  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

Our new model of emergency care is being hailed nationally by NHS leaders

    Why choose Northumbria Healthcare?

Do you want to make a real difference working in the NHS? Are you fully committed to delivering the best outcomes for your patients and putting their needs at the heart of everything you do? Do you want to work with one of the best clinically-led organisations in England?

If the answer is yes then Northumbria Healthcare is the place for you and now is a very exciting time to join us.

We are recognised nationally for providing some of the very best health services in the country, ensuring our patients across North Tyneside and Northumberland experience the highest quality of care both in hospital, in the community and in their own homes.

We were recently named as Provider Trust of the Year 2013 at the prestigious national Health Service Journal (HSJ) Awards where we were recognised for our commitment to listening to, and acting on, the feedback of patients and relatives.

As we continue towards the acquisition of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, our vision is to ensure that people needing our services across the north of England from the east to the west coast experience the highest possible standards of safe, compassionate care.

To do this, we need the right people, with the right values who really care about putting patients first.

This is your opportunity to become part of an organisation that places clinical leadership and high quality patient care at the very heart of everything we do, everything we say and every action we take from the board to the ward.

Our staff tell us we are a great place to work, our patients tell us they experience great care and our stakeholders tell us they feel well informed and assured of our strong corporate governance. We are very proud of our achievements and the exceptional care we deliver day in, day out, for our patients and we recognise, without doubt, that it is our people who are at the heart of our success.

A word from the chief executive

    Dear applicant,

Thank you for expressing an interest in building your career with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

At Northumbria we want our patients and their families to feel they have made the right decision in choosing us for their care. This means making sure patients have the best possible clinical outcomes but also the best possible experience and are treated with the utmost dignity and respect during their stay with us.

This is the minimum that we expect for our patients but in order to do this, we need the right people who share our values and who are passionate about putting patients first.

We recruit our staff based on values, attitudes and behaviours, as well as clinical expertise and invest heavily in nurturing our people which means leaders are born at all levels of our organisation. Our aim is to empower people to be the very best they can be and putting patients first is a core focus for all our employees, at all times.

Above all, we want our people to work together and be inspired to go the extra mile - to make and each and every one of our patients feel welcome and that their care and personal story is important to us.

We also place great emphasis on listening to our frontline teams and empowering our people to own quality improvements with support from the very top of the organisation, regardless of their role or position.

Quality, safety and compassion are at the heart of everything we do and something we expect of every new recruit.

I hope after reading the enclosed information, you will be enthused and inspired to help us build a caring future to the populations we serve in North Tyneside, Northumberland and, in the future, North Cumbria.

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

    About Northumbria Healthcare

We have been a foundation trust since 2006 and have an exciting programme of developments planned within the next few years including the opening of the first dedicated specialist emergency care hospital in the country in 2015.

    Our performance

We are widely recognised as one of the highest performing NHS foundation trusts in England and were recently named as a site of best practice in the Department of Healths response to the Francis Inquiry (published in 2013 following the failings in care at Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust).

We take great pride in creating a positive culture where our staff are fully supported to thrive and continuously improve. Our commitment to quality is demonstrated in many key achievements:

Being named as Provider Trust of the Year at the HSJ Awards 2013.

Being named in the CHKS top 40 performing trusts for the sixth consecutive year.

Being rated in the top ten trusts in the country for the third consecutive year for providing a top quality experience of care for our cancer patients.

Achieving an excellent rating for food, privacy and dignity in the annual patient environment assessment.

85 per cent of our staff feel satisfied with the quality of care they deliver and would recommend Northumbria Healthcare as a place to work or receive treatment.

Being named among the best in the NHS for timely emergency surgery for hip fracture patients in North Tyneside and Wansbeck.

Recognised as award winners for the fourth consecutive year by the Patient Experience Network.

Recognised in the top 15 per cent of all NHS trusts in England in the national inpatient survey which asked patients about the quality of their care and treatment, and information and support given when leaving hospital.

Patients voting us as being the best in the region and among the top five NHS trusts in the country for the care they have received in the most recent national outpatient survey.

Achieving the highest possible safety rating for our maternity services.

    Our locations

We currently employ over 9000 hospital and community-based staff and cover one of the largest geographic areas of any NHS organisation in England, providing care to over 500,000 people in North Tyneside and Northumberland. Our teams deliver hospital, community health and adult social care services in Northumberland and hospital and community health services in North Tyneside. Most of the population we serve lives in the more urban south east corner of a largely rural area which stretches from the River Tyne to the River Tweed, a distance of 65 miles.

We manage three main busy acute hospitals in Hexham, North Tyneside and Wansbeck and run seven smaller community hospitals and services in Alnwick, Berwick, Blyth, Haltwhistle, Morpeth, Rothbury and Wallsend.

As part of an ambitious 200 million programme of investment, all of our facilities are benefitting from ongoing re-development to provide modern state-of-the-art environments fit for delivering 21st century healthcare.

Following the acquisition of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust, our services will span from the North East coast to the Cumbrian border in the west.

    Our hospital sites:

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

    Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

Work is underway on the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, which will be the first of its kind in England to have A&E consultants on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with specialist consultants covering all the main clinical conditions also available 24/7.

