Kingston School is a dynamic and forward-looking institute that works towards providing quality educational services. Opinion surveys have indicated that the Kingston School has progressed steadily and is regarded as an upcoming quality school in Medan.
To meet the challenges of highly globalized, knowledge-driven 21st century, we are committed to promoting the all-round development of our students. The opportunity to mingle the students of the Indonesia National Curriculum and British National Curriculum certainly gives the students a different flavour of school life. Besides that, Kingston has maintained a conducive environment for learning inside and outside the classrooms.
The teachers are self-disciplined in carrying out their teaching and non-teaching duties in school and are available to assist all students. They also work closely with parents to guide each student’s progress.
Let us all work together to make Kingston School a quality school. Lastly, please feel proud to show the School Excalibur around.

Nursery Field Trip to Rahmat Gallery
On Wednesday, 28th February 2018 our Nursery students visited Rahmat Gallery to learn about animals
and insects.
For many, it was their very first visit to Rahmat Gallery and they were all very excited about the trip.
They explored around the zone that had animals and insects, discovering all sorts of different kinds of
animals and insects. They also observed and learned about the name, real size, and a variety of animals and
insects.
The students really enjoyed their trip. It was great to take learning out of the classroom and give them
an experience they can share. It was an amazing day and all the students felt happy.

Changing Materials Materials change when they are heated, cooled or mixed with water. Also the shapes of the materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching. A substance may undergo a change in shape or change from one form to another that makes it look different, e.g. butter melting. Sometimes a material can change to a totally different form, e.g. paper burns into ash.
These are some pictures of us while doing our experiment about changing materials by mixing the materials with water. Some substances seem to disappear when they are stirred in water. When this happens, we say the substance has dissolved. Some materials can be dissolved in water.
Now challenge yourself!!!Which of these materials that can be dissolved in water?
Draw a circle.

Mass ProjectMATH YEAR 2
Working in pairs, Year two pupils made balance scales with 2 plastic cups, clothes hangers and some yarn. Then, they used the balance scale to measure
the mass of a handful of pebbles and a handful of green beans. A handful of pebbles is heavier than a handful of green beans. How did they know?
Through this experiment we tried to prove it. When they used the balance scale and put a handful of pebbles and a handful of green beans, the plastic cup of pebbles weighed down. It showed that it is heavier than the
green beans. Mass is usually measured by kilograms (kg) and grams (g). With a traditional balance scale, we could not find the mass of those materials but just their weight (how heavy or light they were).

Amazing Rainforest
Rainforests are the world’s
oldest natural habitats, and an
amazing array of animals and
plants have evolved within them. The rainforest
habitat is divided into layers: emergent layer,
canopy layer,
understory layer
and forest floor.
More than a
million species of
plants and animals
live in the Amazon
rainforest alone.
The lifecycles of
rainforests are
so completely
i n t e r d e p e n d e n t
that even small imbalances in the system can
cause irrevocable damage – and the extinction
of entire species.
Rainforests once covered 14% of our world’s
surface. Now they cover less than 5%. Every
second, an area of the rainforest the size of a
football field is being destroyed. Some scientists
believe that, if we lose our rainforests, we might
put our whole planet at risk.

Students were finding out
what the size of the Sun is. To
do this, they created their own
pinhole viewer .
The students went out into
the school’s basketball court.
They were using their viewers to
find out the size of the Sun.
Working in
groups, one student
stood with their back
to the Sun and held
their viewer above
their shoulder or
to the side, in the
direction of the Sun.
Another student held
the white paper and
angled it until an
image of the Sun
was projected onto its surface.
They needed to measure:
• The diameter of the image
of the Sun on the paper.
• The distance from the
pinhole to the paper.
Back in the classroom, the
teacher gave the groups the
THE SIZE OF THE SUN
• Take a large paper plate or a piece of cardboard and cut out a 2.5cm square from the centre
• Place a piece of aluminium foil over the hole and tape it in place• Pierce a small hole in the centre of the foil using a pin or the
sharp end of a pencil
formula for calculating the
size of the Sun.
This is:
• Diameter of the Sun’s
image divided by the
distance from the pinhole
to the paper.
• Multiply the result by
150,000,000 (the distance
in kilometres from the
Earth to the Sun).
The result, is
approximately the diameter
of the Sun.

