What makes our countryside so compelling and amazing is the unpredictability of the elements that make the Blackmore Vale, in which we live, so profoundly expressive. The Vale has the ability to change it's countenance unexpectedly, compelling us to see its beauty in a new light each day, month and season. It is as if the Vale senses the moods of those living within the villages, hamlets and towns, and seeks to share with us both the joys and melancholy. Those joyous moments of sunshine, when the light dapples between the beautiful summer foliage in the woodland. The beauty of the flowers, that have been blooming since early spring, primroses, bluebells and a myriad of other plants, the bird song that brightens up our daily lives. The melancholy when the gales blow, mists that swirl around Hambledon, Hod and Okeford Hills, the rain that falls on us, usually when we decide to bar-b-cue, so we get wet and end up with a soggy burger. This July, as we look forward to a summer in which we are, hopefully, able to go out and about to walk around and enjoy our beautiful vale, let us thank God that we live in such a beautiful, peaceful and friendly part of God's wonderful creation, that we can daily bathe in this beauty for free. Okeford Fitzpaine Village Hall

After the appalling weather forecasts on the previous day it was decid-ed to re-locate the Fippenny Fayre to the Village Hall and Greenhayes. It so happened that the weather was not as bad as anticipated and the event was very enjoyable. A profit of £657 was made, well down on previous years, but as many people had no doubt been put off by the forecasts, this was a good result.

The Hall Committee would like to give a hearty thank you to the many

stalwarts who turned out to help and also to the brave souls who supported us. We hope that you enjoyed yourselves.

An application has been received from A-plant Lux on behalf of BT to close

part of Higher Street, Okeford Fitzpaine from the junction with Fippenney

Hollow to the junction with road to Turnworth Village Road. The closure has

been requested to allow contractors to carry out works to renew poles and

overhead cables. These works are programmed to commence on Monday 29th

July 2013 to 09th August 2013, a period of 10 days, between 09.30hrs and

Okeford Fitzpaine CE VA Primary School

Dear All,

We were visited by Mr Stephen McShane, Her Majesty’s Inspector on Tuesday 21st May. This visit was a follow up to our Ofsted inspection in March. The visit went very well with a positive result. We recently re-ceived a confirmation letter as follows. 28th May 2013 Dear Mr Acreman Requires improvement: monitoring inspection visit to Okeford Fitz-paine Church of England Voluntary Aided School, Dorset

Following my visit to your school on 21 May 2013, I write on behalf of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education, Children’s Services and Skills to report the findings of my visit. Thank you for the help you gave me and for the time you made available to discuss the actions you are tak-ing to improve the school since the most recent section 5 inspection.

The visit was the first monitoring inspection since the school was judged to require improvement following the section 5 inspection in March 2013. It was carried out under section 8 of the Education Act 2005. Evidence

During the visit meetings were held with you, middle leaders, members of the Governing Body, a group of pupils and the school’s effectiveness partner to discuss the action taken since the last inspection. The school action plan was evaluated. Context

One part-time teacher, who is a middle leader, will leave the school at the end of the academic year. The classes will be re-organised with the existing staffing. Main findings

The immediate re-organisation of the Early Years Foundation Stage following the section 5 inspection means that the children have more op-portunities to learn through play and the activities provided for them are more appropriate. The most recent observations of the teaching of literacy

Page 10: FIPPENNY NEWS - WordPress.com · All enquiries about Baptisms, Funerals and Christian marriage should be directed, in the first instance, to the Rev Darren A’Court, 01258 861847

10

show pupils are making good progress in lessons. Middle leaders have carried out a review of literacy and mathematics teaching and have devel-oped effective actions in order to improve.

The school has established a School Improvement Group of key gover-nors with the head teacher to respond to the recent inspection and lead im-provement work. Governors are knowledgeable and reflective. They know that the school has to be held to account more. This new group will be im-portant in this. In order to ensure they have the necessary skills an exter-nal review of governance is underway. Challenging targets for pupils to achieve in English and mathematics are in place. The leadership have the necessary tools to analyse progress. However the monitoring and evalua-tion of pupils’ progress needs to be sharper to ensure that any potential underachievement is responded to quickly so that all pupils are making at least good progress.

