7% is no downwardGDP growthfor FY19: Garg

New Delhi, March 1 (GNS) : The government onFriday said there was no downward revision of GDPgrowth for 2018-19 (at 7 per cent) if seen in the con-text of growth rates for the last two financial years.

Subhash Chandra Garg, Secretary, Department ofEconomic Affairs (DEA), said on Friday the SecondAdvance Estimates of GDP factored in a higher base.

"The growth needs to be looked at in view of thehigher base," Garg said.

On Thursday, the Central Statistics Office (CSO)lowered the FY19 GDP growth in the Second AdvanceEstimates of national income to 7 per cent from 7.2per cent in the First Advance Estimates, attributing itto a slowdown in agriculture and manufacturing.

"The GDP was revised last year as well as the yearbefore. This growth is on top of that. The real GDP hasbeen revised upwards to Rs 144 lakh crore from theGDP in the first estimates for 2018-19, which was Rs141 lakh crore. So the GDP has actually gone up fromthe earlier estimates," Garg said.

"Likewise, the nominal GDP has been revised up-wards from Rs 188 lakh crore to Rs 190 lakh crore. Sothere is an upward revision in GDP as compared to thefirst estimates. Therefore, the 7 per cent growth hasto be seen in the context of a much higher base due tothe revisions which have been made.

"Last year's GDP was initially 6.7 per cent while thisyear's projection was 7.2 per cent. Now the previousyear's GDP has been revised to 7.2 per cent while theprojection for 2018-19 has been revised to 7 per cent.If these factors are taken together, the GDP has actu-ally gone up from 6.9 per cent to about 7.1 per cent. There is no downward revision," the DEA Secretarysaid. India's economic growth slowed to a five-quarterlow of 6.6 per cent in the October-December period ofthe present fiscal, according to the CSO statement re-leased on Thursday.Slower growth in Q3, and thedownward revisions in Q1 and Q2, has brought downthe overall GDP projection for 2018-19 to 7 per centfrom the earlier estimate of 7.2 per cent.

Advanced brain simulator to helpunderstand neurological disorder

In a bid to improve understanding of neurologi-cal disorders, researchers have created a fast andenergy-efficient simulation of part of a rat brain byusing computer chip manufacturer NVIDIA's Artifi-cial Intelligence (AI) compute platform.

Developing faster and more efficient simulatorscould increase the level of understanding the brainfunction and identify how damage to a particularstructure in neurons can lead to deficits in brainfunction. For creating the simulator, the research-ers used computer hardware designed for 3Dgames, according to the study published in the jour-nal Frontiers in Neuroscience. The study showed thata single Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) was able toachieve processing speeds up to 10 per cent fasterthan is currently possible using either asupercomputer or the SpiNNaker neuromorphic sys-tem, a custom-built machine.

The team was also able to achieve energy sav-ings of 10 times compared to either the SpiNNakeror supercomputer simulations. The academics hopethat the flexibility and power of GPUs means thatthey could play a key role in creating simulatorscapable of running models that begin to approachthe complexity of the human brain.

"Our work shows that, in the near term, they(GPUs) are a competitive design for high perfor-mance computing and have the potential to makeadvances far beyond where CPUs have brought usto so far," said Thomas Nowotny Professor ofInformatics at the University of Sussex in Britain."We are very impressed by the use of the NVIDIAAI compute platform for brain simulations spear-headedat the University of Sussex and are glad we are able tosupport research at the leading edge of computationalneuroscience as well as AI," Chris Emerson, Headof Higher-Education and Research Sales in UK andIreland at NVIDIA, said in a statement.

Here's how gut bacteria cancurb harmful effects of high BP

To a large extent our well-being depends onwhat bacterial guests in our digestive tract consumeas researchers have found that beneficial gut mi-crobes can produce from dietary fibre a fatty acidcalled propionate which can protect against theharmful consequences of high blood pressure.

The substance calms the immune cells that driveup blood pressure, according to the study publishedonline in the journal Circulation.

