A xiom Brass Quintet from the United States will perform at Shenzhen Concert Hall. Praised for their “high level of musicality and technical abil- ity” and for their “clean, clear and precise sound,” the award-winning quintet has established itself as “one of the major art music groups in brass chamber music.” Internationally recognized for their groundbreaking programming, their repertoire ranges from jazz and Latin music to string quartet transcriptions, as well as original compositions for brass quintet. Axiom Brass’ perfor- mances have captured the hearts and imaginations of their audiences, leading the ensemble to national radio and television appearances as well as concerts around the world. Under the direction of trumpeter Dorival Puccini, the quintet’s other members are tuba player Kevin Har- rison, trumpeter Kris Hammond, trombone player Mary Tyler and horn player Melanie Erena Kjellsen. Puccini is a founding member of the Axiom Brass. His interest in chamber music has led him to contribute over a dozen transcriptions for brass quintet specially written for the Axiom Brass. Axiom’s commitment to education and their blend of virtuosic performances and dynamic teaching have inspired young audiences around the nation, earning the ensemble the 2011 Fischoff Educator Award. More than 100 ancient Guan-yin statues and paintings on loan from Capital Museum in Beijing are on display at

Shenzhen Museum at the newly opened The Wisdom of Achieving Inner Peace exhibition.

The exhibition is divided into Han Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism sec-tions, featuring wood, porcelain and copper-gilt statues of Guanyin, the bod-hisattva of compassion.

The most striking piece is a qingbai (green-white) porcelain statue made in Jingdezhen during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and unearthed in Beijing in 1964. With a beaming and peaceful expression, the Guanyin is folded under a voluminous robe.

Qingbai ware, which is made with a white porcelain body and fi red with a blue-green tinted glaze, is a type of Chinese porcelain that was produced during the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties.