The school has developed an action plan. It is currently not specific enough to lead to rapid improvement. Some timescales are too long where immediate action is required. Current targets cannot be measured suffi-ciently. Monitoring and evaluation are not clear. Responsibilities for en-suring pupils’ progress, for the quality of teaching and for the school’s improvement are imprecise. Senior leaders and governors are taking ef-fective action to tackle the areas requiring improvement identified at the recent section 5 inspection. The school should take further action to:

quickly refine the current action plan to ensure that there are clear and measurable success criteria

named individuals who are responsible for improvements, including arrangements to hold them to account

timescales that will bring about rapid improvement clear arrangements for monitoring and evaluation clear roles for the local authority to support and challenge.

Ofsted may carry out further visits and, where necessary, provide fur-ther support and challenge to the school until its next section 5 inspection. External support

Since the inspection the local authority has provided training to im-prove teaching. This has been helpful for staff to consider strengths and areas for improvements. The school effectiveness partner has an accurate assessment of what the school needs to do in order to improve. It is now important to ensure that the objectives of all additional support activities are sharply focused and are monitored and evaluated effectively to ensure

that they are effective in contributing to the school’s overall improve-ment . Head Teacher I am copying this letter to the Chair of the Govern-ing Body and the Director of Children’s Services for Dorset and as below.

Yours sincerely Stephen McShane

Her Majesty’s Inspector September 2013 Staffing Structure

It is with regret that I have to share with you the fact that Mr Andrew Laws is leaving us in July at the end of this school year. Mr Laws has de-cided to leave education, make a career change and move on to pastures new. Andy will be a great loss to Okeford Fitzpaine and to the teaching profession in general and I want to offer our sincere thanks to him for all his hard work and support. We wish him well in whatever the future holds and I know that he will be missed by children, staff and parents.

We have looked closely at the impact of this loss and as usual spent time assessing future budgets and possible staffing structure to offer our children the best deal.. As a result we are restructuring for September and are planning to move to a 3 class system. Not replacing Andy Laws has been a difficult decision but it has provided financial stability for at least the next 3 years, based on our present expected numbers and budget and has provided children with a class structure that offers consistency in teaching both in the morning and in the afternoon. This is the suggested structure Class 1 (14) Reception and Year 1 - Mrs Cook-Paine and Mrs Don-aldson (job share) Class 2 (15) Year 2 and Year 3 – Miss Moriarty Class 3 (26) Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 – Mr Johnson Benefits of Change 1. The children will be part of one class and be even more familiar with their teacher (s) and teaching assistant 2. There will be 3 teachers and 3 teaching assistants in the morning and the afternoon 3. Our 9 Reception children will have greater opportunity to “learn through play” in the morning and in the afternoon and the new Year 1 children will be able to continue with the correct differentiated support as appropriate – working in their dedicated room and outside area

4. Flexibility will as always continue and Year 1 will benefit from work-ing with Year 2/3 when occasions suit 5. It will be important to offer Year 3 the challenge required because they will be in class 2 (remaining in Willow classroom – work at level 3 will be necessary to challenge the brighter children in Year 3 from September 6. Year 4 will be stretched by working with Year 5 and Year 6 (one child) as appropriate Beech Class will move up together and work with Mr John-son – again challenge is the key word and opportunities to develop at a faster rate will be provided. This is a great opportunity to push our able children towards a possible level 6 at the end of Year 6 7. There will be greater consistency and continuity for all children 8. As usual, every child will be monitored closely and offered the inter-vention required to support, stretch and challenge them 9. Change can be hard to cope with and does not always suit everyone. However, I believe this structure will offer the greatest opportunity for our children to succeed with the resources we have available in this small school – we work within the budget we have available. 10. Small is beautiful! We still provide amazing resources – smaller clas-ses in most years remain an attraction for many

Our challenge is to work together to move forward together. Future Pupils

It is great that we have 9 new reception children starting in September, more than double the number from last year!

