Master Comparative Studies in English and Ameri-can Language, Literature and Culture

Comparative – Cross-Medial – Job-Oriented

With its global and intercultural focus, we designed our Mas-ter program to pave your way into domestic and international job markets for both academic and non-academic careers.

Fully taught in English, the four-semester Master program starts once a year in the winter term (October).

Approaching literature and linguistics comparatively, you can research and discuss cultural phenomena within the changing contexts of history, taking into consideration theories on such socio-cultural variables as class, gender, ethnicity, technology, or media.

In our M. A. Comparative, you will not just work on texts but also cross-medial, for example on song, film, sound, dance, mu-sic videos, images, photography, graphic novels, blogs, social media.

The master course consists of eight modules out of which only two are mandatory. You may choose your subjects and your study focus in the other six modules from all the courses of-fered in our five departments:

• Medieval English Studies• American Studies • Linguistics• Modern English Literature • Anglophone Literatures

Two of the highlights and unique selling points of our Master course are the Language Skills and the job-oriented Project Module.

The Language Skills Module focusses on written and oral Eng-lish skills in professional surroundings and is taught solely by native speakers.

In the Project Module students organize and market their own academic conference and present a paper, fusing academic re-search and on-the-job training.

Training of job-oriented professional skills such as Language and Communication proficiency, text analysis and production, project management, presentation skills, audience management, mod-eration and media competence is integrated into the curriculum while some of our seminars address contemporary global con-cerns such as:

• Challenging Perspectives: • Life, Language, Literature• Experiencing Cultural Change• Breaking Boundaries: Culture, Concepts, Constructions• Imagine(d) Identities – Literary Constructions

International and Academic Networks

Our partnerships with academic institutions in the UK (Reading, Winchester, UCL London), Ireland (UCD), India, and the United States (Madison/Wisconsin, Davis/ California) provide many op-portunities to study or make contacts abroad.

The Department of English and American Studies is actively in-volved in two graduate schools and our graduate students are highly encouraged to take advantage of these intellectual and scholarly resources.