"Propionate works against a range of impair-ments in cardiovascular function caused by highblood pressure," said lead researcher DominikMuller, Professor at Max Delbrck Center for Molecu-lar Medicine in the Helmholtz Association in Berlin,Germany."This may be a promising treatment op-tion, particularly for patients who have too little ofthis fatty acid," Muller said.

The results explain why a diet rich in fibre, whichhas been recommended by nutrition organisationsfor many years, helps prevent cardiovasculardiseases.Whole-grain products and fruits, for ex-ample, contain cellulose and inulin fibers, from whichgut bacteria produce the beneficial molecules likepropionate. For the study, the researchers fed pro-pionate to mice with elevated blood pressure. Af-terwards, the animals had less pronounced dam-age to the heart or abnormal enlargement of theorgan, making them less susceptible to cardiac ar-rhythmia. Vascular damage, such as atherosclero-sis, also decreased in mice, the study said.

Low Vitamin D intakefound in asthma patients

The recent research has found a reduced Vita-min D intake in occupational asthma patients.

Previously, Vitamin D intake was rarely evalu-ated in cases of occupational asthma regardless ofit being an important part of nutrition. The mainobjective of this study was to assess the Vitamin Dintake in occupational asthma patients and its rela-tion with body mass index, co-morbidities relatedto Vitamin D deficit, lung function and quality of life.

The researchers found a reduced Vitamin D in-take in both obese and non-obese asthma patients. The study was published in JAMA Network Open.

Lower intake was found in mild asthma groupcompared to severe asthma group. Regressionanalysis revealed a different pattern in the asthmagroups.

The Impact score in irritant asthma indicated astronger relationship with BMI while the symptomscore in allergic asthma group was closely associ-ated with the Vitamin D intake.

The researchers concluded that the relation be-tween obesity and Vitamin D on clinical cores andlung function depended on the asthma phenotype.

It was recommended that the nutritional inter-ventions in all occupational asthma phenotypesshould be an important aspect in future treatments, especially targeting body fat reduction and achieve-ment of daily recommended intake of Vitamin D.

For Congress, contestingLok Sabha polls appearsto be uphill task

For the Congress party leader-ship in BJP-ruled HimachalPradesh, contesting the parliamen-tary polls appears to be an uphilltask.A majority of Congress lead-ers apparently consider themselvesover the hill, while all fourimcumbent BJP Members of Par-liament are enthusiastic about go-ing to the voters again."There istoo much confusion over who willlead the party in the Lok Sabhaelections or who will contest," a se-nior state Congress leader, who didnot wish to be identified.

He said the party is divided intwo camps -- one led by six-timeChief Minister Virbhadra Singh andthe other by former Union MinisterAnand Sharma.

Octogenarian Virbhadra Singhhas refused to contest the LokSabha elections from the Mandiseat he has thrice representedsince 1971.

Former state ministers MukeshAgnihotri and Asha Kumari andformer state party presidentSukhwinder Singh Sukhu are alsoreluctant to contest, party insiderssay. The reason they cited is theparty high command's decision notto field incumbent legislators. "Theparty cadre and the leaders areconfused about who their leader isand who will take the party to vic-tory," said a senior Congress leader,a cabinet minister in the previousVirbhadra Singh-led government.

Virbhadra Singh and his formerMP wife Pratibha Singh, who arefacing graft charges, are keen tolaunch their first-time legislator sonVikramaditya Singh from the Mandiseat. So is incumbent legislatorRajinder Rana, who is pleading thecase of his greenhorn son fromHamirpur, a seat represented bythree-time MP Anurag Thakur ofthe BJP. Rana has VirbhadraSingh's backing."We are not infavour of fielding sitting legislatorsor kin of the leaders. We are goingtake a final decision on candidatessoon," Congress state in-chargeRajni Patil told reporters.

The BJP, led by Chief Minister JaiRam Thakur, seems confident ofdoing well in the polls.