Also the Pre-School numbers are very healthy for September and we continue to work closely with them. Our Thursday morning sessions where the older pre-school children join reception in school are working brilliantly. It makes the transition to big school so much easier. School Governors

We have 3 vacancies for September, one Parent Governor and two Foundation Governors. This is challenging but rewarding. Please speak to Ian Berry or school if you are interested. The children need you! Afternoon Cream Tea – Thursday 18th July 2013

After our successful Cream Tea earlier this year we are keen to end the year with a similar event. Many visitors expressed a desire for this to be repeated – please support us and enjoy cakes, scones with jam and cream and a welcome hot or cold drink.

US Holiday A couple with three young children went on holiday to America, and

eventually ended up waiting in line at San Francisco's Pier 41, to pur-chase tickets for a boat trip to Alcatraz. Others watched with varying degrees of sympathy and irritation as the young children fidgeted, whined, and punched one another. The frazzled parents reprimanded them, to no avail. Finally they reached the ticket window. "Five tick-ets, please," the father said. "Two round trip, three one way."

NEWS FROM THE PRE-SCHOOL

So far this half term we have again been making the most of the garden, with all of the children busy digging in the sand pit, filling and emptying containers in the sand and in the water. They are also having a lot of fun on the slide, using the dens for some quiet time or as a monsters cave! The older children have been continuing their visits to the Reception class but this time as part of their transition days. We are getting ready for our Sports Morning on July 10th, which will be followed by the Leavers party on Thursday 18th July, when we will be saying “good bye” to all those moving up to Primary School.

Are you camping this summer? Here are some helpful hints…

When using a public campground, a tuba placed outside your tent will keep the spaces on either side vacant.

You can duplicate the warmth of a down-filled bedroll by climbing into a plastic garbage bag filled with several geese.

Take this simple test to see if you qualify for solo camping: shine a torch into one ear. If the beam shines out the other ear, do not go into the woods alone.

A two-man pup tent does not include two men or a pup. A potato baked in the coals for one hour makes an excellent side dish.

A potato baked in the coals for three hours makes an excellent hockey puck.

The sight of a bald eagle has thrilled campers for generations. The sight of a bald man, however, does absolutely nothing for the eagle.

NEW VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE AT THE SturQuest COMMUNITY OFFICE

Volunteering can be such a rewarding and satisfying experience, and here at the Community Office I can confirm such notion is felt by our very dependable and valued helpers. However, such is our popularity, we need to recruit more SturQuest Community Office Volunteers to help in our very busy office. If you can commit to 3 hours (9.30am-12.30pm) once a week, have a keen interest in local activities and helping members of the public with enquiries, then, we would like to hear from you.

We also require a SturQuest Website Maintenance Volunteer to up-date the SturQuest website and social media sites. Support is needed from a dedicated specialist with experience in this area who would help us by keeping our website up-to-date with the latest news about the organisation and troubleshooting problems on an ad-hoc basis as and when they occur. If you are able to support our team at least once a week, we would like to hear from you. This is an exciting opportunity for someone to utilise their skills and join the SturQuest team.

For more information, telephone 01258 471456 or visit our website – www.stur.org.uk

Could You Be A Young Ambassador? Then join us for the first meeting at the SturQuest Community Office on Wednesday 10th July

at 6.30pm.

Young Ambassadors will bring an important new strand of input to the SturQuest team and its fellow community operations. Come along and have your say what you would like to have for young people in your area.

The role will offer exciting opportunities and provide individuals with chances to make a real difference by working with SturQuest and its asso-ciated local organisations; a chance to help shape the future of the Stur-minster Newton and the surrounding areas.

For more information, telephone 01258 471456 or visit our website – www.stur.org.uk

This year it may be in the car, a shelter on the prom or in the lee of a wall shel-tering from the rain so it’s as well to stick to ‘finger food’. More manage-able. As a change from sandwiches here are some pies, pastries and other things to fill those cold boxes. They freeze well too.

Hunter’s Rolls A nice change from Sausage Rolls.

