About Jr. FIRST LEGO League
The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program.
They are among the fundamental elements that disnguish FLL
from other programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values,
parcipants learn that friendly compeon and mutual gain are
not separate goals, and that helping one
another is the foundaon of teamwork.
• We are a team.
• We do the work to nd soluons with guidance from
our coaches and mentors.• We honor the spirit of friendly compeon.
• What we discover is more important than what we win.
• We share our experiences with others.
• We display Gracious Professionalism in everything we
do.
• We have fun.
Jr. FIRST LEGO League in New York City
For the past seven years, the New York City FIRST Planning
Commiee has hosted a Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) Expo.
As the program has expanded, the commiee has
decided to bring all of our regional programs together at theJacob Javits Convenon Center for this year ’s 2012 FIRST MEGA
Celebraon. Children ages 6-9 are presented with the Jr. FLL
“Snack Aack” Challenge and are required to put together a
“Show Me” poster board presentaon which showcases their
research and demonstrates their understanding of the theme.
Parcipang teams also create a model which demonstrates
their innovave soluon to the challenge theme of Snack Aack.
The Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo is non-compeve.
Parcipaon in the event serves as an introducon to FIRST
programs for children. All parcipants and teams receive
recognion and awards are presented to everyone! The Expo is
designed to bring teams together from all ve boroughs of New
York City. Teams interact with one another to showcase theirprojects and spectators interact with individual teams to ask
quesons and allow teams to demonstrate their understanding
of the “Snack Aack” theme.
At the 2012 FIRST MEGA Celebraon at the Jacob Javits Conven-
on Center, Junior FIRST LEGO League Teams will parcipate in
the opening ceremonies with FIRST LEGO League teams. They
will also have the opportunity to observe and learn more about
how FIRST LEGO League and the FIRST Robocs Compeon
work as they witness robot performance events throughout the
course of the day. The New York City/New Jersey FIRST Planning
Commiee hopes to encourage future growth of all FIRST
programs in our region by providing children with the
opportunity to progress from Junior FIRST LEGO League to FIRSTLEGO League as they become eligible (ages 9-14).

The Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) Challenge, Snack Aack, shares the same
real-world topic as the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge. It is open-ended,designed for younger kids, and can be customized to every ability level.
The challenge is divided in two parts – the Show-Me Poster and the Model. TheShow-Me Poster requires kids to illustrate their research and team journey. Itprovides an opportunity for them to share what they studied, learned, and howthey thought to improve the problem they chose. Their creave minds get startedworking on how to present their informaon and soluon.
The Model component of the challenge allows kids to learn hands-on. Here theybuild a representaon of the research they are conducng (according to theChallenge requirements), incorporang simple machines and movement into theircreaon. In their Model teams are able to use a motor to power movement, orthey can move elements of their Model by hand.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of all the NYC FIRST LEGO League teams who have taken onthe Food Factor Challenge during the 2011-2012 compeon season.
This year, over 150 teams from around NYC registered to take on the challenge of exploring food contaminaon. This year’s challenge reallygave students something to think about; how their food makes it to their table and how to maintain a safe and clean kitchen environment.
There were qualifying events held in all ve boroughs, where 82 teams emerged to compete in today’s Championship tournament.
We will also be hosng 17 Jr. FIRST LEGO League teams who are having their “Snack Aack” Exposion where they will approach the topic of food safety by exploring how proper preparaon and storage can keep us healthy.
The 2011-2012 seasons’ game has been announced and teams are beginning to prepare for the challenge ahead. We at New York City FIRSTare connuing our goals to strengthen our partnerships with schools, colleges and universies throughout the boroughs in order to bring theprogram to as many New York City students as possible.
On behalf of the commiee I would like to thank all of the teachers, coaches, parents, mentors, administrators and NYC FIRST LEGO Leaguesponsors and supporters for their dedicaon and support.
I would like to personally thank all of the members of the NYC FIRST LEGO League Planning Commiee for their connued support andcountless hours of hard work to make the Food Factor season such a triumph.
Sincerely,
Susan HermonChair FLL Planning CommieeAdministrator, NYU-Poly Center for K-12 STEM Educaon

Food Factor is a three-part robocs challenge that consists of a proj-
ect, the robot game and core values.
The FLL Core Values are the cornerstones of the FLL program. Theyare among the fundamental elements that disnguish FLL from other
programs of its kind. By embracing the Core Values, parcipants learn
that friendly compeon and mutual gain are not separate goals, and
that helping one another is the foundaon of teamwork.
The project requires research, where teams explore an actual prob-
lem that today’s sciensts and engineers are trying to solve, develop
and think of an innovave soluon to that problem and share their
ndings. In this year’s theme “Food Factor” teams will explore the
journey of food; how it gets to your table and innovave soluons on
how to keep contaminaon and spoiling from happening.
For the Food Factor Robot Game, the robot’s job is to put some com-
mon foods through just a few of the steps they go through in order to
get into one’s belly, while either avoiding or dealing with contamina-
on. From harvesng corn, polluon reversal, refrigerated ground
transport, and pest removal; teams have to build and program an
autonomous robot to score points in 2.5 minute matches on the
themed playing eld/obstacle course.