"During the last five years, therehas been unprecedented andunparallel development. Thepeople of the country want PrimeMinister Narendra Modi to onceagain lead the nation and thus, would definitely support him."

On getting a free hand to leadthe party in the general elections,he said: "Each and every partyworker of the BJP is our strengthand responsible for victory of theparty. Being head of the state, Iwould have greater responsibilityto motivate rank and file to ensurevictory of the party."

Maddie Mastro goes big on her first air during the women's halfpipe semifinals at the U.S. Open SnowboardingChampionships in Vail, Colorado.

Team Australia riders celebrate winning the men's team pursuit final during the UCI Track Cycling WorldChampionship in Pruszkow, Poland.

Mumbai, March 1 : In-dia skipper Virat Kohli onFriday said based on therequirement of the team,he will be "more thanhappy to bat at numberfour" in the World Cup,beginning May 30.

"I've batted a lot oftimes at number four. Idon't necessarily try it outas I've done that a lot inthe past. My game doesn'tchange much from num-ber three to four becausetemplate is quite similar. In any given situation I tryto play the game I know,"Kohli said on the eve ofODI series against Austra-lia.

When asked whetherthe Indian Premier League(IPL) will influence theWorld Cup selection, Kohlisaid he doesn't see any-thing changing with howthe IPL goes for anyplayer.

"I don't see IPL influ-encing the World Cup se-lection. That would be veryradical analysis. We needto have a solid team be-fore we head into IPL. Weneed to be clear as towhat we want during theWorld Cup. If one or two

Ready to bat at four ifteam requires, says Kohli

players don't have a goodIPL season, it doesn'tmean picture for WorldCup will change," hepointed out.

Talking about the bowl-ing options for the 50-overworld tournament, Indiaskipper said, "bowlers willdepend on the oppositionwe will play, consideringwho will be more effectiveagainst the batsmen ofother team".

He further said, "If con-ditions are seaming thenit will be more pace domi-nating along with Hardik(Pandya) who is the all-rounder in the team. It isall about the combinations.I don't see one ahead ofthe other. Both(Yuzvendra Chahal andKuldeep Yadav) of themtogether are the strongestspin bowling partners inthe world at the moment. Our success in thesecouple of years is mainlybecause of these twoguys and their impact inthe middle overs and theirability to pick wickets forus."

When quipped if KLRahul will make it to theWorld Cup squad, Kohli

said when Rahul plays heoperates at different level, adding in patches over thelast season he has per-formed brilliantly.

"He (Rahul) can keepbatting like that. It's diffi-cult to find a consistentbatsman who can playgood cricketing shots andstill win you games. It's arare ability and I think he'sall the shorts. He can buildon this and get somemore innings under hisbelt. He's made strongcase for himself in theWorld Cup," he said.

India will host Austra-lia for a five-match ODIseries to bring the curtaindown on their internationalseason ahead of theWorld Cup. The first gameis scheduled on March 2at the Rajiv Gandhi Inter-national Stadium inHyderabad.

"Both the teams knoweach other very well. Aus-tralia has better idea ofplaying in Indian condi-tions because of theirnumber of players playingin the IPL. So, we haveto be our absolute best.N o t h i n g c a n b et aken lightly," Kohli said.

Hyderabad, March 1 :Getting the combinationright for the World Cup willbe the central themewhen India take on Aus-tralia in a five-match ODIseries starting here onSaturday.

India were white-washed 0-2 in the T20 se-ries by the Aussies. Butafter the two games, skip-per Virat Kohli said it won'timpact much as the teamis hellbent on experiment-ing with the XI to see whichcombination would workbest in England andWales this summer.

"Every team will look tofine-tune whatever theyneed to before the WorldCup, and we'll keep doingthat in the ODI series too,but we still want to winevery match we play,"skipper Kohli had said af-ter the Bengaluru T20loss.