6oz short crust or flaky pastry. 4oz corned beef, 1 apple, peeled, cored & chopped, 2 tspns chopped pickled walnuts (or other pickle to taste), 2 tspns horseradish cream, beaten egg, salt & pepper.

Roll out pastry and cut into 6 pieces, 4in x 3in (10cm x 8cm). Finely chop corned beef. Mix with apple, pickle, horseradish cream and bind with a little egg. Season to taste. Roll into 6 sausage shapes and place one on each piece of pastry, damp edges and roll up pressing edges firmly to seal. Place on baking sheet, brush with beaten egg and cook in hot ov-en 425°F/220C/Gas Mark 7 for 15 mins. Serve hot or cold.

Bacon Picnic Roll

6 back bacon rashers rinded, 1lb sausage meat, 1 apple peeled cored and finely chopped, 2 tbsps finely chopped onion, 1 tspn chopped sage (or ½ tspn dried sage), 3 hard-boiled eggs.

Finely chop 2 rashers. Mix the chopped bacon with the sausage meat, apple, onion & sage. Spread out the mixture on a floured surface to a 23cm (9 inch) square. Place the eggs in a line on the square, then roll up. Wrap the remaining bacon around the roll, wrap in foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake in pre-heated moderate oven (180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4) for about 1¼ hours. 15 mins before the end of cooking fold back the foil to allow the roll to brown . Cool completely before slicing.

Picnic Pies If you don’t fancy or approve of veal use minced pork. 8 oz boneless veal, 4 oz bacon, 8 oz pork sausages skinned, pinch ground mace, salt & pepper, 1lb puff pastry, 2 hard-boiled eggs sliced, beaten egg to glaze.

Mince veal and bacon together, then mix in sausage meat, mace and salt & pepper. Roll out pastry and use ⅔ of it to line patty tins. Put a spoonful of the meat mixture into each tin and place an egg slice on top. Cover with the rest of the meat mixture, cover with pastry lids and brush with beaten egg. Bake in hot oven (220C°/425°F/Gas mark 7) for 45 minustes, then reduce temperature to moderate (160°C/350°F/Gas mark 4)

and continue baking for 25 mins. It’s sometimes rather nice to have a home-made drink to cool down so

why not try one of these.

Apple & Orange Refresher 1lb dessert apples, peeled, core & chopped, juice of 1 lemon and water

equal to ⅓ pt, 1 oz sugagr, juice of 3 oranges. Simmer apples in lemon juice and water until just tender. Blend in

liquiiser until smooth, mix with orange juice. Chill thoroughly. Serve garnished with an orange wedge.

Indian Summer Cider One for the grown ups!

4 level tspns castor sugar, ½ pt freshly made medium strength indian tea (or what you have), ½ pt cider, crushed ice, 4 lemon slices.

Add sugar to tea, stir until disolved. Combine with the cider. Chill. Cover base of each glass with crushed ice. Fill with the tea and cider mixture. Add slice of lemon to each.

Diddy Cup for 12 servings Good for a children’s party.

3 12 oz cans (or cartons) orange juice, 12 cloves, ½ bottle French blackcurrant syrup (or Ribeena is you wish), 2 pts soda water, 6-8 ice cubes, 1 orange cut into rings, 10oz can blackcurrants (drained, sprigs mint.

Put orange juice & cloves into pan, bring slowly to boil. Strain and leave to cool. When cold add syrup and chill thoroughly. Add soda water and ice and stir. Decorate with orange rings, blackcurrants and mint.

reviver.

Holiday Picnics in the 1940’s As kids at some time during the long summer holidays, we would

pester our mums ‘Mum, Mum, can we take our tea to Bennett End Hill, please, please….? Eventually.. ‘Oh, alright then! But behave yourselves!’

Off we went, a motley crew of scruffy kids, trailing through the village,

assorted ages, boys, girls and toddlers, collecting one or two others as we went. The older girls, well trained by their mums, were very much in charge. There was always toddlers in tow. The older children took great care of the tinies. Stuffing them full of ripe blackberries, wiping noses etc. Popping them behind the inevitable bush as needed. Nobody cared about germs in those days.

