INTRODUCTION

Page 20: final PPT

1. You become a member of the elite PSA Leader’ Association, Australia consisting of all the Private Schools. The Student Policies & Student Conduct Bill also falls under the LA’ arm.

2. You automatically become a community representative.

3. You will become part of a team of people that will impart better knowledge for other lesser known schools in Perth and nearby towns

4. You will also be visiting foreign countries to become brand ambassadors.

5. A privilege and an honor.

Becoming a leader at Wesley College means…

Page 21: final PPT

SelectionFor each Private School, you are to have by law (PSA League)- One School Captain- One School/Boarding Representative Council (S.R.C/B.R.C) Chairman- One School Vice Captain- Eight Executive Prefects for the Executive Prefect Committee- Fifteen School Prefects- Total - 26 students to be selected from 110 year 11s elected by over 1200 students

Process- Entire student body goes into voting by August (Candidates are all from Year 11 only and

must have been in that particular school since Year 8) - Names of the top 60 candidates is drafted by September, all 60 student candidates are

nominated and for the annual Leadership Training Program held for two months in Sydney, before the academic year begins.

- In Sydney, after meeting over 2700 candidates, we all vote for other schools barring ours. - After arriving back in Perth somewhere in January mid week, only 26 names are announced

over a late lunch, the 26 boys are told of their duties and respectable offices. - We are required to stay in School till February first week, while our parents are being asked

to attend our prefect ship dinner (where previous prefects officially hands over the entire school to the new School Captain, Vice Captain and Chairman)

Page 22: final PPT

What kind of leaders where we?

The widely acclaimed open door policy This was a pilot project, one of our first amendment towards the ‘closed door’ policy

that was used previously. It worked wonders that till today 2009, other schools are still trying hard to adopt the model. Interaction between students and teachers increased, productivity was recognized academically and also in other extra curriculum activities such as music, drama and outside school participation.

Building the ‘Wall’ A program based on the Relationship Leadership, where interpersonal relations

where emphasized greatly to reduced negativity among the student body, in crease the culture and race awareness. Wesley had a 44% overseas/international student population

2003

Page 23: final PPT

What Kind of Leaders were we?

Situational Leadership There where periods in which a particular situation needed a certain method of

approach. Example: racial discrimination/language barrier/post M02. The expulsion of a particular student for breaching school policies was also a long drawn court battle with his parents suing the school but later it was cancelled after the court rubbished its claim

Leader – Member Exchange Theory (LMX) We strongly believed that in order for the school to achieve its yearly goals, we needed

to support various departments that needed to do so. Certain Sporting Cups where excessive training programs was required, schedules where modified to adapt, special academic tutors where allocated for the participating students. Various International / Domestic Trips where coordinated with our sister school, Phenros College. The non-TEE Curriculum was also reworked in 2003 with the exclusion of various subjects. All this we depended on the feedback from the student body and parent committee

Page 24: final PPT

Transformational, Charismatic and Visionary (We were Dreamers) We overhauled the entire SRC/BRC for all eight PSA schools in WA. We introduced the ‘open door policy’

into the system. We within the capacity of the Captain and the SRC/BRC Chairman, we can recommended to the School committee the immediate termination of a student/s enrollment and further bar him from applying to any PSA School for the next six months. We choose to implement the tutor system where a junior can approach his senior at anytime and ask for his council, with this system we finally decided that it would be best to have a staff as tutors so we divided the entire middle school and senior school into little groups with leaders and tutors, here they can voice their issues and concern. More importantly we got the new Science Block (Kefford Wing), a project which was with held for over three years the new Science Block was built on a total budget of AUD $6 million dollars. More over we seem to have inspired the present Year 11s that during their time they got two new Boarding Houses with a common reception area and office. Year 12s still get to stay in the Wesley Houses, this was suppose to be ban after 2003 but they still are very much there.

Shared Leadership Finally, I would like to point out that all these achievements would have never been possible if not with the

help of the other 8 executive prefects, those 15 school prefects, and more importantly the senior school staff and all the Yr12s Parents inputs that actually guided us all through the bad times and the good times. To all the Year 12s who would actually feed us information and would actually recommend us our next steps over lunch and dinner because we all believed in one thing the it does not matter what your designation is; all year 12s of the 2003 batch were captains and champions, for it was in 2003 that we lost so much and won the most.
