WAGTAILS’ WEEKLY SUGGESTED HOME LEARNING – WB 1.6.20 Hello again Wagtails! We hope you all had a great half term enjoying the sunshine, making memories and helping your mums and dads out in the house and garden. Thank you for the huge amount of letters sent to school addressed to the Yeti. We have put them in a huge envelope and sent them on to the Yeti. We are sure he will find your advice very helpful and he will appreciate all your help to make him a good friend. This week we will finish reading the story and complete activities based around it. If you find any of the tasks too hard, please refer to Sparrows’ task sheet. Sparrows are also completing tasks around Yeti and the Bird. We also have a very fun assignment for you – Discovery Education have asked children from St Oswalds to be featured in their NewsBites film. This is a great opportunity for you as well as brilliant exposure for our school. We would love lots of Wagtails involved in this! Find more information about this fun assignment below. Hopefully, we do not have too long until we can all be together again. We miss you! Love from Miss Silver and Mrs Costello

ENGLISH MATHSReading – Read every day for pleasure for 15 minutes. Remember to read a mixture of fiction and non-fiction.

Comprehension tasks - Read/watch the story ‘Yeti and the Bird’. You

can listen to the story being read aloud on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Uf9GGhZ6dI Retell the story in some way. You could write the story in your own words, role-play the story with your family, create your own illustrations and sequence the story, create finger puppets and create a puppet show of the story, retell the story in the form of a play script or create an advert advertising the story.

- We meet a new character in the story, the bird. Read the information about birds you might find in your garden and answer the questions (see below). I have also included a garden bird-sighting checklist, if you fancy doing some bird watching.

- Write 10 questions about the story, Yeti and the Bird, to quiz a family member. I want you to be the teacher questioning your family member’s understanding of the story. For example, you might ask, where was the bird supposed to land? Where was the bird travelling?

Writing - Grammar skill – using an apostrophe to show

possession. Watch this video and complete the two online activities: https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/subject/module/video/item911548/grade1/module910313/collection910395/section911545/index.html When you are confident with this, try completing the activity below, adding in the missing apostrophes (it’s tricky but try your best!).

- Write sentences about the story, Yeti and the Bird, using an apostrophe to show that something belongs to someone. For example: The Yeti looked closely at the Bird’s map. The Yeti’s roar made him sound scary.

- Create your own piece of writing based on the theme ‘friendship’. You could create a story about a friendship. You could choose to write a poem, a play script or a set of instructions on how to be a good friend. Use your imagination!

Basic Skill – Continue to develop a quick recall of 2, 5 and 10 division facts.Have a go at completing these activities: http://www.snappymaths.com/division/2510xdiv/2510xdiv.htm

Unfortunately, White Rose has started to charge for their worksheets.

Spellings – words ending in –al.- Using the word list below, use a dictionary to

find out what some of the words mean. There are a few you might not have heard of or used before. You can use an online dictionary if you don’t have one at home. When you have a good understanding of what the word means, use the word in a sentence and get an adult to check that you have used the word correctly.

- Can you write each word in the list 10 times in your best handwriting?

- Ask a grown up to hold a spelling test and see if you can spell them all correctly.

R.E. OTHERThe theme is: RECONCILIATION – INTER-

RELATING: BEING SORRY - God helps us to choose well

We have a choice, sometimes we use it well and sometimes we make wrong choices.

With your family, tell stories about making a wrong choice or something similar. What happens as a

consequence? Talk about the situations where we have to choose what to do and how sometimes we

make good choices – good for others and for ourselves – and sometimes we make wrong choices which make

others and ourselves unhappy.Talk about how it is sometimes hard to say sorry when you have made a wrong choice – and sometimes it can

be hard to forgive someone else when their choice hurts you.

- Draw scenarios and sort your drawings into ‘good choices’/’bad choices’. Talk about what is happening in each picture.

- Role-play a situation when a choice has to be made. Make double-sided badges with happy/sad faces to use when acting out these scenarios.

Science/Geography – The bird in the story was migrating. Why do birds migrate? Can you find out more about this and write a report to teach others?

Art - A yeti is a fictional creature. Can you draw/paint/create your own made-up animal/creature? Extra challenge – write a description of your fictional creature.

Music - Compose a song that Yeti and the bird might sing in the forest each night.

PE - Plan a new game that Yeti and the bird can play together.

Computing – Continue working your way through the Block Coding Year 2 unit 2a on Espresso. There are 6 lessons. Please email or tweet school to receive the login details. Here is a link to unit 2a: https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/coding/unit.html#/unit2a/lesson1

Special assignmentDiscovery Education thinks it would be wonderful if the children of St Oswald’s RC Primary School could be involved in an Espresso News Bites film that they are planning for June 24th, National Writing Day. They are looking for News Bites viewers to write haikus on the theme of Summer term 2020. That could mean a haiku simply on summer as a season or perhaps, for some of the older children, a haiku on what it feels like to return to school after weeks of lockdown, being reunited with friends and teachers (For those still at home, they are suggesting it could be a haiku that expresses thoughts on what home schooling is like for them). They would like their News Bites item to feature several children reading their poems directly to camera, and to include shots of the poems written on the page as well, so they will need parents to film the children, using iPhones (or similar!), holding the phone landscape not portrait. The children will need to be head and shoulders in shot like a news reporter and the poem on the page should be filmed separately (also landscape). We hope you will find this a fun assignment. They will of course need parental consents signed, please see below. They have resources on the site which give some guidance on haiku writing https://central.espresso.co.uk/espresso/primary_uk/servlet/file/store66/item1129206/doc.pdf The pieces to camera will need to be edited together so your deadline is 17th June latest. Please email your videos to school before this date.
