ERDURO fire pumps are desgned to sut most fire protecton applcatons. ERDURO Pumps usually supples pumpng and control

control panels and alarm systems etc. Ths manual gves an overvew of the requrements for nstallaton, operaton and mantenance of fire pump staton equpment and therefore wll refer to equpment that may not have been manufactured or suppled by ERDURO Pumps, but s necessary for the successful operaton of the system. Before temptng to nstall the equpment t s mportant to famlarze yourself wth the man tems suppled and to ensure that the approprate cables, ppes and fittngs are avalable to mount and connect the equpment. The equpment suppled by ERDURO Pumps s shown on the contract documentaton. The fire protecton contractor s responsble for the provson of all other tems requred to complete the nstallaton. Fre pump statons wll contan a varety of equpment to meet the requrements of the specfic fire protecton nstallaton but usually wll comprse the followng man tems:

2.1 DUTY PUMP: ELECTRIC DRIVEN

PUMP SET. Selected from

the ERDURO Pumps range of

fire

pumps

to

sut the

requred system operatng parameters. These pumps may be end sucton or splt case constructon and are drven through a spacer couplng

by an electrc motor selected to meet the pump power and duty requrements.

2.2 STANDBY PUMP: DIESEL DRIVEN PUMP SET. Ths equpment comprses an fire pump matched to an engne whch has been specally prepared and approved for fire pump applcatons, together wth a ERDURO pumps’ or other manufacturer's control panel. These tems are mounted on a rgd base frame wth engne coolng system. The fuel tank assembly and control panel assembly are usually mounted separately and consst of a tank szed to match the power and duty requrements of the pump and fitted wth gauges and swtches to sut customer requrements.

2.3 CONTROL SYSTEM.

ERDURO

Pumps

can supply a full

range of control panels for both electrc and desel drven

fire

pumps, optonally to meet specal customer’s specficatons, propretary control panels from other manufacturers may be suppled. The fire protecton contractors are responsble for the provson and settng of sutable pressure swtches. Where requred, ERDUROPumps can supply a Remote Alarm Panel to provde notficaton of fire and the status of the system at a remote securty montorng staton.

2.4 PRESSURE MAINTENANCE (JACKING) PUMP. Ths s usually a small pump that s desgned to mantan pressure n the trunk man system at a pre-set level such that the system s prmed for operaton.

2.5 TYPICAL PUMP HOUSE SCHEMATIC LAYOUT . Ths dagram shows the man features of fire pump house nstallatons, these wll vary dependng upon the number and types of pumps to be nstalled and they wll be placed to sut the poston of man ppe runs etc.

SECTION 3: INSTALLATIONS

3.1 PUMP LOCATİON The pump should be nstalled as near to the water source as possble, wth the shortest and most drect sucton ppe practcal. Allow sufficent access for nspecton and mantenance wth enough headroom for an overhead crane or host of sufficent capacty to lft the heavest tem of equpment. The locaton for a desel engne drven pump may be dctated by the requrement for an ar supply and the need to vent the exhaust.

AS2941-2008 Requrements A fire pump controller must start the fire pump n response to an external startng sgnal whch s normally pressuref- a settng opressure swtch plumbed nto ppng works. Once started, the engne must contnue to run untl t s manually stopped or runs out of fuel. Each automatc or manual startng system shall have the capacty to provde a mnmum 3mn (15S ntermttent crankng wth 15S rest) cycle at full rate crankng speed.

Please Note:- Fre pump sets and control systems should be Installed, and Accepted, n full accordance wth AS2941-2008. Falure to Install pumps and other products n pumpng system compled wth AS2941 wll affect equpment warranty.

3.2 FOUNDATIONS A foundaton plnth should be constructed to support each pump set on a floor area free from expanson jonts. These foundaton plnths should be sufficently substantal to absorb vbratons and rgd enough to avod any twstng or msalgnment. As a rough gude, they should be at least 300mm wder than the pump set on all sdes and wegh between 1 and 1.5 tmes the weght of the pump set. Plnths for fire pumps are recommended to have a mnmum heght of 300mm but heght should be sufficent to acheve the necessary weght and to accommodate the pockets for fixng bolts.

3.3 INSTALLING THE PUMP SETS It s mportant to nstall fire pump sets BEFORE nstallng the man sucton and delvery ppework. Ths s to ensure that the ppes are postoned to match the pump locaton and do not transmt load and nduce stran n the pump casng.

