Week One:Genre

•Photographic Genres•Written Genres•Film Genres

Pick 4 films of different style, form and subject and research into the genre and sub-genres exhibited.

Week Two:Building Visual Language

(Staging)•The staging and manipulation of photographs

•Select 3 films, photographs and paintings that fall into the same genre (different genre for each media) and list the elements that define the genre.

Week Three:Collage & Montage

•The difference between collage and montage and how they can be applied to photography

•Create a collage, digitally or on paper, using copyright free images exploring one of the 5 given subjects.

Week Four:The Semiotics of Photography•The origins of semiotics

•The difference between the signifier and the signified•The difference between connotations and denotations•Select 4 photographs and decide what the author meant, what they mean to us and what they might mean to other people

Week Five:Culture and Meaning

•The associations different cultures have related to certain colours and gestures.

•Take 5 photographs that define “University Culture” and list possible signifiers and their signifieds.

Week Six:Images and Text

•The effects of the combination of image and text.

•Choose four given images and take two photographs and create a headline/caption to fit each or combine image and text in any of the shown combinations.

Week Seven:Cliché•How mobile and internet

technologies, particularly social media are contributing to emerging common elements.•How clichés are used in other medias•Source 8 examples of subject types that demonstrate clichés in social photography and list common visual signifiers•5 likes and dislikes of social media

speak to friends back at home whilst at uni•Stalking- We can’t help but take a peek at what poor souls our exes have ended up with•Self esteem boost- Seeing people you disliked in school working in McDonalds•Inspiration- in terms of photography blogs etc.•Entertainment- wasting hours at a time doing absolutely nothing

5 dislikes of social media

•Procrastination- constant distractions from things that are actually important•Ridicule- If somebody doesn’t agree with you, they will tell you so. The right opinion or no opinion•Misleading- ‘Don’t believe everything you read’ is especially true on social media•Time consuming- I spend several hours a day using social media websites with nothing to show for it