We loved Bennett End Hill. Rough chalk pasture, gradually going wild, with bushes to hide in, wild flowers to pick and take home for mum. I particulaly loved the wild marjoram, covered with Chalk Hill Blue butterflies. I grow it in my garden now and it always reminds me of those carefee afternoons. We found wild strawberries and blackberries to eat and the boys hunted for adders. They never actually caught one because they made such a racket that any self-respecting snake was soon miles way. The most they found were the shed skins, still a great trophy. No one every got bitten, except for ants, some one always managed to sit on a nest. The picnic was, by modern standards, a frugal affair. Jam or fish paste sandwiches, or if you were really unlucky, bread and marg. All wrapped in greaseproof paper, or old flour bags. Sometimes a piece of cake, but not often, after all there was a war on. Coming from a fruit growing area there was always fruit. Usually Beauty of Bath apples, small rosy and sweet but with a tang to them. Occasionally, I admit, suplimented by anything that we could craftily scrump on our journey. We always kept an eye on Old Springel’s orchard to see was available, but an even more careful eye out for Old Springel himself. He could be a bit quick with his walking stick and although old, he still had a pretty powerful arm. The feast was washed down with bottles of tap oe well water. Other kids sandwiches always seemed more interesting than your own and a lot of swapping went on. After all if your own garden produced mostly greengages and some one elses raspberries, it was nice to have a

change. Mums gave the kids what they had most of and we weren’t fussy.

After a glorious afternoon spent crawling through the undergrowth, making camps, amusing the tinies by making daisy chains, blowing over grass leaves clamped between your thumbs (remember that?), shooting plantains at each other and generally having a wonderful time with no interferance from any adults for hours, we would wend our grubby way homeward taking it in turns to carry the weary, blackberry stained toddlers. Funnily enough they seldom whinged or cried.

Arriving home we usually were greeted by

‘Good Grief!.... Just look at the state of you!”

But then, a mucky kid is usually a happy kid!

DORSET COUNTY MUSEUM

Launch of Hardy Country Initiative Thursday 6 June 2013 at 7pm

On Thursday 6 June 2013 a major new project promoting the world of Thomas Hardy is being launched.

“Hardy Country” is a brand new initiative from a group made up of Dorset County Museum, The National Trust, Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Thomas Hardy Society, and Dorset County Council. They have been working together to make Hardy Country into an interna-tionally recognised, high quality visitor destination.

The first objective is to provide a firm link between the two Hardy properties (Hardy’s birthplace and Max Gate), Dorset County Museum (which houses the famous ‘Hardy Collection’) and Clouds Hill, former retreat of TE Lawrence. All are locations strongly associated with Hardy, his life and his novels and poetry and they come together here for the first time to make a co-ordinated visitor “offer”.

Accessed by a joint ticket costing just £20 (a saving of £6 on visiting all the locations separately), the project will inspire intellectual, emotional and physical engagement with the Dorset landscape and its cultural herit-age. For the first time, Thomas Hardy will be properly placed within the landscape and historic built environment that surrounded him during his life. Tickets will be on sale at all four locations plus the Dorchester Tour-ist Information Centre from 6 June. More information is available from the website at www.hardycountry.org.

Jon Murden, Director of Dorset County Museum said, “If Hardy Coun-try works well, we will look to develop the offer further by introducing walking and cycling trails and possibly shuttle buses or cycle hire be-tween all the locations to help bring Hardy’s world alive to our visitors.”

For our show we welcome entries from any resident of the parish. We have a great variety of classes including fruit, vegetables, floral and domestic. This year we have a special section for children’s entries that include making a potato man, three gingerbread men, mixed flower display and a pre-school painting competition. More entries means more fun, so do get involved.

On a practical note, it does help us (and you) if you come early to register and stage your exhibits on the morning of the show. There tends to be a bit of a rush as the closing time of 12.00 noon approaches (Being earlier also gives you more time to stage your exhibits).

I look forward to welcoming you all and having a great show!