All fire pump sets are suppled wth rubber mounts whch should be locked on plnth by dynabolts. Adjust the heght wth shms n each poston untl the pump sucton flange s vertcal. Do not level from the base plate as ths may not be true to the shaft and flanges.

Both sucton and dscharge ppng should be supported ndependently and close to the pump so that no stran s transmtted to the pump when the flange bolts are tghtened. Use ppe hangers or other supports at ntervals necessary to provde support. When expanson jonts are used n the ppng system, they must be nstalled beyond the ppng supports closest to the pump.

Install ppng as straght as possble, avodng unnecessary bends. Where necessary, use 45° or long sweep 90° bends to decrease frcton losses.

Make sure that all ppng jonts are artght. Where reducers are used, eccentrc or 'flat top' reducers are to be fitted n sucton lnes and concentrc or straght taper reducers n dscharge and vertcal lnes. Undulatons n the ppe runs are also to be avoded. Falure to comply wth ths may cause the formaton of ar pockets n the ppework and thus prevent the correct operaton of the pump.

AIR s requred for combuston and coolng purposes, wth ar and radator cooled engnes n partcular needng large volumes of ar for coolng. Inlet and outlet apertures, sutably szed and postoned to prevent ar recrculaton, must be provded n the pump house structure. It s recommended that a low level vent matches a hgh level vent n the opposte wall. Exhaust runs should be as short as possble. Small bore ppe and/or excessve length wll cause backpressure on the engne, reducng engne performance and therefore pump output. The length and dameter of exhaust ppe must comply wth the requrements of AS2941-2008.

3.4 SUCTION & DELIVERY PIPING

Page 6: FIRE FIGHTING USER MANUAL - ERDURO · 2017-12-24 · FIRE FIGHTING USER MANUAL. Fre Pump Instructon Manual Secton Contents Secton Contents 1 Safety Instructons 5 Commssonng of Desel

The sucton ppe should be as short and drect as possble, and should be flushed clean before connectng to the pump. For sucton lft applcatons, t s advsable to use a foot valve. Horzontal sucton lnes must have a gradual rse to the pump. If the pumped flud s lkely to contan foregn matter then a filter or coarse straner should be fitted to prevent ngress to the pump.

A non-return valve or check valve and a dscharge gate valve usually precede the dscharge ppe. The check valve s to protect the pump from excessve backpressure and reverse rotaton of the unt and to prevent back flow nto the pump n case of stoppage or falure of the drver. The dscharge valve s used when shuttng down the pump for mantenance.

Shaft algnment must be checked agan after the final postonng of the pump unt and connecton to ppework as ths may have dsturbed the pump or motor mountng postons.

The followng secton covers thenormal servce requrng connecton, but the actual requrements for each nstallaton wll vary may not

dependng upon the equpment suppled. The refore, some of the tems covered be relevant to specfic nstallatons.

Ensure that ste electrcal power supply characterstcs match the data on the equpment data plates If the control panels

were manufactured or suppled by ERDURO Pumps, the wrng dagrams wll be ncluded wth the nstructon manual. If others

have suppled the panels, refer to ther lterature for electrcal detals and wrng nstructons.

All cables should be nstalled by a competent electrcal contractor.

Install the electrc motor starter panel n a convenent poston for use and wre up to mans supply, to the electrc motor and to the trunk man pressure swtch. Earth bondng connectons are provded on all base frames and must be connected to a sutable earth pont.

4.2 DIESEL ENGINE DRIVEN PUMP SETS

4.2.1 CONTROL PANELS AND FUEL TANKS The freestandng stand s suppled for supportng control panel and fuel tank, whch are suppled loosely for the ease of transport and settng up. The whole assembly should be mounted n a convenent poston wthn 4m to start motor of desel engne for use and wre up to the desel drven pump set followng nstructons on the wrng dagrams suppled n the manual.

Connect the control panel to the mans electrcal supply as shown n the wrng dagram. Where a pressure swtch n the trunk man ntates the start, fit the pressure swtch n a convenent poston and wre up n accordance wth wrng dagram.

The fuel tanks must be bg enough for engne run up to 6 hours. And fuel gauge s fitted on the top to dsplay fuel level.

