Building for Mission

A special congregation meeting has been scheduled for Sunday, January 14, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. (immediately following the late service). In the event of inclement weather, the special congregation meeting will be re-scheduled for Sunday, January 21, 2018.

The purpose of the meeting is to act on a recommendation of Congregation Council to en-gage our architect, Marotta/Main, to prepare construction drawings for Phase I of Building for Mission and to solicit contractor bids.

On Sunday, January 7, 2018, (the Sunday preceding the special meeting), Marotta/Main will make a presentation to the congregation at 11:30 a.m. (immediately follow-ing the late service). Based on input received during the feasibility study interviews in No-vember, Marotta/Main and the Building for Mission Steering Committee have prioritized the construction/renovation projects included in the preliminary design presented to the congre-gation in June 2017 and have developed a master plan, which “phases” the projects over time. Our capital campaign consultant, the Rev. Renee LiaBraaten, also will be present on the 7th to share her feasibility study report and recommendations.

We hope to see you on the 7th and 14th!

On the right is a rendering of the two-story addition being discussed as “Phase I” of Building for Mission. The addition would create a welcoming weekday and Sunday entrance and open gathering spaces on each level, handicapped accessibility, and better connection and flow between our worship and program/Christian Ed space.

This year’s theme is “Looking Forward, We Stand United”.

The featured speaker is Rozella Haydee White, Houston City

Director, Mission Year, and former Director of Young Adult

Ministry for the ELCA. Music will be provided by the First

Baptist Church Choir, Steelton.

‘Round-the-Tree Carol Sing — Thanks to all who helped organize, provided food, played

in the band and supported WELCA by purchasing items from the gift table. What a wonder-

ful evening for the close to 120 people in attendance!!

visits subsequent to my recent surgery.

Congregation Council transition—2018 Officers

Many thanks to David Haag, Yvonne Karper, Phyllis Orenyo, Frank Ramond and Josh Staley, whose service as

council members ended at the end of December. We are grateful for their leadership and commitment to the

congregation!

During worship on Sunday, January 14, 2018, we will be installing the council members elected by the

congregation at its annual meeting in November to serve three-year terms: John Bartko, Kathy Brunie, Don

Fraley, Lisa Kratzer, and Sarah Niebler, as well as the officers elected by the council for 2018: Jered Hock,

president, Tali Martin, vice president, Hope Miller, treasurer, and Sam Orner, secretary.

Please take the opportunity to thank these faithful servants for their labors!

ADULT FORUM

For six weeks beginning January 8, Pastor Leber will lead a discus-

sion of the book entitled The Good Funeral: Death, Grief and The

Community of Care by Thomas G. Long and Thomas Lynch. Cop-

ies of the book are available in the church office, if you are inter-

ested in attending.

We welcome all adults Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in room 16. Please join us!

Thank you to all who have helped to shape my first Advent and

Christmas season with you! Special thanks to the choirs, our guest

musicians, and our staff for their valuable help and hard work. Also,

a big thank you to David Erickson for all of his wonderful music at

the organ and piano. Very glad to call First Lutheran my home!

Theme – “Getting and Staying Connected to God”

Who – you and your invited guest who are of confirmation age and above

Think about it. What circumstance or event caused you to think about the highest power in your life? Was it an auto accident? Was it a health issue? Was it a death in the family? Was it a world event? Hopefully that highest power is our Triune God.

Sometimes we get connected because of an unusual event or circumstance. Then there is a dis-connect for a while until something else happens to get our attention again.

This retreat will focus on “Getting and Staying Connected to God” …. looking at God’s Word and following the examples given by Jesus.

Sign up, show up, and bring a friend and your Bible. Your early registration will help us pre-pare enough food and materials. Thank you!

The community of faith at First continues to enjoy the privilege of serving

others through various social ministries.

It is a joy to thank everyone who served, with God’s help, to make our fol-

lowing holiday social ministry initiatives wonderfully successful:

� Contributing to Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday dinner bags for Project SHARE

� Fulfilling the Christmas wishes of many children through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree

Program

� Baking, donating, packaging, and delivering cookies to homebound members, drivers served

through the Truck Stop Ministry, and inmates at the Cumberland County Prison

The Salvation Army contacted First regarding an imminent financial crisis. They anticipated a staff person

would be taking paid medical leave for an extended period. Unexpectedly, two additional staff experienced

medical needs requiring the same. Specifically, the need to hire interim staff to supervise volunteers, to contin-

ue operations, required over $3,000. While the Salvation Army reached out to local churches for assistance,

First’s Social Ministry Committee decided to contribute $1,150 from funds available for benevolence. An indi-

vidual from the congregation, wishing to remain anonymous, gave $2,000, so First’s combined response met

the Salvation Army’s critical need. When other community resources, including congregations, made contribu-

tions, the amount of donations totaled over $5,000. What a wonder it is to personally experience the results of

God working among us through His people!

Our social ministry focus for January is Carlisle Combined Area Resources for Emergency Shelter (Carlisle

C.A.R.E.S.). First represents a valuable “downtown” space for providing individuals experiencing homeless-

ness with a warm and dry space to sleep. So many volunteers stepped up to serve as church hosts for January

that no one needs to take responsibility for more than two evenings. Thank God, we’ve had the opportunity to

participate as a host church for many years.

Social ministry at First will take various forms in 2018 including, but not limited to, a closer relationship with

our missionaries, the assimilation of support for our sister parish under social ministry, and discerning local

and global ministries to support.

I wanted to let you all know that I received many words of thanks today from inmates as they re-

ceived their giJs [container of cookies and a pair of socks], and that, also, a number of folks have

stopped me today as I’ve been moving around the prison and asked if I would somehow relay

their gra(tude to those who both provided the cookies and those who spent their evening pre-

paring the packages. I sensed a humility in that gra(tude that spoke even more loudly than their

words because, I believe, it reflects the sense of unworthiness so many of the people here feel.

When those feelings of unworthiness are touched by acts of compassion and selfless interest,

spiritual healing, however small, takes place. So thank you on behalf of Cumberland County Pris-

on. And I thank you.

OF CARING

services on Superbowl Sunday, February 4. It
