Capital Habeas interns assist with legal research, investigating factual claims, and drafting habeas petitions and responses.

While each office will have a supervisory attorney to monitor intern assignments and progress in each office, interns will work with one or more AFPDs. Subject to the Defender’s needs, some interns may even collaborate with attorneys from other offices.

While any law student may apply, second-year and (first semester) third-year students generally fare the best. The ACLU of Colorado is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling the promise of equal justice under the law for all Coloradans. Our scope of work is fundamentally defined by one document, the Bill of Rights. The rights and freedoms contained within impact a wide range of issues, including free speech, freedom of religion, due process, privacy and equality for all people under the law. We advocate for members of disenfranchised communities, including people of color, LGBT persons, women, immigrants, low income people, homeless, prisoners, students and the elderly. While we are incorporated as an independent entity, we are also an affiliate of the national American Civil Liberties Union.

Colorado Education Association

1. Extern/Intern—Spring, Summer, or Fall 2018 (#15647)

The Colorado Education Association (“CEA”) is a statewide federation of teacher and educational workers’ labor unions dedicated to advancing the cause of public education. CEA employs a team of six attorneys and two paralegals who work collaboratively to represent individual CEA members from around the state, as well as the labor unions that comprise the CEA. CEA attorneys are trial lawyers whose varied practices take them to all corners of Colorado and to all levels of state and federal court.

Primarily, we represent individual CEA members (i.e. teachers and other non-administrative school employees) in matters arising out of their employment. Practice areas include, but are NOT limited to the following:

- Administrative law – represent teachers and school counselors and nurses in licensing, dismissal or unemployment proceedings;- Appeals – advocate in the Colorado Court of Appeals, Colorado Supreme Court, the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court;- Criminal defense – defend CEA members who are charged with a crime for conduct that arose in the scope of their employment;- Constitutional law – assert clients’ constitutional rights to freedom of speech, expression, assembly, and due process under the state and federal constitutions;

If trial practice interests you, you will have ample opportunities to experience the inside of a courtroom and to sharpen your understanding and skill in the areas of trial preparation, client counseling, witness interviews, and the rules of evidence. If you only took Evidence because it was required and hope never to set foot inside a courtroom, you can experience life as an in-house lawyer, working closely with CEA’s General Counsel to advise the organization on a variety of legal matters.

National Association of Counsel for Children (NACC)

1. Policy and Practice Intern/Extern, Spring, Summer, or Fall 2018 (#15598)

The National Association of Counsel for Children strives to make certain the attorneys representing children and families are well trained and effective. We dedicate ourselves to providing child law advocates with the tools necessary to empower their clients through effective representation.

We also believe that child welfare is best achieved in the legal system by advocates who engage in both case law and policy advocacy. Child welfare advocates must not only represent their clients well each day, but also work to improve the child welfare, juvenile justice, and private custody systems. To that end, we offer a variety of tools and services to empower both experienced attorneys and first-time lay advocates.

NACC is seeking law student interns to support our policy advocacy, attorney training, and law student outreach programs.

WildEarth Guardians1. Extern/Intern Spring, Summer, or Fall 2018 (#15607)

Externship for Credit, or Internship, in Wild Rivers Program.

We envision free-flowing rivers with sufficient flows of high enough water quality to sustain native fish and wildlife. We also envision rivers with healthy native streamside vegetation, with healthy riverside bosques of cottonwoods and willows. We advocate for a river’s endangered fish and wildlife not only because we believe each species has an intrinsic right to exist but also because endangered species can be a surrogate for the needs of the river itself. We aspire for a day in the future when all human communities embrace a stewardship ethic that ensures that we have healthy, living river ecosystems as a foundation of our communities.

We employ a diverse set of strategies to implement our vision, including federal and state litigation, lobbying, restoration, and economic incentives. Untying the Gordian knot that is western water is a complex and complicated endeavor. Sometimes collaborative solutions engaging traditional western water users are necessary, while other times a proverbial stick of dynamite, with legal strategies is the only path to reform archaic institutions unwilling to change.
