First Destination Purpose

The collection of data regarding our graduating students is increasingly important, not only to faculty and staff within the School of Science, but also to parents, prospective students, alumni, and the Indianapolis community. The Indiana Commission on Higher Education (ICHE) demands a return on investment for college graduates who earn a degree. ICHE’s metric states that “Indiana’s colleges and universities will publicly report their graduates’ job placement rates, licensure rates and average annual earnings.” This is a part of the overall “Reaching Higher, Achieving More” publication, which ties several metrics to state funding.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) is helping to set standard questions, definitions, and methodology so that institutions can be easily compared. This information includes the relevant metrics that will satisfy state, local, and federal needs and will be translatable from one institution to another. PREPs (Pre-Professional and Career Preparation for Science Students) is spearheading this data collection and has provided this report in the aggregate according to the national standard. We have also broken this data down to a program level to provide more detailed information.

IUPUI has been ranked as an “up and coming university” according to US News and World Report. The School of Science’s First Destination Survey Results provide us with yet another opportunity to shine. We want to be able to share our graduates’ stories of utilizing their IUPUI education to embark on successful careers. This is important not only for reporting to state and local government, but also can serve as a recruiting tool for prospective students and their parents, as well as assist with alumni engagement efforts. The White House College Score Card is also planning to publish data related to where our graduates are finding jobs. This is a tool which parents and prospective students will rely when choosing where they want to apply to college.

Accountability is important in everything that we do. We want each department to be a part of this ongoing effort to showcase our school. Through collaboration, we can ensure that this valuable data is collected and reported in the appropriate manner.

PREPs believes these efforts will only serve to heighten the school’s reputation as a whole, and we thank you for joining us on this endeavor.

First Destination Data

The following pages represent the data collected during the first ninety days since graduation. It is important to note that the results include both undergraduate and graduate student reporting. This data does not include the students who graduated in August of 2014. It is comprised of graduation data from December of 2013 and May of 2014.

Student Response Rate by Program

Data Received by Program

The following pages represent graduation data as broken down by program.

Our goal is to reach 100% knowledge rate by December 1st, 2014. We use the term knowledge rate to “reflect the approach of going beyond simply relying on a survey for obtaining outcomes information” (NACE, 2014).

This knowledge rate also includes information gained from advisors, faculty, and staff. Therefore, your partnership is critical in helping the School of Science achieve this goal.