FIRST Tech Challenge Inspire Award This is the most presgious award an FTC Team could re-
ceive. This formally judged award is given to the team that
truly embodied the “Challenge” of the FTC Program. The
team that receives this award is chosen by the Judges as hav-
ing best represented a “Role Model” FIRST Tech Challenge
team. This team is a top contender for all the other judging
categories and is a strong competor on the eld. The Inspire
Award Winner is an inspiraon to other teams, acng with
Gracious Professionalism both on and o the playing eld.
This team understands how to communicate their experienc-
es and knowledge to other teams, sponsors and the judges. The Winner of this award will addionally receive an invita-
on to the FIRST World Championship Compeon.
Rockwell Collins Innovate Award The Rockwell Collins Innovate award celebrates a team that
not only thinks outside the box, but also has the ingenuity
and invenveness to make their designs come to life. This
judged award is given to the team that has the most innova-
ve and creave robot design soluon to any or all specic
eld elements or components in the FIRST Tech Challenge
game. Elements of this award include elegant design, ro-
bustness and “Out of the Box” thinking related to design.
This award may address the design of the whole robot or asub-assembly aached to the robot. The creave component
must work consistently, but the robot does not have to work
all the me during matches to be considered for this award.
The teams engineering notebook should be marked with
journal entries to show the design of the component(s) and
the team’s robot in order to be eligible for this award and
entries should describe succinctly how the team arrived at
that soluon.
PTC Design Award This award recognizes design elements of the robot that are
both funconal and aesthec. All successful robots have
innovave design aspects; however, the PTC Design Awardis presented to teams that incorporate industrial design
elements into their soluon. These design elements could
simplify the robots’ appearance by giving it a clean look, be
decorave in nature or otherwise express the creavity of
the team. The winning design should not compromise the
praccal operaon of the robot but complement its purpose.
This award is sponsored by Parametric Technology Corpora-
on (PTC), developers of the CAD tools, Creo and Mathcad.
PTC gives licenses to the FTC student teams for these so-
ware products to help them with their designs. Use of these
tools is not required to be eligible; however, teams that use
them are given extra consideraon for this award.
FIRST Tech Challenge THINK Award This judged award is given to the team that best reects the
“Journey” the team took as they experienced the engineer-
ing design process during the build season. The Engineering
Notebook is the key reference for judges to help idenfy
the most deserving team. The Engineering Notebook should
focus on the design and build stages of the teams’ robot.
Journal entries of interest to the judges for this ward will
include those describing the steps, brainstorms, designs, re-
designs, successes and those “interesng” moments when
things weren’t going as planned. A team will not be a candi-
date for this award if they have not completed the secon of
the engineering notebook describing the teams’ experience.
FIRST Tech Challenge Connect Award This judged award is given to the team that most connected
with their local community and the engineering community.
A true FIRST team is more than the sum of its parts and rec-
ognizes that their schools and communies play an essenal
part in their success. The recipient of this award is recognized
for helping the community understand FIRST, the FIRST Tech
Challenge and the team itself. The team that wins this awardis aggressively seeking engineers and exploring the oppor-
tunies available in the world of engineering, science and
technology. In addion, this team has a clear fundraising goal
and a plan to achieve that goal.
FIRST Tech Challenge Movate Award This judged award celebrates the team that exemplies the
essence of the FIRST Tech Challenge compeon through
team spirit and enthusiasm. They show their spirit through
costumes and fun ouits, a team cheer or outstanding spirit.
This team has made a collecve eort to make FIRST known
throughout their school and community.
FIRST Tech Challenge Promote Award The Promote award is given to the team that is most success-
ful in creang a compelling video message for the public de-
signed to change our culture and celebrate science, technol-
ogy, engineering and math. They are to submit a one minute
long (PSA) prior to the event to be eligible. The team must
present a thoughul and high-quality video which appeals
to the general public. Strong producon value is important,
but the message and the impact of the video are of greater
weight for the judging.
PSA Subject for the 2011-12 SeasonCreate a one-minute public service announcement (PSA)
video that begins with the following sentence: I’m going to
change the world…
FIRST Tech Challenge Compass Award A FIRST Tech Challenge team is about more that building
robots and compeng in tournaments – it is a journey to a
desnaon through trial and error, success and failure, with
challenging new technology and obstacles to navigate where
no road maps are provided. So how does a team nd their
way?
The Compass Award recognizes an adult coach or mentor
who has provided outstanding guidance and support for ateam throughout the year. The winner of the Compass Award
will be determined from candidates nominated by FTC Team
members, via a 40-60 second video submission highlighng
how their mentor/coach has helped them become a cham-
pion level team. The Judges want to hear what sets your
mentor apart.