In the Indian probable15-member squad, thereare two slots which are stillto be claimed and the fourcontenders are K.L.Rahul, Rishabh Pant,Vijay Shankar andSiddarth Kaul. DineshKarthik, who has fallen out

Ahead of World Cup, India look tocontinue experiments in Australia series

of favour of late, will alsobelieve he has an outsidechance.

Since returning to themix after his comments ona TV show led to his ex-pulsion, Rahul has givena good account of himselfin the two T20s withscores of 50 and 47.

All eyes will also be onPant, who hasn't beenconsistent in the shorterformats but has the talentto take the game awayfrom the opposition on hisday. For Vijay Shankar,Hardik Pandya's fitnessand his form could be anopening for him but theTamil Nadu all-rounderneeds to improve his bowl-ing.

Kaul is a wild card andcould get a look in with themanagement still tryingwith Khaleel Ahmed.

With MohammedShami and Jasprit Bumrahbeing automatic choices,Kaul will probably get twogames to prove his worth.

Coming to the series, the Australians will be highon confidence after the T20series win. But the 50-overformat will be a differentchallenge altogether for

the visitors. India will wel-come back AmbatiRayudu, veteran all-rounder Kedar Jadhav andShami in the mix.

Also the formidablewrist spin pair of KuldeepYadav and YuzvendraChahal will be operating intandem to add pressure.

The Aussies, buoyedby the maiden T20 triumphover India, will be eager tocontinue the momentumthey have gained.

Squads:India: Virat Kohli (c),

Shikhar Dhawan, RohitSharma, Ambati Rayudu,Mahendra Singh Dhoni(wk), Kedar Jadhav, VijayShankar, Jasprit Bumrah,Mohammed Shami,Kuldeep Yadav, YuzvendraChahal, Rishabh Pant,Siddarth Kaul, KL Rahul,Ravindra Jadeja.

Australia: Aaron Finch(c), D'Arcy Short, ShaunMarsh, Marcus Stoinis,Usman Khawaja, AlexCarey, Peter Handscomb,Ashton Turner, AdamZampa, JasonBehrendor ff, JhyeRichardson, Pat Cummins,Andrew Tye, N a t h a nCoulter-Nile, Nathan Lyon.

Hyderabad, March 1 :India captain Virat Kohli onFriday said the World Cupteam will be decided be-fore the Indian PremierLeague (IPL) starts andperformances in the cash-rich domestic T20 tourna-ment will have no bearingin team selection.

"No, I don't see the IPLhaving any influence onWorld Cup selection. Ithink that will be very, veryradical sort of analysis,"Kohli said on the eve of thefirst ODI against Australia.

"We need to have asolid team. Before wehead into the IPL, we needto be absolutely clear ofwhat team we want for theWorld Cup. I don't see any-thing changing on how theIPL goes for any of theplayers. "If one or two play-ers do not have a good IPL

World Cup team will be more or lesssorted out before IPL, says Virat Kohli

season, it doesn't meanthat they are out of the pic-ture for the World Cup.Those things are not go-ing to matter," Kohli set therecord straight.

Young Rishabh Panthas been in poor form oflate but Kohli said he willbe given more opportuni-ties but not at the cost ofplaying a bowler less.

"We will have to thinkabout the combinations. Idon't think play ing abowler less is a goodidea because with theextra fielder in till the40th over, it becomesvery difficult to sort of geta few guys to chip inwith a few overs hereand there.

"We will have to workout the batting combina-t ion to t ry and g ivegame-time to the guys we

want to. But, I don't seethe bowling combinationchanging," the skippersaid. Kohli also lavishedpraise on KL Rahul andhinted that he did impressthe team managementwith his good shows in theT20s

"It augurs really well.KL, when he plays well, isoperating at a differentlevel I feel. We have seenhim do that in the IPL lastyear and in patches overthe last season we playedas a team."

Kohli explained whatmakes Rahul special.

"It's very difficult to finda consistent player, whocan play good cricketingshots and sti l l win yougames at a strike-rateof over 140 or 150. Hehas all the shots andhas a solid game as well.

