STRONGLY MINIMAL

DefinitionT is strongly minimal if every definable set is finite or cofinite.

e.g. acf, vector spaces, successor

Definitiona is in the algebraic closure of B (a ∈ acl(B)) if for some φ(x ,b):|= φ(a,b) with b ∈ B and φ(x ,b) has only finitely many solutions.

Combinatorial Geometry: Matroids

The abstract theory of dimension: vector spaces/fields etc.

DefinitionA closure system is a set G together with a dependence relation

cl : P(G)→ P(G)

satisfying the following axioms.A1. cl(X ) =

⋃{cl(X ′) : X ′ ⊆fin X}

A2. X ⊆ cl(X )A3. cl(cl(X )) = cl(X )

(G, cl) is pregeometry if in addition:A4. If a ∈ cl(Xb) and a 6∈ cl(X ), then b ∈ cl(Xa).

If cl(x) = x the structure is called a geometry.

Steiner systems

A Steiner k system is collection of points and lines (block) such that

1 two points determine a line2 each line has exactly k -points.

We work in a vocabulary with one ternary relation R for collinearity. We say the system is S(2, k ,n) if there are n-points and lines havelength k .

Linear SpacesDefinition (1-sorted)The vocabulary τ contains a single ternary predicate R,interpreted as collinearity.K ∗0 denotes the collection of finite 3-hypergraphs that are linearsystems:

1 R is a predicate of sets (hypergraph)2 Two points determine a line

K ∗ includes infinite linear spaces.

Groupoids and semigroups1 A groupoid (magma) is a set A with binary relation ◦.2 A quasigroup is a groupoid satisfying left and right cancellation

CorollaryIf (M,R) is a strongly minimal linear space for some k , it is a Steinerk -system.

Ab Initio Strongly minimal Steiner Systems

DefinitionA Steiner (2, k , v)-system is a linear system with v points such thateach line has k points.

Theorem (Baldwin-Paolini)[BP20]For each k ≥ 3, there are an uncountable family Tµ of strongly minimal(2, k ,∞) Steiner-systems.

There is no infinite group definable in any Tµ. More strongly,Associativity is forbidden.

Hrushovski construction for linear spaces

K∗0 denotes the collection of finite linear spaces in the vocabularyτ = {R}.A line in a linear space is a maximal R-cliqueL(A), the lines based in A, is the collections of lines in (M,R) thatcontain 2 points from A.

Definition: Paolini’s δ

[Pao21] For A ∈ K∗0, let:

δ(A) = |A| −∑`∈L(A)

(|`| − 2).

K 0 is the A ∈ K ∗0 such that B ⊆ A implies δ(B) ≥ 0.

Mermelstein [Mer13] has independently investigated Hrushovkifunctions based on the cardinality of maximal cliques.

Primitive Extensions and Good Pairs

Definition

Let A,B,C ∈ K0.(1) C is a 0-primitive extension of A if C is minimal with δ(C/A) = 0.

(2) C is good over B ⊆ A if B is minimal contained in A such that C isa 0-primitive extension of B. We call such a B a base.

In Hrushovski’s examples the base is unique. But not in linear spaces.

α is the isomorphism type of ({a,b}, {c}) with R(a,b, c).

Instances of α determine a line in linear spaces.

The µ function

ContextLet U be a collection of functions µ assigning to every isomorphismtype β of a good pair C/B in K 0:

(i) a natural number µ(β) = µ(B,C) ≥ δ(B), if |C − B| ≥ 2;(ii) a number µ(β) ≥ 1, if β = α

Tµ is the theory of a strongly minimal Steiner (µ(α) + 2)-system

If µ(α) = 1, Tµ is the theory of a Steiner triple system, bi-interpretablewith a Steiner quasigroup.

Key features of constructed modelA ≤ M if A ⊆ B ⊆ M implies δ(A/B) ≥ 0

When (K 0,≤) has joint embedding and amalgamation there is uniquecountable generic.

Realization of good pairs1 A good pair A/B well-placed by D in a model M, if B ⊆ D ≤ M and

A is 0-primitive over D.2 For any good pair (A/B), χM(A/B) is the maximal number of

disjoint copies of A over B appearing in M.

If C/B is well-placed by D ≤ M, χM(B,C) = µ(B/C).

Primitive singletonα is the isomorphism class of the good pair ({a,b}, {c}) withR(a,b, c).

IV For µ ∈ U , Kµ is the collection of M ∈ K 0 such thatχM(A,B) ≤ µ(A,B) for every good pair (A,B).

V X is d-closed in M if d(a/X ) = 0 implies a ∈ X (Equivalently, forall finite Y ⊂ M − X , d(Y/X ) > 0.).

Main existence theoremsWhen (K 0,≤) has joint embedding and amalgamation there is uniquecountable generic.

Theorem: Paolini [Pao21]There is a generic model for K 0; it is ω-stable with Morley rank ω.

Theorem (Baldwin-Paolini)[BP20]For any µ ∈ U , there is a generic strongly minimal structure Gµ withtheory Tµ.If µ(α) = k , all lines in any model of Tµ have cardinality k + 2.Thus each model of Tµ is a Steiner k -system and µ(α) is afundamental invariant.

