How does your film noir represent certain social groups?

Representing – Gender & Age

In a conventional film noir the femme fatal would be wearing something very sexy and glamorous whereas we got the detective and femme fatal to sort of dress the same. This showed how both genders can wear the same thing but still look different. Also the same with age, having older characters still being attractive. For example the femme fatal still looked sexy but powerful, even though she is older than the conventional femme fatal. This also brought my film noir into the 21st centaury when women are becoming more independent and not just following men. Also women of and older age can still get annoyed and still be daunting.

Representing – Class & Status

The detective is in a smart suit, well made and possibly even tailored, therefore he has a good job and can afford nice things. For the femme fatal to want to kill he must have done something really bad for to have that power over him, because after all in the 1940s she would be seen as only a women which isn’t a good thing. If I had only seen my film noir I would of thought that the femme fatal must have some sort of status due to the way she is dressed. She is dressed very nicely and is very well presented so she has the money to afford nice things.

Representing – Location & Ethnicity

Due to the fact they are in an office shows the importance of the detective. Having his own office means that he is high up in his company and important. Due to both of them being white is very conventional and for the 1940s normal to only have white actors and actresses. An office like that is normal in a big office building, so they are in the center of a big city working for a big corporation.

Society – Regular People

Some people might find this almost relatable, well mainly women I believe. Like you should never cross a women or doubt that they won’t do anything or retaliate. It must have been terrible what the detective did but whatever he did he shouldn’t have expected nothing. Women watching this I want them to feel that they have power and shouldn’t be living in the shadows of men, and to men that watch this I think they should stop doubting women's abilities, because they could easily put poison in your drink.

Stereotypes The way the detective was powerless is defiantly an anti-stereotype, also having such a strong femme fatal. A big stereotype was that the femme fatal was sexy and attractive sort of a regular blonde. I do not know of anymore stereotypes in my film noir as I wanted it to push all the boundaries. I wouldn't’t say our film noir is conventional but has the qualities of a conventional film noir. But I do think the way we filmed it is stereotypical because is builds the tension and has been used before.
