New Hire Benefit Eligibility
As of July 1st, 2014, Mecklenburg County made a change to benefit eligibility date for new hires, which will include anyone transitioning from part-time to full-time employment. As a reminder, Medic falls under the County benefit programs so this will apply to all new hires at Medic and employees making a transition from part-time to full-time employment. The current eligibility period is that benefits start on the first day of the month after hire – for example, if one started on May 20th, their benefits would begin on June 1st. The new eligibility period directs benefits to be effective the
In an effort to improve Medic’s
Performance Evaluations on several
levels, a revised Performance Evaluation Tool has been created. It
is important that all Agency

explanation of this tool and the changes associated with it before it
is implemented on Monday, July
21st. If you have any questions after
viewing it, please speak with your Manager or Supervisor for
assistance.

first day of the pay period on or after a 30 day waiting period – for example, if one starts on July 8th, their benefits would begin on August 19th (no more than 45 days later). Again, this does not affect current full-time, active employees.
Saline IV Fluid Administration Directives
Administer saline IV IF patient presents with any of the
following at least partially
related to volume depletion:
Blood pressure < 90
Heart rate > 120
Altered mental state due to
volume depletion
It is completely appropriate to
initiate IV access with saline lock only for patients requiring
IV medication administration
without the need for fluid
resuscitation
It is also important that field crews remain diligent in their SIREN documentation of saline usage and fill it out in its entirety. These efforts will help us best manage our supply.
Saline IV fluids started being issued at the logistics window earlier this month to help address a short-term, critical need in lieu of the national saline shortage. Since that time, additional measures have been developed by the agency and, as a direct result, the clinically unnecessary usage of saline has dropped.
With this development, we will begin placing saline IV fluids back on ALS units in the coming days. This change is intended to facilitate a smoother process for Field Crews, OSTs and everyone else involved in the handling process. So long as our saline administration remains consistent with current levels, we will continue with this practice.
Please remember the following directives related to IV & fluid administration remain in place:

During the July In-Service, all employees will receive training on
new Philips MRx monitors as well as
the new Philips FR-3 automated
external defibrillators. The new AED’s will be placed on all BLS NET
units and will be used by the
Charlotte Fire Department as well
as all Mecklenburg County First Responder departments.
While the new MRx monitors are
very similar to our current monitors, it is important that all
clinical providers receive this
training during the July continuing
education rotation. There are some slight differences in operation as
well as additional features of these
new devices. The planned
deployment for the Philips MRx monitors will begin at 00:00 hours
on Friday August 1st. The July In-Service will also consist of two
updates to the current patient
destination protocol.
All certified field personnel must attend one of the July In-Service
sessions listed below in order to be
compliant with operating the new
patient care equipment as well as the updates to the Patient Care
Protocols. The new equipment and
the updated protocol will go into
effect on August 1!
Registration through the
Agency’s Learning
Management System is mandatory. Please log on to the
LMS at
https://medic911.plateau.com to sign
up for a session.

Two Important Items about Parking at CMC University.
1. Please note that when picking up from or dropping patients off at CMC University, do not park under the awning of the Outpatient Surgery center. The sliding glass door is where the patients are wheeled out to their personal vehicles when they are being discharged. When you are parked there this blocks their access. There have been recent incidents where they have had to wheel the patients out to their cars in the parking lot.
Mecklenburg County recently notified retirees of a potential change in the medical plan for Medicare eligible retir-ees (for the 2015 plan year). This infor-mation does not impact current active employees, however, Medic feels it nec-essary to communicate as information becomes available. The County is con-sidering options that will provide Medi-care eligible retirees with access to equal or better coverage. Those retir-ees that are not Medicare eligible will continue to receive the same medical coverage as active employees. Medic as well as Mecklenburg County are com-mitted to providing retirees with the level of medical coverage that has al-ways been promised. If you should have any questions or concerns in re-gards to this information, please con-tact a member of the Human Resources Department at [email protected].

When it comes to reliability, it’s hard to beat the track record of paramedics and EMTs. Whether it’s speed, knowing just what to do in the event of an accident, serious injury, gun violence, or heart attack, or the amazingly calm and reassuring way emergency responders go about their work, there are plenty of reasons to heap praise on this group of individuals. This also includes how patients are cared for during that ambulance ride to the hospital emergency department.

In support of Medic employee Eric Hudspeth, the Agency hosted a blood drive on the first week of July. We have received the statistics from the event and we would like to thank everyone who partic-ipated. We collected enough blood to help at least 117 pa-tients in our community. We collected more blood than in the previous 3 blood drives.
Once again “THANK YOU”