Medical evidence shows that having the right specialist on hand to treat very seriously ill or injured patients saves lives and improves recovery. Clinicians and senior management at Northumbria Healthcare have been commended nationally for their approach to developing this new clinical model for specialist emergency care.

Due to open in 2015, our new hospital will have a state-of-the art A&E department, admission and inpatient wards, hi-tech diagnostics and critical care, a short stay paediatric facility, as well as a consultant-led maternity unit with a co-located midwifery-led birthing centre. The wards are arranged around a central nurses station which will improve the ability of staff to observe patients and deliver high quality care.

When our new hospital in Cramlington opens, it means we will be able to separate our emergency care from our planned elective care. We know this will bring many benefits for our patients across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

    Improvements at our general hospitals

Once open, our new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital will free up space to deliver further improvements at our general hospital sites.

In North Tyneside and Wansbeck we are planning to refurbish wards to provide more single rooms and bathrooms giving patients more space and greater privacy and dignity when choosing Northumbria for their planned inpatient care. A major refurbishment of the A&E department at Wansbeck General Hospital has already taken place and specialist ambulatory care units have recently opened at all three general hospitals to help relieve pressure on A&E teams and ensure patients get the best care.

At Hexham General Hospital we are looking to improve services for the elderly by delivering more care in patients homes as well as nursing and care homes. We are already developing more flexible and integrated ways of working such as having our consultants doing ward rounds outside of the traditional hospital setting. Over 80% of our beds at Hexham are provided in single rooms with en-suite facilities providing the utmost privacy and dignity, with many patients from across the region choosing Hexham for their planned operations.

    Redevelopment of community hospitals

In Berwick, we are planning to rebuild the existing community hospital, Berwick Infirmary. Having engaged with the local community, we are now moving forward with plans to rebuild a new state-of-the-art health facility on the existing town centre site.

In Haltwhistle, we are working in partnership with Northumberland County Council on an integrated health and social care scheme that involves replacing Haltwhistle War Memorial Hospital with a new purpose built healthcare facility combining social care. The development will have 15 hospital beds providing rehabilitation, physiotherapy and occupational therapy facilities. There will be 12 extra care flats with 24-hour support for tenants. During demolition of the existing hospital and construction of the new facility, inpatient services at Haltwhistle are being provided from Hexham General Hospital.

In Morpeth, a new state-of-the-art 18 million NHS centre has now opened to replace the old Morpeth Cottage Hospital and also accommodates two local GP practices. The new Morpeth NHS Centre provides many of our services including outpatient, x-ray, podiatry, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, community nursing, midwifery dental and child health services. The trust also runs a dedicated inpatient elderly care and rehabilitation facility at the Whalton Unit in Morpeth.

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

    Acquisition of North Cumbria

Given our strong record of clinical and financial performance and unique expertise in delivering high quality care to dispersed rural communities, we were chosen as the preferred acquisition partner for North Cumbria in February 2012.

We are continuing to move through the necessary regulatory process for the acquisition of North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust and were recently named by the Department of Health as one of the countrys very best NHS trusts and the official partner organisation to help North Cumbria deliver on its required safety and quality improvements.

Quality, safety and compassion are at the heart of everything

we do and something we expect of every new recruit

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

Our staff at the Morpeth NHS Centre which opened

    in May 2013

    Integrated care

Our community teams provide NHS care outside of our hospitals, this can be delivered at home, from a GP practice, in a primary care centre, and, for children, some services are provided in schools. This includes services such as community and district nursing, health visiting, rehabilitation, public health and sexual health services.

We also provide adult social care services in Northumberland to support people who need help to live independently at home. Theseservices are provided, following an assessment, to those who are disabled or have ill health. This includes services such as day care, equipment services, home adaptation, occupational therapy and support for carers.

We pride ourselves on providing joined up care for patients and giving people the support they need to return home after a stay in hospital with us. We work very closely and have strong relationships with local GPs and have a positive partnership approach to delivering seamless care for patients.

    Clinical leadership and development

As part of our pursuit of excellence, we have introduced a clinically-based management structure to ensure patient care and medical interests always drive decision-making. Our consultant body is both cohesive and innovative and a number of senior clinicians are prominent nationally.

Our wards are managed by experienced nurses who are appointed in ward manager roles to provide leadership and guidance to the nursing team, with senior nursing matrons overseeing specialist areas such as orthopaedics, general surgery, elderly care and emergency care.

Our organisation is structured into five business units each of which is led by senior doctor or nurse who reports directly to the senior management team and board of directors and have a direct influence in all decision making.

We want our people to thrive at Northumbria Healthcare and we provide a supportive learning environment where staff can excel in their roles with the opportunity for development and progression.

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

    Academic teaching and developments

Northumbria Healthcare is affiliated to the University of Newcastle and provides a substantial amount of teaching to medical students throughout the new curriculum. Our teaching commitment has increased substantially, with the expansion of undergraduate medical student numbers from 201 to 340 per year. We are also the lead trust for the Northumbria Division of the Faculty of Medicine at Newcastle University and one of four base units coordinating, directing and developing teaching of students.

