Continued Segregation
Fifty years after the US supreme court passed the landmark decision of Brown v Board of Education, which concluded that the policy of separate schools for white and black children was unequal and unconstitutional, thus outlawing segregation, Milwaukee is the most segregated city for blacks and whites(and Latinos) in the country, according to the US census bureau.

Most children would prefer to be in a wooded area, playing cops and robbers or simply climbing trees without a care in the world.
But others must adapt to their surroundings…..

This is the potential playground for a child on the Southside

Even living at home can seem fearsome, when windows are barred up to keep the “bad people” out.

Fences and gates are laced through the inner city, almost as a direct representation of the lack of trust and unity throughout the community.

However looks can be deceiving. Not all neighborhoods in the inner city are comprised of hopeless street dwellers and drug attics; as so often represented in films and the media. There are good neighborhoods, with good people who live in these communities as well. These communities function well and rely on one another because they do have one thing in common, their socio-economic status.

The Boys and Girls Club is just one of many examples of how a community can come together for the greater good.

Whether it is through sports, or simply recreational play, children are being taught that unity can make a difference

Maybe then, images such as this can become the past, and the many positive aspects of the school can become the future.
