Message from the Head of Department

The word education is drawn from the Latin word educere, meaning “to lead forth”. The process of education is to rouse and bring forth the skills inherent in a student and nurture them to the point of active functionality in the chosen field of study.

In my teaching experience, I find that pre-university students generally tend to view education as merely a means to an end. “Tell me what I need to learn so I can repeat it to you in an exam, thus earning me the qualifications to achieve what I want.” It is radically different now in a university setting. It is no longer ingestion and regurgitation. University students are adults who have chosen a particular field in which to develop their talents. Out of the many possibilities available, they choose a particular field because they realise it is what they are inclined to do. They want to acquire the skills to grow the passion within them. This is the seed from which will grow a strong and bountiful tree, nurtured by the fertile environment and rich soil of the university. This is the true meaning of educere – because the inherent talents are brought forth from an individual who is actively seeking knowledge in that particular field of interest.

Education is more than achieving paper qualifications solely to fit into a future comfortable job in a faceless corporation. Students are not commodities to be churned out of an industrial assembly line to fit into a larger machine. Instead, they are individuals with passion, talents and intelligence. Where do you see yourself in five years' time? Will you be just another salaried person, waking up early, getting dressed in strange clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are paying loan instalments on – just to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house or apartment you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it?

At HELP, I believe that university education is much more than the acquisition of job-specific knowledge. As human beings we are not programmable computer components. Education also encompasses the development of communication skills, personality, curiosity, attitudes and creativity. Far more important than providing mere information is to spark a passionate interest that will help students lead truly meaningful lives and bring value to the community of which they are a part. An excellent university experience will help students learn who they are, to discover a larger purpose for their lives and eventually to live as better human beings.

1 Diploma in BusinessKPT/JPS(A6487)01/15

The Diploma in Business is a 2-year HELP University program that prepares students for admission into the second year of business related degree programs at internationally recognised universities. It is widely accepted by Australian, British and new Zealand universities as being equivalent to their first year course of studies.

This program has been structured and developed in consultation with, and moderated by, foreign universities to ensure that it is of an acceptable international standard.

The curriculum has been designed to provide students with a sound background in accounting, finance, marketing, management and related business subjects. Apart from preparing students for entry into business degree programs, the Diploma in Business adequately prepares students for the job market as well.

On completion of this program, graduates will have acquired the knowledge and practical skills in business which will enhance their competency to complete their task assignments.

2 Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) KPT/JPS(A10833)10/14

Accounting is concerned with the measurement, reporting and evaluation of information, including computerised information, which assists in the management of resources in business entities and government organisations.

This program prepares students to become professional accountants. It covers theoretical and conceptual accounting matters combined with the basic accounting skills needed to make graduates employable.

The curriculum has been designed to satisfy the requirements of professional accounting bodies like CPA Australia, ACCA, ICAEW, MICPA, CIMA, MIA and many others where full exemptions can be obtained. At the same time, the curriculum provides students with a broad-based education, thus ensuring success in the highly competitive work environment.

Furthermore, top accounting professionals from the Big 5 accounting firms are invited to participate in teaching as adjunct staff. They will bring real world perspectives into the classroom setting.

Entrepreneurship creates value and contributes to all-round progress. It is an integrating discipline that draws on knowledge and skills developed in a variety of areas. Entrepreneurial endeavours are successful when they identify and assess opportunities, and enable action to be taken to pursue the opportunities.

The program’s curriculum blends the traditional components of a management education with the study of the content, skill, and sensitivity areas that uniquely define entrepreneurship. Through a combination of academic and clinical experiences, students will develop an appreciation and understanding of the entrepreneurial process.

On completion of the program, graduates will understand the motivations, behaviour and strategies necessary to create, implement and sustain new ideas and ventures.