Every year around 70 students spend their entire stage 3 within the Northumbria Division and spend time with us. Undergraduate teaching for student selected modules in stage 4 and final year students already takes place throughout the trust.

    Our education centres

We are passionate about education and have dedicated centres at all three of our general hospital sites with libraries, IT suites and state-of-the-art audio-visual facilities in our lecture theatres at North Tyneside and Wansbeck. Additional seminar rooms and classrooms are also available and the trusts computer network is linked directly into the university academic network.

A full range of computer software is available and the newly established trust network also provides access to online resources 24 hours a day. Our operating theatres also have the latest digital equipment so that we can train our surgeons remotely as procedures are taking place.

    Clinical research and trials

Clinical trials and research play a vital role in improving healthcare for everyone and as a trust we are continuing to broaden the focus of our research activities across different clinical areas. Almost 1,600 patients took part in 73 research studies with us during the past year and we are also leading major multi-million national research programmes in partnership with the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) in stroke rehabilitation and transition for young people from child to adult services. When complete, both programmes will make recommendations to the rest of the NHS in England.

We are also developing a new dedicated clinical trials facility at North Tyneside General Hospital which will allow us to make real strides in increasing the amount of research and clinical trials being offered to those accessing our services. Interest from pharmaceutical companies wanting to carry out clinical trials with us has increased and we expect this to grow further as the industry becomes aware of our new facility.

We have also just launched a pioneering new clinical trials partnership with Synexus to develop a dedicated research facility at Hexham General Hospital.

We place a strong focus on clinical trials and research to benefit our patients

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

Corporate social responsibility at home and abroad

We care passionately about the communities we serve across North Tyneside and Northumberland and over many years have delivered several projects and developments to benefit our staff, patients and local people.

Our registered trust charity Bright Northumbria was originally formed in 1998 and has received millions of pounds in donations from grateful patients, families and our own staff with money invested directly to the frontline to enhance patient experience.

For over ten years, our charity has funded the development of an award-winning healing arts programme which uses art as a therapeutic medium to improve the environment for patients and staff in our hospitals. This has involved collaboration with students from local colleges and universities using art and photography to enhance the patient environment.

For the past decade we have also supported a groundbreaking project which sees our employees working in partnership with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in northern Tanzania. During this time our teams have volunteered their time to travel to Tanzania to train their African counterparts, to enable them to provide a vastly improved medical environment for patients in their country.

Our long standing international links with Tanzania were recently held up as a national exemplar by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health which calls for more opportunities for NHS staff to volunteer overseas.

Supporting apprenticeships in the local community

Much closer to home and as one of the north easts largest employers, we also care passionately about developing our local workforce. We recently launched our biggest ever recruitment drive for more young people to join us on apprenticeship schemes in various areas from health and social care, estates and facilities, to business administration.

All of our apprentices follow a detailed induction programme where they will learn about providing high quality, patient-centered care, whatever their role. Our successful apprenticeship scheme has been in place for almost ten years and over 95% of apprentices who successfully complete their programmes with us go on to secure employment with Northumbria Healthcare.

Over 95% of our apprentices go on to secure employment

    with Northumbria Healthcare

  • ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION

Partnership with Newcastle Eagles basketball club

We also have a unique partnership with the Newcastle Eagles and work with the club on their Hoops for Health programme to promote a healthy lifestyle to school children across North Tyneside and Northumberland.

As well as teaching children about the importance of exercise, healthy eating and advice on the dangers of smoking, the Hoops for Health programme is also engaging local school children to help develop ideas for artwork to be displayed in the new short-stay paediatric facility at our new Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.

    Reducing our carbon footprint

As an organisation we are also committed to reducing the carbon footprint of the many services and buildings we operate. Our most recent efforts have seen over 500,000 annual cost savings identified through optimised temperature, lighting and IT controls - just one of the many initiatives underway be our dedicated sustainability group.

Putting our patients first is our absolute priority and

Candidates are to note that our newly established values based recruitment method used within the organisation seeks to establish whether individuals not only have the technical competencies relevant to the role but that they have values which are aligned to those of the Trust.

Assessment centres: We regularly require candidates to attend assessment centres as part of our

recruitment and selection processes for a number of roles. This is usual practice and candidates may be required to undertake a number of assessments such as numerical and verbal reasoning, technical competencies and for senior posts, online psychometric tests. Candidates will be notified whether they will be required to attend an assessment centre by the recruitment and selection team should they be shortlisted for interview.

Reimbursable expenses: Candidates may be eligible for consideration of reimbursable expenses at the

These expenses are at the discretion of the Trust and approval to claim such expenses should be obtained from the Head of HR Services & Development, prior to any expenses being incurred. All expenses are discretionary and must be applied for in advance. Reimbursements will not be made retrospectively where approval in advance has not been sought.

Staff car parking: Applicants should be aware that staff car parking is not guaranteed and all Trust

employees are required to apply for car parking permits which are discretionary and based on selection criteria. If employees are successful in obtaining a car parking permit following their application, they should note that a monthly fee is payable.
