks for Jesus’ presence

in the simplicity and splendor of this holy meal.

Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another,

and send us into the world by your Holy Spirit,

so that we may have courage and true peace.”

NOTES ON TODAY’S ANTHEM:

“Good Shepherd” was composed for William and Curt Sorensen,

brothers and tenor soloists with the choir of the First Congregational

Church of North Guilford, CT. Bill Sorensen raises sheep. Thus, the

topic of the “Good Shepherd” seemed most appropriate.

This anthem is based on the traditional hymn, “The King of Love My

Shepherd Is”, “with music and lyrics adapted by the composer.

Interspersed with the preexisting material are short phrases, musical

settings of lines from the Saint Patrick breastplate: God before me. God

beside me. God behind me. God above me.

The intent in combining these sources is to speak of God's presence

guiding (as a “Good Shepherd”), surrounding (as in the St. Patrick

lines), infusing the spirit (living in my heart) and even manifested in our

beloved livestock. Program notes by composer.

ways as officers or on committees. Are you interested in learning more

about the committees that serve First Parish? Would you like to serve on

a committee? Contact the Nominating Committee- Martha Gubbins,

Penny Lapham, Mary Lumsden, Jen Powers and Marianne Round.

We continue with a new selection for April; "Hillbilly

Elegy" by J. D. Vance. The Vance family story begins

hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were

"dirt poor and in love" and moved north from Kentucky's

Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty

around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their

grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a

conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward

mobility.…Amazon. We will meet on Monday, May 8 at Marianne

Round's home at 7 PM.

“For where 2 or 3 are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst

of them”. Matthew 18:20

All are welcome to gather in the parlor of First Parish

Church on the first and third Thursday of each month, next

gatherings May 18. We will start promptly at 6:00 PM and end at 7:00

PM. We will be praying in one accord, a form of conversational prayer.

Bring your concerns to the Lord whether they are for Yourself, Family,

Friends, our Country, the World! You may pray along silently or pray

aloud.

SAVE THE DATE! Celebration of Rev. John Hughes’

retirement following the June 11th Tuck’s Point service.
