FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
"Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture." Jesus uses the image of a gate today to help us understand how we are to relate to Him. He is our path to "pasture," in other words, to the peace and prosperity that we long for. He shows us the way to find all that we need right there before us. Some people, however, may think that it's better to avoid the trouble of finding the gate and thus choose to enter another way instead. But Jesus says, "Whoever does not enter a sheepfold through the gate but climbs over elsewhere is a thief and a robber." Although this is all cast in the gentle terms of an analogy about sheep, the message is actually rather stern. Jesus is telling us that if we don't follow Him, we are taking the wrong course of action. He is not suggesting a kind of relativistic principle that says, "Following me is one of many good options." No. He is telling us that in order to "have life and have it more abundantly," we must follow the path that goes by way of Christ. This isn't always the easiest path to follow. It might mean taking the long way around a situation instead of a shortcut. It might mean waiting a little while to get to that pasture instead of hopping the fence and finding it on our own terms. Insisting on using the gate may also make us look like fools to those around us. But to be truly faithful followers of Jesus, we need to trust that His way is the best way. We need to trust that, by letting Him lead, we will ultimately end up in the best possible pasture. In our culture, it is becoming less and less popular to believe in one true religion, but as Christians we know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Mother’s Day
May is the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As the Mother of Jesus Christ, she is our mother too and we look to her for guidance as we look to our own mothers on earth. Next Sunday is Mother’s Day - a day set aside to honor our mothers in a very special way. In recognition of Mother’s Day, members of our Social Ministry committee will distribute a gift of remembrance.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
The Easter Season is a time of new life and renewed commitment to our Catholic faith. The phrase “Easter Sacrament” reminds us of the promise of the Risen Lord to be with us always, especially in the “breaking of the bread”. This weekend, our parish has the special honor of welcoming the extended families and friends of the thirty-two children who will celebrate their First Holy Communion. At these Masses, we introduce these young children to the Lord’s table for the first time. We welcome all our visitors as well as our regular parishioners to St. Mary Our Mother this weekend, and we extend to all a word of welcome! These First Communion children, the parents, and families have been preparing for this day for many months. By their faithful and regular participation at Sunday Mass, our parents have been teaching their children by their good example what it means to be fed at the Lord’s table when receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus. We congratulate our parents in their on-going efforts of what they promised when their children were baptized; in being the first and best teachers of their children in the ways of the Catholic faith. It is a wonderful moment in the life of every parish to witness our children coming forth to do what our Lord has instructed us in receiving the Eucharist. Those of us who receive Holy Communion often can forget Who we are receiving or take it for granted or allow it to become routine. Your fine example of participating at Mass and receiving the Eucharist regularly and reverently serves as a “teachable moment” not only for our First Communion children, but for the entire parish family. Parents and families have helped these children to understand what we believe about the Eucharist. Although the elements of bread and wine appear unchanged in the action of the Sacred Liturgy, through what we call “transubstantiation”, these elements become the very Body and Blood of Christ. As we witness these children receiving the Eucharist for the first time, today is a wonderful time for our entire parish to renew our commitment to the Risen Christ, and to assert our belief in the real presence of Christ in the Sacrament of the Eucharist. I know that you join our staff and me in welcoming all who will join us this First Communion weekend. I also want to acknowledge and thank Barbara Matterazzo, our Faith Formation Coordinator, for her dedication, enthusiasm, and wonderful leadership of the First Communion program; Angela Langendorfer, from the faculty of St. Mary Our Mother School; Maribeth Leipold, in our Faith Formation office; our catechists and aides Jackie Conklin, Abbi, Emma & Kim Kelly, Megan Kimball, Shirley Lant, Ronnie Lepkowski, Gwen Stone. We thank them for their assistance with our children and their families. We thank the people of St. Mary Our Mother for your support of our children and their families as we celebrate together this very special First Communion day. It is a great day for our parish.

PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE CONTINUED... As we congratulate our children on receiving their First Communion, we also wish to honor and recognize all mothers on this Mother’s Day. May God continue to bless all mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but always!

American Flags
As we approach the Memorial Day holiday, we will honor our veterans and service men and women by flying an American flag. Flags are available by calling either the school office at 739-9157 or the parish office at 739-
3817. A donation of $20.00 is appreciated. Thank you!
CMA Annual Appeal The 2016/2017 CMA annual appeal ends on May 31st. The CMA provides funding for important programs, services, and ministries that strengthen our whole Church. Why is it important that I give to the Appeal? From the very beginnings of the faith and the earthly ministry of Our Lord, our Church has depended on the faithful to provide their time and energy, skills and gifts in building the Kingdom of God. Without financial support, we could not adequately teach our young, help our old, feed our poor, maintain our churches and other buildings, or provide for our priests. The Body of Christ’s only real means of support is through the generosity of its members. Thank you for your donations to the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

REGIONAL EVENTS
Called to Care for Our Common Home
Pope Francis teaches, “The entire material universe speaks of God’s love, His boundless affection for us. Soil, water, mountains, everything is, as it were, a caress of God.” (Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home) The earth is our home given to us by God, who trusts us to care for this gift for ourselves and future generations. A presidential executive order earlier this year rescinded and weakened many environmental protections. Bishop Frank J. Dewane, chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, stated in response: “With this recent order, the administration risks damage to our air, our waters and, most importantly, our people, particularly the poor and vulnerable, without proposing a concrete and adequate approach to meet our stewardship obligations as a nation.”
Please contact the White House at 202-456-1111 or www.whitehouse.gov to advocate for policies that curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The Wounded Healers’ Bereavement Support Group
The Wounded Healers’ Bereavement Support Group will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 9th from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Mary Our Mother School. This month we will hold our Annual Memorial Service which was cancelled in January. There is no charge for the monthly meetings. For more information, please call 796-2795. All are wel-come.
“Life After Easter”
Notre Dame Retreat House, 5151 Foster Road, Canandaigua will hold a day retreat on Tuesday, May 16th, “Life After Easter”, presented by Father Dan Tormey. The day begins with 9:00 a.m. registration along with coffee and pastries; 9:30 a.m. conference begins; lunch at noon; reconciliation and Mass; day ends at 3:00 p.m. For more details on the presentation and what the day offers, please visit website www.notredameretreat.org. You may register by call-ing 585-394-5700; fee of $25.00 is payable at registra-tion. Fr. Tormey will offer wonderful insights and an opportunity for quiet reflection as well as group shar-ing.