4 Bachelor of Business (Finance) (Hons) KPT/JPS(A5951)10/14

Finance is concerned with the study of financial instruments, institutions, markets and systems. It involves the study of financial decision making under uncertainty, and has applications in many fields including banking, financial consulting and planning, funds management, merchant banking, stock broking and treasury.

This program provides rigorous training in the theory and application of finance. The program involves a core in mainstream finance supplemented with studies in related quantitative techniques and methodologies, economics and management.

On completion of this program, graduates will understand:• how corporations make financial decisions• how individual investors select and manage their

investment opportunities and portfolios• the intricacies of derivative securities• the management of the financial services industry

The realisation of the importance of proper human resource management has been reflected in the hiring of people with specialised skills in personnel management, compensation, labour relations, training and management development, and the use of organisational development consultants.

This program is designed to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the three management functions that have become most critical in modern organisations: personnel management, industrial relations and organisational behaviour. It emphasises both practical and conceptual skills to enable students to work in all areas of human resource management in both the public and private sectors.

The program aims to provide a broad understanding and appreciation of organisations as well as skills in basic human resource management functions.

On completion of the program, graduates should be able to help shape an organisation or business through staff planning, job analysis and design, appraisal of staff performance and assessment of training needs.

This program is designed for students who wish to specialise in courses that lead to a career in international business management. The program provides a broad foundation in business in addition to specialised studies in international management and international marketing.

On completion of the program, graduates will have learnt international negotiation and leadership skills. Graduates will also have learnt how to generate global and local creative strategies, as well as the skills to effectively implement them.

With greater competition in markets arising from deregulation, technological change and globalisation, an understanding of marketing is becoming increasingly crucial for professionals in both private and government business areas. In a more competitive world, graduates

with the ability to add value to products and services have an edge over others.

This program is designed to provide students with a sound background in business, together with an understanding of marketing’s role within and between organisations.

On completion of the program, graduates will have acquired decision-making skills and be innovative in their approach to business problems and situations. Furthermore, the program develops critical thinking and communication skills so that graduates may deal effectively with the continually changing business environment.

To achieve these aims, the program integrates the development of practical skills and knowledge with a strong emphasis on understanding current theories and the latest research.

This program will appeal to students wishing to obtain a general education in the disciplines which underlie the theory and practice of management. The degree aims to cover the analysis of a specific set of topics and also to teach an approach to logical analysis of social and individual decision-making.

On completion of the program, graduates will be able to look analytically and critically at management issues, develop critical skills for a wide range of real world business and professional situations, and be prepared for a career in business administration and management.

The Bachelor of Economics (Hons) is an excellent starting point for a career in the accounting, finance and banking professions. On completion of the program, graduates will have gained an understanding of the fundamental issues, debates and problems related to the operation of financial systems at both the micro and macro levels, in the context of national and global economies. Hospitality management encompasses the vibrant and varied worlds of hotel, restaurant and resort management and more. Graduates find employment in hotels, casinos, restaurants, conventions and events management companies. This major delves into international hotel operations management, technological applications in hospitality management and large scale services management as well as small business operations. As the hotel and hospitality industry moves increasingly from a skill-based to a knowledge-based industry, higher learning has become increasingly critical to opening career doors and helping managers to be fully attuned to the culture, services and competitive aspects of the sector.

12 Credit Transfer to the University of Queensland

The University of Queensland (Australian University of the Year 1998) is one of Australia's premier learning and research institutions. It is the oldest university in Queensland and has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry. The University is a founding member of the national Group of Eight, an alliance of research-strong "sandstone" universities committed to ensuring that Australia has higher education institutions which are genuinely world class. It belongs also to the global Universitas 21 alliance, which aims to enhance the quality of university outcomes through international benchmarking and via a joint venture e-learning project with The Thomson Corporation.

After studying at HELP, students have the option of transferring to the Bachelor of Business Management, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Economics programs at the University of Queensland under an exclusive credit transfer arrangement. Terms and conditions apply.