The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues his tongue-in-cheek letters from ‘Uncle Eustace’… If you would like a copy of our published booklet of Uncle Eustace’s letters, please email us at: [email protected] On why we don’t bother to lock the church

The Rectory St. James the Least My dear Nephew Darren

Since I happened to be in your area last week, I tried to call in at your church, and was sorry to find it was locked and bolted, with surveillance cameras watching me.

We tend to be a little more relaxed about matters of security. The key to the medieval lock was lost some time during Queen Victoria’s reign and never replaced. How someone managed to misplace a foot long piece of cast iron, weighing about 10 pounds is a mystery. If it had fallen out of someone’s pocket, it would certainly have broken their foot. Ever since, no one has bothered with locking the door – which makes me wish our burglars last year had thought of trying it, before wasting so much energy smashing a stained glass window when they visited in the early hours one morning. On the other hand, were the key still in use, I should probably be arrested these days for carrying an offensive weapon.

As with most rural churches, keys which open just about everything in

the village are hidden in various parts of the church. The vestry key is un-der my seat cushion, the organ key under a vase on the altar, the church hall key on top of the hymn book cupboard, and Miss Simpson‘s spare front door key inside the font. I have never been certain whether the latter is there for safety, or as a general invitation. I am sure someone could use-fully produce a book suggesting the many places keys are likely to be found secreted in churches for the use of vergers, flower arrangers, clean-ers – and thieves wanting to save themselves time and effort.

I suspect that the burdened look that many urban clergy wear is not be-

cause they are weighed down with parish troubles, but because they are obliged to carry with them a superfluity of keys needed to negotiate every door in church, hall, school and vicarage. And why is there always one for which no one has any idea what it opens?

The only occasion I have ever thought it would be useful to be able to lock a church is when you have a party of visitors inside. So often, on hearing the words “let us pray” or the start of an appeal for funds, they bolt for the door.

Your loving uncle, Eustace

A Cautionary Tale from Trading Standards In Spring 2012 Dorset Trading Standards received a call from the po-

lice about a gentleman in his 70s who was having some work done on his roof. The gentleman (Mr X) had received a knock on his door from a man who was offering to fit some plastic edging to his roof. Mr X agreed to this work being done. No sooner had they started than the roofer came back to the door and said the wood on the roof was rotten and he could fix it but it would £4500. Fortunately for Mr X a neighbour was concerned and called the police who turned up and arrested the roofer, it turned out he was wanted for crimes elsewhere. Trading standards then employed a surveyor to look at the roof and he confirmed that the wood wasn’t rotten and didn’t need replacing. Mr X had a lucky escape thanks to his neigh-bour and was £4500 better off. There is a piece of law that requires a trader who visits your home to give you a 7 day cooling off period and a notice of right to cancel if the suggested work costs more that £35. If they don’t give you this notice they are breaking the law and can be prosecuted as was the roofer in this case.

We recommend that you do not deal with traders who cold call you and

offer to do work for you. Look out for the Buy With Confidence logo, we check traders so you

don’t have to. Visit the website www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk or call the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 08454 04 05 06.

News from Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service It is estimated that nearly half of people in the UK have been targeted by a scam and that £3.5 billion is lost to scams every year.

Scams are schemes to con people out of their money. Other names for scams include fraud, hoax, con, swindle or cheat. Scams con in a variety of ways such as by post, phone, email, online and sometimes via a knock at the door.

There are hundreds of scams including fake lotteries and prize draws, bogus health cures, dodgy investments schemes, pyramid selling, phishing – to name just a few. These may change as people become aware of them and as scammers attempt to keep one step ahead.

People from all walks of life get conned because scammers are clever and are always on the lookout for dubious new activities. Spot Scams

It could be a scam if: The call, or letter, e-mail or text has come out of the blue. You’ve never heard of the lottery or competition they are talking about

and didn’t buy a ticket. They are asking you to send money in advance. They are telling you that you have to respond quickly so you don’t get

time to think about it or talk to family and friends before you decide. They are telling you to keep it a secret.

Stop Scams Report it. If you have been scammed, or if you think someone has

tried to scam you, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk/contact-us
