In its seventh edition, the Creative Forum aims to create artistic areas where elements of
innovation and training are integrated and embodied in various theatrical performances; and
where dialogue with all its liveliness comes along with translation and publication. The
integration of these elements is not intended to arrange them in spatial and temporal contexts,
just to accomplish the art work, but rather to create a model of knowledge and creativity that
can touch the hearts of artists and spectators, transcending language borders, and cultural
specificity, to the prospects of belief in diversity as a life necessity, enhancement of critical
thinking, and seeking to change the customary real life. In order to achieve these goals, the
Creative Forum work team has worked to design and implement the following programs:
It took place through 25 performances, with the participation of 24 European and
Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France,
Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Netherlands, Palestine, Poland,
Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, United Kingdom.
The number of troupes who have applied to participate in the Creative Forum reached 82
troupes with a variety of works including plays, dramatic shows and dancing performances.
The Jury Committee has chosen 25 performances out of the countries mentioned above.

Meet the Artists: A pilot Project: This year the Creative Forum has witnessed a remarkable turnout of spectators, especially in
the age group 20-30 years old, both males and females. Last year, we detected the spectators'
desire to have meetings with the artists after the shows to discuss the various themes and
theatrical styles that had been presented. Therefore, this year we came up with the "Meet the
Artists" program, for which we have devoted two hours on the morning following the shows.
This has attracted a huge audience. Accordingly, we had to register the names of participants
one night before the meeting, to arrange entry, and to establish a genuine dialogue between
artists and spectators. This program has demonstrated the importance of dialogue and the
desire to interact with the other, and the wish to understand their culture. So we are now
discussing ways to support this program next year.

This year we experienced the concept of learning through apprenticeship, which is one way to
learn practically where experience and knowledge is spontaneously passed on from an
experienced trainer to another who is less experienced; this in addition to structured meetings
for both the experienced and their less experienced colleague/assistant. In light of this program,
the Creative Forum has been testing this idea of pairing by teaming up a young assistant trainer
with an experienced trainer, provided that they are able to pass on their experience and make
use of it. This experiment has been evaluated by both the experienced and less experienced
partners, and the evaluation has inspired ideas to make the necessary arrangement for this
apprenticeship program next year. The program has included 8 pairs in the fields of training
and education and they represent the following institutions:
• Faculty of Arts, Theatre Department, Alexandria University (2 apprentices)
• Higher Institute for Theatre Arts- Academy of Arts (2 apprentices)
• Lycee Theater- Artistic House for Theater, Ministry of Culture (2 apprentices)
• Association for Educational and Cultural Development, The Jesuit Cairo in
(1 apprentices)
• Jesuit and Frere Association in Minya (1 apprentice)

We have established a dialogue between two generations, in order to overcome misconceptions
about the other, and see the self in its real size, and to go beyond the so-called constants. We
have a dialogue to look for multiple perspectives, in order to arrive to a possible form for the
freedom of human expression.

We have tried this time to use the "narration" approach to see our similarities and differences,
with no need for any presumptions. We need life experience that we get when we talk about
our experiences, and hear about those of the other. We try though dialogue to minimize pride
resulting from the fear of the Other. We try to preserve life values because if wasted, there will
be nothing left to talk about. This was asserted by the Dialogue Program that consisted of the
following themes:
First Session: Perception of the Other: How each generation perceives the Other?: "Real
Stories"
Second Session: Milestones: Past Achievements and Future Expectations: "Possible and
Impossible stories."
In this program, 40 young and elder participants have taken part in the presence of many critics,
researchers and trainers in different theatrical fields. The discussions in both axes lasted about 6 hours.

:Theatrical Writing Today in Switzerland
Friedrich DürrenmattChildren and Grandchildren of
Within the framework of the Dialogue Program, and taking on the same goal with new
approaches, the Creative Forum has established an educational artistic dialogue about
Theatrical Writing Today in Switzerland: Children and Grandchildren of Friedrich Dürrenmatt,
through a panel discussion led by the Swiss director and dramatist "Eric Altorfer". In the
presence of 50 students, researchers and artists in the theatrical field, this discussion has shown
the specialty of theatrical writing in the Swiss theatre, introducing its approaches and styles as
a multi-lingual theatre that takes the idea of political and ethnic pluralism as its cultural basis.
The Dialogue Program has shown the importance of updating the students' and young theatre
makers knowledge with the latest that takes place in the world. In Egypt, translation has been
detained in the cultural revolutionary phase of the sixties and its consequences; therefore, there
has no longer been a real translation movement since the mid-eighties, where knowledge
paused at that stage. The majority does not know about the Swiss theatre except Max Frisch
and Friedrich Dürrenment, who were both born in the past century and died in the early
nineties.

“Braids” (Arab Women Playwrights from the Mediterranean)
This year the Creative Forum threw the light on the female theatre, through the " Arab Women
Playwrights from the Mediterranean" which aims at strengthening freedom of expression in the
feminist theatre and enhancing its effectiveness; and wide-spreading it by translating it into
Arabic and English. A bilingualism that aims at introducing the reader and the theatrical artist,
both locally and globally, to the issues presented by the feminist theatre as this is considered
one problem of expression, and that of ability to analyze spaces of creativity in conflict with
everyday reality.
Through this program we have discovered a new generation of female playwrights, and
therefore, other spaces, even other sources and feelings that represent the conscience of the
Arab female playwright.

“Exercises in Freedom”
In addition to what was mentioned above about the Publication Program, a book entitled
"Exercises in Freedom " that tracks the Creative Forum philosophy and influence through the
past six editions was published. It was edited by the critic Guirguis Shoukry, who has tracked
the effects of the Creative Forum throughout its six editions within the fields of theatrical
performance, and programs of dialogue, training and publication. The book was also translated
into English to facilitate its circulation among the European readers, as well as the Arabs.