Dr Kelvin Tan Jui Kengformer student of foon Yew High School, Johor Bahru, Kelvin completed his Diploma in Business at HeLP with Distinction. He completed his Bachelor of commerce with Honours, majoring in accounting & finance, and was awarded the Dean’s commendation for achievement at the university of Queensland for two consecutive years. Kelvin was one of the first students from HeLP to gain his PhD at uQ Business School and he has won a Dean’s award for Research Higher Degree excellence. He is now a full-time lecturer in finance at uQ Business School with research interests including capital structure, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. Kelvin is a recipient of the award for excellence in teaching in 2013.

Professional Recognition

Certified Practising Accountants (CPA)AustraliaStudents who have completed the HELP University Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) are eligible to apply to become associate members of CPA Australia where they can do the CPA program which consists of 6 subjects. After completion of the CPA program and with 3-4 years of relevant working experience, they can apply for membership of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.

Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA)The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA) grants maximum exemptions to graduates of the HELP University Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) and Bachelor of Business (Finance) (Hons). Graduates of these 2 programs are only required to complete the final stage of the MAICSA International Qualifying Scheme (IQS) program (by examination) which comprises 4 subjects.

Graduates of the other HELP University Bachelor of Business in Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management and International Business (Hons) are required to complete the MAICSA International Qualifying Scheme (IQS) 1 & 2 which comprises 8 subjects in total.

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)Students who have completed the HELP Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) are eligible for a maximum exemption of 9 subjects out of 14 subjects from the ACCA.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)Students who have completed the HELP Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) are eligible for a maximum exemption of 8 subjects out of 15 subjects from the ICAEW.

Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA)Students who have completed the HELP University Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hons) program are eligible to sit for the MIA Qualifying Examination (QE) which consists of 4 papers.

Upon completion of 4 papers with 3-4 years’ relevant working experience, students can apply for membership of the MIA. The MIA’s QE is the third and final route to gain admission into the MIA, after which they are officially recognised as Chartered Accountants.

Tan Hoon LanFormer student of Chung Hwa High School Muar. Hoon Lan scored 7 As in her UEC examination and received a full scholarship from HELP to

pursue her Bachelor of Business from Charles Sturt University, Australia at HELP. After obtaining excellent results in the first two years of her studies, she was offered another full scholarship to complete her degree (majoring in Accounting and Finance) at the University of Queensland, Australia. She excelled further when she became a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society – the world’s premier collegiate honour society which recognises outstanding academic achievement among university graduates – membership of which is only by invitation.

Christopher Woo Kit LiangFormer student of SMK Damansara Jaya PJ. Completed his Foundation in Arts with 3 High Distinctions and 6 Distinctions in 2006 at

Jeremy Ong Wei LiamFormer student of Methodist Boys Secondary School Kuala Lumpur. Completed the Bachelor of Business Year 1 & Year 2 at HELP, and

then transferred to the University of Queensland to complete his Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Finance. Jeremy started his career with the GE Financial Management Program (FMP) in August 2002 and completed assignments with Aircraft Engines and Corporate Learning Services in Malaysia, Singapore, USA and China. Since then, Jeremy has been promoted a few times in the GE Group and he is now the Asia Supply-Chain Finance Leader for Asia Pacific of GE Oil & Gas (Vetco Gray).

Foo Pao YauFormer student of Raffles Junior College, Singapore, Pao Yau obtained 4 As in the A-Levels and 7 As in the O-Levels. Prior to joining HELP, Pao Yau won the ASEAn Pre-University Scholarship and was a member of the Top 5 Cheerleading Teams in Singapore. She was awarded the HELP-CSU scholarship and

subsequently won a scholarship from the top-rated Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) worth HK$120,000 per year to complete 3 years of study there. Pao Yau worked as an intern with one of the editors of FinanceAisa, Steven Irvine, on the annual edition of Asia’s 100 Richest Families, and her name is credited next to his in the annual survey.