Proof follows Holland’s [Hol99] variant of Hrushovski’s originalargument.New ingredients: choice of amalgamation, analysis of primitives, treatment of good pairs as invariants (e.g. α).

Euclid, Descartes, Hilbert

Euclid used the Archimedean axiom to define proportionality ofsegments.

Descartes used Euclid’s theorem of the 4th proportional to definemultiplication.

Hilbert inverted the procedure to define multiplication (and so interpreta field) in any Desarguesian plane and then define proportionality.

Thus Descartes ‘weakly coordinatizes’ any plane (over ‘Euclidean’subfields of the reals)

Hilbert coordinatizes all Euclidean planes (by Euclidean fields)

2 VARIABLE IDENTITIES

DefinitionA variety is binary if all its equations are 2 variable identities: [Eva82]

DefinitionGiven a (near)field (F ,+, ·,−,0,1) of cardinality q = pn and anelement a ∈ F , define a multiplication ∗ on F by

x ∗ y = y + (x − y)a.

An algebra (A, ∗) satisfying the 2-variable identities of (F , ∗) is ablock algebra over (F , ∗) (a quasigroup).

Motive 1

Key fact: weak coordinatization [Ste64, Eva76]If V is a variety of binary, idempotent algebras and each block of aSteiner system S admits an algebra from V then so does S.

ConsequentlyIf V is a variety of binary, idempotent algebras such that each2-generated algebra has cardinality k , each A ∈ V determines aSteiner k -system. (The 2-generated subalgebras.)And for prime power k , each strongly minimal Steiner k -system admitsa weak coordinatization by V .

Question 1Can this coordinatization be definable in the strongly minimal (M,R)?Is there even a definable binary function?

Forcing a prime power

TheoremIf a k -Steiner system is weakly coordinatized, k is a prime power qn.

Proof: As, if an algebra A is freely generated by every 2-elementsubset, it is immediate that its automorphism group is strictly2-transitive. And as [S61] points out an argument of Burnside [Bur97],[Rob82, Theorem 7.3.1] shows this implies that |A| is a prime power.

Are there any strongly minimal quasigroups (block algebras)?

Strongly minimal block algebras (M,R, ∗)

Theorem: BaldwinFor every prime power q there is a strongly minimal Steiner q-system(M,R) whose theory is interpretable in a strongly minimal blockalgebra (M,R, ∗).

We modify the collection of R-structures Kµ to a collection Kµ′ of(R, ∗) structures so that the generic is a strongly minimal quasigroupthat induces a Steiner system.

Theorem: Baldwin-VerbovskiyBut for k > 3 the coordinatization CAN NOT BE defined in the stronglyminimal (M,R).

In searching for a proof we find a related problem.

Finite Coding

Definition

A finite set F = {a1, . . . ,ak} of tuples from M is said to be coded byS = {s1, . . . , sn} ⊂ M over A if

σ(F ) = F ⇔ σ|S = idS for any σ ∈ aut(M/A).

If dcl∗(I) = ∅, T does not have the finite set property.

ACF: yes; locally modular: no; combinatorial: no (here)

Fact

If T admits weak elimination of imaginaries then T satisfies the finiteset property if and only T admits elimination of imaginaries.

Since every strongly minimal theory has weak elimination ofimaginaries, we have

If a strongly minimal T has no definable binary functions it does notadmit elimination of imaginaries.

Group Action and Definable Closure

Fix I as two independent points in the generic model M of Tµ.

2 groupsLet G{I} be the set of automorphisms of M that fix I setwise and GI bethe set of automorphisms of M that fix I pointwise.

Note that dcl∗(X ) consists of those elements are fixed by GI but not byGX for any X ( I.

symmetric definable closure

The symmetric definable closure of X , sdcl(X), is those a that are fixedby every g ∈ G{X}.b ∈ sdcl∗(X) exactly when b ∈ sdcl(S) but b 6∈ sdcl(U) for any propersubset U of X .

Dual Induction

Lemma

Assume that Tµ satisfies µ(A/B) ≥ 3 for any good pair (A/B), whereδ(B) = 2. For m ≥ 1,

1 dimm: d(E) = 2 for any GI-invariant set E ⊆ Am, which is not asubset of A0.

2 movesm: No Amf ,k is GI-invariant.

Key stepdimm and movesm+1 implies dimm+1.

How µ mattersG{I}-decomposition permits removal of the hypothesis:If δ(B) = 2, then µ(B/C) ≥ 3and elimination of imaginaries still fails.

Theorem

[BV20] Let Tµ be the theory of the basic Hrushovski construction or astrongly minimal Steiner systemLet I = {a,b} be a pair of independent points.

1 sdcl∗(I) = ∅.2 Further, if for any good pair C/B,δ(B) = 2 implies µ(C/B) ≥ 3,then Tµ is generically-discrete (dcl∗(I) = ∅).

Consequently, no such T admits elimination of imaginaries.

In particular the Steiner systems (M,R) do not interpret quasigroups.
