Description

Technical Data

The term firefighter switch indicates a remotely controllable DC Disconnect with which the DC side of a photovoltaic system in proximity of the mod-ules (or directly below the cable outlet) can be disconnected. The discon-nection of DC lines within a building ensures maximum safety for persons. The integral arc fault detection with UL 1699B approval allows detection of hazardous DC arc faults in the PV system and immediately trips the DC Disconnect by means of the low voltage trip module. Disconnection of the circuit helps to extinguish serial arc faults already before any safety-critical situations can arise. DC arc faults can be caused by defective components such as connectors, cables, PV modules and junction boxes due to ageing, animal bite, heavy snow-fall or mounting and installation errors. The integral arc fault detector now allows realisation of fire prevention in photovoltaic systems. Remote disconnection and reconnection provide ease of reset and thus high system availability even in large roof-mounted solar installations. In normal operating condition, the system will automatically re-start after an inadvertent shutdown, e.g. due to a brief supply voltage dip.The E-T-A technology of arc fault detection significantly enhances the safety of photovoltaic systems.

Lock-out feature

l The arc fault detector approved to UL 1699B detects serial and parallel DC arc faults by means of a detection algorithm tailor-made for photovoltaic applications. The circuit disconnection by means of the Disconnect helps to extinguish serial arcs.

l Because of the random nature of arc faults with different types of arcs (serial, parallel, etc…) we tested the PVSEC-…-AF... with various rectifiers of major manufacturers in various application situations to achieve the highest possible arc fault detection rate.

l Using the E-T-A technology for arc fault detection significantly increases the safety and reliability of PV systems.

Operating controls on the arc fault detector:l Push button “Test” After pushing the button “Test” the PVSEC-…-AF... carries out

a self test. During the self test the LEDs “ON” and “ARC” light simultaneously. When the self test is completed successfully, the PVSEC-…-AF... opens the load contacts(➡ position “0”) and only the LED “ARC” remains lit. Duration self test: 0.1 to 4 seconds.

l Push button “Reset” By holding the “Reset” button for at least 0.5 seconds the PVSEC-

…-AF... is reset to normal duty after an arc detection or a positive self test. During this process the LEDs “ON” and “ARC” go out. After the subsequent start-up phase the load contacts are switched on again and the display “ON” lights green. Duration of the run-up phase approx. 4 seconds

Indicator LEDs on the arc fault detector: l LED “ON” lights green: The PVSEC-…-AF... is running on normal duty. Load contacts are

closed (➡ Switching position “I”).

l LED “ARC” lights red: Either an arc has been detected or a successful self test has been

carried out. The load contacts of the PVSEC-…-AF... are opened (➡ Switching position “O”).

l LEDs “ON” and “ARC” light simultaneously: The device carries out an internal self test. Applying DC 24 V supply

voltage or pressing the “reset” button triggers the self test.

Working principle l The PVSEC-…-AF... is generally switched on by means of the

integral remote control.l The PVSEC-...-AF... is always switched off by tripping the low

voltage release module.l The PVSEC-...-AF... is automatically switched on after the start-up

phase by applying the DC 24 V supply voltage to the terminals “+” and “-” except when:

- the slide switch is in position “0” - an arc fault was detectedl In case of an interruption of the supply voltage the PVSEC-…-AF...

will automatically be switched off. l Detection of an arc: In the switching position “0”, switching off happens immediately

and the LED “ARC” lights red. ➡ Before reset the root cause of the failure should be identified and remedied in the system.

l After detection of an arc, resetting the PVSEC-…-AF... requires the following:

- push the reset button for at least 0.5 sec. A self-test and the start-up phase follow

- briefly interrupt the supply voltage (on site or remotely).

Safety functionl After 10 operations within one minute type PVSEC-…-AF... will be

blocked for 2 minutes. If another 10 operations follow immediately afterwards, type

PVSEC-...-A1 will be blocked entirely.

l Humidity in the installation area (e.g. caused by condensation) must be avoided.

l When installed in enclosures with a high protection class, vent holes or pressurisation elements have to be used to avoide condensation.

l In the application it has to be ensured that each PVSEC-…-AF... is supplied with min. 1 A

l Maintenance: An electro-technical functional test to ensure system availability

should be carried out regularly, e.g. annually.

l Manual operation of the PVSEC-…-AF... on sitel Actuating the slide switch into the direction of the arrow trips the

switch electrically by way of the undervoltage release module.l When the slide switch is in position "0“, the PVSEC-…-AF...

is both mechanically and electrically locked. Remote actuation is then no longer possible.

l The switch can be protected against inadvertent operation in the OFF condition by means of a padlock with a shackle diam-eter of 3 - 4.3 mm.
