Financial publishing is the creation of high-value, specialized content for select audiences, created by a tightly coordinated team of authors and reviewers, often in a global setting. The coordination and scheduling of these products makes heavy demands on the systems normally used to create and manage this content.
Demands that standard offi ce applications – in spite of their familiarity and ease of use - are increasingly unable to satisfy.
Méthode is an ‘industrial-strength’ new-generation publishing solution, originally developed for use in news and media organisations. It is now being adopted by fi nancial publishers who share many publishing requirements with the news media sector.
For fi nancial publishers Méthode goes well beyond the limitations of conventional desktop systems to provide a number of critical functionalities:
Workfl ow, permission & entitlement control – each step in the creation and publication of a document can be made to depend on the satisfaction of a specifi c condition – legal approval, data updates, quality control – using a process that is rigorous but unobtrusive.
Multichannel output – Méthode’s XML format can generate perfectly formatted output in any traditional or digital channel – from printed reports to Web-based presentations and tablet documents.
Integration of data sources – Méthode documents can incorporate data fi elds that are automatically fi lled and updated from external sources – anything from stock indices to disclosure statements. As well as boosting productivity, this mechanism ensures the accuracy and timeliness of the imported content.
Extensibility – Méthode incorporates a set of APIs and ‘hooks’ allowing it to be tightly integrated with other IT systems. Extensive customizability means that its user interfaces can be adapted to suit the working practices of any organization.

The enterprise publishing solution
Méthode brings together on a single integrated platform all of the work functions needed to create and publish high-quality content through multiple channels.
Users create documents using templates already formatted for publication through print Web, tablet etc. They can see WYSIWYG previews of their work in any channel at any time.
Documents are highly modular, allowing concurrent editing – one user can be creating the text, while another is working on the charts and a third is updating the legal content.
Even automated processes, such as an update from an external fi nancial database or feedback from a disclosures system, can take place in parallel with manual authoring and editing.
All editing changes are visible to all users in real time from anywhere in the organisation.
Documents can seamlessly incorporate sections from other documents – with ‘live’ updates in real time.
Where variants are needed in the content of a document - to create versions for different audiences - these can be generated as variations within a single base fi le, greatly simplifying version control and archiving.
Modular documents
A single Méthode document can consist of several components, each of which may be worked on by different individuals or teams.
Some components may be shared between documents. All content may be updated in real time until ‘frozen’ prior to publication.

Multi-channel, multi-edition output
Once a document hs been created, its various elements can be combined and formatted - completely automatically - to generate different renderings for different channels and platforms
A report may be created initially as a print document and is simultaneously available as a brief synopsis on the Web with a link to a downloadable PDF version that can also be viewed on tablet platforms or printed out.

Precision and productivity
As each document travels through the Méthode workfl ow, it is governed by a precise specifi cation of which users or groups may access the document and which operations they may perform. These ‘entitlements’ change as the document moves from initial creation to fi nal publication. They ensure that at each stage only authorized users may carry out permitted actions.
The workfl ow path may also be confi gured to include ‘checkpoints’ – stages beyond which the document may not proceed until a given operation has been performed – a legal check or a data update.
These workfl ow mechanisms provide an unobtrusive way of ensuring that all published output complies with established procedures. At the same time they streamline teamwork processes: workfl ow transitions trigger automatic notifi cations of documents requiring action, tasks to be carried out, materials ready for use.
All of the workfl ow tools and processes can be linked with actions to integrated systems, so that complex interactions of Méthode and its workfl ow can be orchestrated within the enterprise.
A system of color-coded icons and tags allows the ‘state of play’ in any given area to be assessed at a glance. For each object a complete ‘audit trail’ is recorded and previous versions can be viewed and restored with a click of the mouse, providing a safeguard against accidental corruption or erasure.
Assigning tasks and tracking progress
Users are automatically notified of contents requiring their attention. Clicking on a task assignment opens the associated document.
Color coding allows coordinators to view all task completion statuses. Statistics are collected on all workflow processes and may be viewed in customized reports.

Workflow configuration
The workflow path of a document may be precisely configured, from initial creation, through a number of checks and approval stages to final publication.
Security and control
Workflow configuration allows entitlements to be fine-tuned to ensure that users comply with established procedures at each stage of the process.
A complete audit trail is kept of all changes and operations, allowing authoring and editing to be closely monitored and supervised.

Dynamic content inclusion
The modular nature of Méthode documents allows them to incorporate dynamic content from external sources. These may include live data fi elds displaying stock indices or the output from fi nancial models, continuously updated up to the moment of publication.
Where precise wording is essential – for company names or legislation, for example – an auto-complete mechanism may be confi gured. Typing the fi rst few letters of the phrase brings up a menu of suggestions from which the user can choose the exact wording.
Méthode also allows the inclusion of content from specialised graphical applications (such as Microsoft ExcelTM) with automatic updating within the document if the external object changes. Such changes will also dynamically update all established output channels for that content, saving much re-work and potential for loss of synchronization when manual copy/paste is utilized.
As well as making document creation faster and easier, these functions ensure that the published output is accurate and up to date.
Dynamic object linking
Tables and charts from Excel can be incorporated in documents and subsequently updated to reflect changes in the external object.

Auto-completion
Typing the first few letters of a name opens a menu of suggested candidates. Clicking on an item inserts it into the text.

A platform to build on
An important aspect of the value Méthode can add lies in its extensibility and customizability.
Based as it is on standard technologies (XML, CSS and SVG in the print channel) interfacing Méthode with other parts of the corporate IT infrastructure and external data sources is straightforward. Méthode incorporates many APIs and ‘hooks’ to facilitate this process.
At the same time the user interface functions can be extensively customized to create an ergonomic workspace to maximise user comfort and productivity.
Workfl ow processes that ensure each user fi nds the materials and information they need at their fi ngertips, together with automatic notifi cations and controls, minimise transaction stress and allow users to concentrate fully on the quality of their content.
Easy interoperability
Multiple APIs facilitate integration of Méthode with other components of the IT infrastructure, as well as other data sources and output systems.

User comfort and productivity
Extensive use of customizable slideaway panels puts resources within easy reach while creating a clean, uncluttered workspace.
Once they have optimized their workspace arrangement, users can save the settings. Méthode will then always open with the saved configuration.