4.2.2 THE STAND When a fuel tank stand s suppled t s normally desgned to be fixed to a floor havng the same level as the pump house. The stand must be hgh enough for gravty feed to the fuel tanks. If a stand s not suppled or when specal condtons apply, reference should be made to the desel engne manufacturer's nstructons for gudance on the correct level to mount the fuel tank. It s mportant to comply wth the requrement for gravty fuel feed to fire pump engnes and to provde access for refillng and toppng up the fuel.

4.2.3 WATER COOLING SYSTEMS Most fire pump desel engne nstallatons use water-coolng systems. These fall nto three categores - radator, heat exchanger and wer tank. RADIATOR cooled engnes employ a fan to draw ar through the radator thus drectly coolng the closed engne crcut. The pump house must have nlet and outlet vents of sutable sze to provde adequate ar wthout re-crculaton. HEAT EXCHANGER

closed engne crcuts, are cooled by a supply of coolant from the pump outlet. A flow control system s fitted to prevent contnuous flow of water to waste under standstll condtons. Ths supply s passed through the heat exchanger and s then pped to waste.

4.2.4 BATTERIES Batteres for desel engne startng may be ether lead acd or nckel cadmum type. Lead acd batteres may be dry-charged or conventonal; they may be suppled dry or pre-filled and charged. Refer to the battery manufacturer's manual for detals on puttng new batteres nto use. Where nckel cadmum batteres are suppled they are charged and have travel plugs fitted, removal of travel plugs and the commssonng engneer usually does connecton.

4.2.5 EXHAUST SYSTEM

Unless specal condtons apply, a set of standard exhaust system components s suppled to sut typcal pump house applcatons. Assemble the engne exhaust system (flexble ppe, sold ppe and slencer) wth the flexble secton attached to the engne and the dscharge passng through the nearest outsde wall Exhaust ppe runs should be as short as possble to mnmze back pressure on the engne. If t s requred that the exhaust system s extended, refer to Smoothflo Pumps for gudance as the system may need to be ncreased n dameter to avod excessve backpressure.

4.3 ANCILLARY CONNECTIONS

Electrc motor and ar or radator cooled desel engne drven pumps wll have a recrculaton system fitted to provde sufficent water crculaton to cool the pump when t s runnng wth the dscharge valve closed. For these unts a feed s taken from the pump outlet, va a pressure dfferental valve (pressure relef valve), ether back nto the system water source, or must be pped to waste.

For heat exchanger cooled desel engnes, the coolng water s taken from the pump outlet. Ths s sufficent to m

SECTION 7: OPERATIONS

Ths secton outlnes a 'typcal' fire pump nstallaton comprsng one electrc motor drven pump set, one deselset and one pressure mantenance pump often referred to as a Jockey Pump (Jackng Pump).

Ths pressure mantenance pump s electrc motor drven. Installaton of ths pump set follows an dentcalprocedure to the man pump sets but reference should be made to the manufacturer's manual for further detal.

The equpment suppled may vary n quantty and type to sut the operatonal requrements of the nstallaton, but the prncples outlned are common.

The pressure mantenance (jackng) pump s controlled wth a pressure swtch n the trunk man. It wll swtchthe pump on and off perodcally to mantan trunk man pressure at a hgh level, ready for ntal operaton.

The operaton of fire pumps s also controlled wth pressure swtches n the man trunk man, set to start thepumps at predetrmned pressure levels.

In the event of a fire, water s released nto the regon of the fire. The pressure n the trunk man then falls andet level the pressure swtch sgnals the duty pump to start.

If due to electrcal or mechancal falure the duty pump fals to functon or the sprnkler/hydrant demand exceedsthe capacty of the duty pump, the pressure wll contnue to fall untl another pressure swtch set at a lower levelsgnals the standby desel engne drvenpump to start.

On recept of a start sgnal, the desel engne control panel commences a predefined startng sequence. Ths wllgve the requred number of rotatons usng battery sets alternately for the pre-set number of start attempts or untl the

NOTE - Fre pumps contnue runnng untl swtched off manually.

Routne System Testng: Perodc testng of fire pumps s requred to meet nsurance requrements to ensure that adequate fire protecton savalable at all tmes.

After testng t s mportant to ensure that all power and control panel swtches are correctly set and that the fire pumps are ready for operaton.

It s also mportant to ensure that sufficent fuel s provded for desel drven pumps to gve the requred number of hours of runnng.
