1. Int. Apartment of EMILY MILLER, DANIELLE JOHNSON, and 1.

BRITTANY THOMPSON

In the charming college apartment of Emily, Danielle, and

Brittany, Emily has just done the dishes and turned on

the oven to cook herself a meal, while her roommates

Brittany and Danielle watch television and read the

latest Cosmopolitan. Moments later, Emily realizes that

the oven has black smoke pouring out of the top, starting

a panic in the apartment.

EMILY

Ummmm…Danielle…I think something is wrong with the

oven. There’s a lot of smoke…I’m not even kidding

right now.

DANIELLE

(Without looking up from her magazine) Oh, it’ll be

fine. It probably just hasn’t been used yet.

EMILY

(In a panicked tone) No, seriously, you need to come

look at this. There is so much smoke.

DANIELLE

Oh my gosh Emily, you’re so freaking dramatic.

Brittany jumps up from the couch to inspect, while

rolling her eyes.

BRITTANY

Oh, holy shit! Danielle! The oven is really on fire!

Danielle finally tears her eyes away from her magazine

long enough to realize that the apartment is slowly

filling with thick smoke. Emily is running around like a

chicken without a head, looking for a fire extinguisher

and opening all the windows and the door.

EMILY

Where is the extinguisher?! What do we do?! Should I

call the fire department?! What’s the number?!

Should we call them? There’s so much smoke!

DANIELLE

Page 2: Fire!

Oh my gosh, is my laptop gonna get damaged?

EMILY

Forget about your laptop! Our apartment is on fire!

By this time the neighbors had started to gather on their

porches to watch the smoke pour out of the tiny bottom

floor apartment and the three girls screaming

frantically outside of their apartment.

EMILY

I’m calling the fire department! Wait, what number

do I call? Do I call 911? Fuck it, I’m calling 911!

(On the phone) Yeah, my oven is on fire and I

didn’t know who else to call…

While Emily is calling 911, her roommates stand petrified

at the smoke rolling from their open windows and door,

filling their entire hall with smoke so thick it is

impossible to see. Meanwhile, Brittany is calling her mom

for advice on what the roommates should do.

BRITTANY

(In a frantic tone) Mom? Our apartment is on fire.

(Pause)No, really. There’s a ton of smoke coming

from the oven. (Pause) No, we don’t know how to use

a freaking fire extinguisher.

At this time, several fire trucks pull up to the

apartment building and a long line of firemen enter the

apartment. Moments later, one of the firemen exits the

apartment to speak with the roommates.

FIREMAN

Girls, have you lived here long?

EMILY

No, we just moved in.

FIREMAN

Did you used to have an electric stove? Because it

seems that someone left some utensils underneath the

stove, where the broiler is located…on a gas

stove…like this one.