"

New Delhi, March 1 : League clubs are waiting fora meeting with All India Football Federation (AIFF)chief Praful Patel as their fate hangs in the balance.

With the I-League reaching its last lap for the 2018-19 season, the question once again doing the roundsis the much-talked about Indian Super League (ISL)and I-League merger.

This is a possibility that has been doing the roundsfor the last few years. If some of the recent reports inthe media are to be believed, this could be the lastseason for the I-League. This has created a kind ofuncertainty among the clubs involved.

A letter submitted by the eight I-League clubs --Aizawl FC, Chennai City, Churchill Brothers, GokulamKerala, reigning champions Minerva Punjab, MohunBagan, Neroca and East Bengal -- asking for a meet-ing with Patel to discuss their future has got no re-sponse. The clubs that did not sign the letter wereReal Kashmir, Shillong Lajong (owned by AIFF vice-president Larsing Ming Sawyan) and AIFF's own teamIndian Arrows.

A senior official of Minerva Punjab FC, a signatoryto the letter, told IANS, "We have not received anyconfirmation about the meeting from the Federation."

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) constitu-

I-League clubs wait for meeting with AIFF chieftion does not allow a member country to have twonational leagues running simultaneously. This wasmade very clear by AFC General Secretary Dato'Windsor John when he was in Kolkata for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

"It's not a question of what we are favouring. It's inthe AFC constitution that one country should have oneleague.

We just gave provision (for two leagues) for a tran-sition period. That's all," Windsor told reporters. "Therewill be one league for sure," he said.

While the AFC has already submitted a roadmapfor the merger to the AIFF, the implementation of theroadmap is a huge task. All stake holders, includingclubs of both the I-League and ISL, have to be on thesame platform for the merger to become a possibility.

There is also the Football Sports Development Lim-ited (FSDL) issue. The clubs in their letter have de-manded that the country's top league should be runby AIFF and not their commercial marketing partnersFSDL as they have a conflict of interest.

Sydney, March 1 :Broadcasters in Australiarecently made a small ex-periment where they al-lowed no commentary incricket matches but thestump mics were turnedon all the time. The Inter-national Cricket Council(ICC), now, is mulling toreplicate the same for theupcoming cricket WorldCup. The tournament di-rector Steve Elworthy saidthat he is in favour of keep-ing the stump mics turnedon all the times and as-serted that the idea needsto be discussed.

"From a fan engage-ment point of view, beingable to do this for fans andspectators who are com-

ICC mulls all-time-on stump mics for World Cuping to the game or arewatching on TV, thesethings need to be dis-cussed, and need to beaddressed, ESPNcricinfoquoted Elworthy, as saying.People want to get close totheir heroes. They want tounderstand what goes on inthe heat of the battle. Butyou've also got to under-stand there are sensitivi-ties around these things. So it is a fine balancingact," he said.

"But I would genuinelylike to see that accessi-bility granted. I'd like tosee it when players do getcloser to the fans, [so] fansand spectators can wit-ness what actually goeson the field, the director

added. Meanwhile, theFederation of InternationalCricketers' Associations(FICA) has called for a pro-tocol to govern the use theaudio of the stump mic.FICA executive chairmanTony Irish voiced his con-cern saying that hostbroadcasters might makeselective use of the audio.

ICC chief executiveDavid Richardson said thatfrom a disciplinary policingpoint of view they will en-sure consistent use of thestump mic.

He further stated thatstump mic is a useful me-dium to detect any offen-sive language or behaviour. What [ICC] will do, cer-tainly from a disciplinary

policing point of view, wewill make sure that we willapply [stump mics] con-sistently," Richardson toldESPNcricinfo. "So, al-though the broadcastermight decide not to broad-cast to the public becausehe might feel that some-times the comments onthe field can be pretty ba-nal and irritating, I supposeto the viewers, as long as thataudio is still available to thematch officials to use ifnecessary."

The audio from thestump mic will allow usto be more consistent inhow that particular typeof behaviour is policed. As to the players may begetting upset, that's silly.