ARTICLE YEAR 11 & 12 CREATIVE ACTIVITIES
T h h r o u g h o u t
our Creative
Activities class
this year, we studied several
interesting topics. One of the
most amusing yet challenging
topics was Kolase. Kolase is
an art made by using pieces
of eggshells. Doing kolase
was quite aggravating since it
involves many attempts, a lot
of effort and time.
The most frustrating part was to clean the slighly
putrid-smelled eggshells and fitting each piece into an
image. It is recommended to bring a dry handkerchief,
towels or any cloth to dry the inner segment of the eggs.
If you are curious about how kolase is made, you can
try it at home by following these steps:
1. First of all, collect empty eggshells.
2. Then, clean the egg shells inside throughly.
3. Next, draw the image you’re planning to make
and paste it on a cardboard
4. Moving on, stick the shells to the image you have
drawn using any strong glue. This particular part
is where your patience is needed.
5. Lastly, let it dry... and that’s it!
Remember the materials that you need are only
paper, cardboard, eggshells, and glue.

In B u d d h i s m , meditation or Bhavana, is a way to develop a useful level of benevolence.
Understanding of meditation according to the KBBI is the concentration of mind and feeling, to achieve something. Bhavana can also mean inner development in carrying out cleansing. Another term that has almost the same meaning as Bhavana is Samadhi which is the focus of the mind on an object.
Meditation has some function or benefits: it helps people to free themselves from tension, become calmer, focused and positive. Meditation can help us overcome problems with clear and centered minds and can also lighten the burdens carried. Bhavana can also help overcome or mitigate minor health related problems such as high blood pressure. Meditation will give good results if done with the right thinking.
Meditation is divided into two namely, Samatha Bhavana and Vipassana Bhavana. Samatha Bhavana is a meditation for the development of inner calmness but mental obstacles cannot be removed by practicing Samatha Bhavana. Samatha Bhavana can only attain concentration levels (jhana) and attain some inner strength. Samatha Bhavana can also consist of metta bhavana (meditation of loving-kindness), karuna bhavana (meditation of compassion), mudita bhavana (meditation of sympathetic joy) and also upekkha bhavana (meditation of equanimity).
Vipassana Bhavana is a meditation on the development of insight about life as well as the true nature of things. In carrying out vipassana, the
object is the name of rupa (inner-matter). This is done by paying attention to the movement of the name and likeness continuously so that it can be seen clearly that the name and likeness are grasped by impermanence, suffering and substancelessness. The purpose of this exercise is to get rid of niravana that is considered an obstacle. Niravana consists of greed, evil desire, hatred, anger, slowness, laziness, weariness, anxiety and doubt.
For meditation, you should first find a suitable place, which is quiet and calm, free from any disturbance. Keep meditating in the same place if you are just beginning to learn to meditate, after more adeptness, try to meditate elsewhere such as office, garden, cave, or in a crowded place. Meditation should also be done at the same time each day to be more organized before being able to meditate at anytime and anywhere.
There are also several meditation positions that can be matched with individual situations. Usually the meditation position is sitting cross-legged by putting the right foot on the left leg with the left hand resting on the left hand on the lap. It is also possible to sit in a half-crossed position with your legs folded to the side. If not possible, you are then allowed to meditate by sitting on a chair. Body and head should be upright but that does not mean to be tense and stiff. Eyes and mouth closed and best not to move the body during meditation. If meditation is advanced, meditation in a position lying down, walking or standing, can be done. Keep focus of all thoughts on only objects chosen for meditation
and not on other things, the meditator should always be aware and alert. When the thoughts diverge from the object, the mind realizes that the thought diverges, and quickly returns that thought to the original object. If this can be done well, then progress in meditation will definitely be achieved.
There have been cases where meditation has helped to alleviate or cure illnesses such as cancer and it has been reported that a singer and composer, Titiek Puspa, had stage 2 cervical cancer in 2009. She went for medication treatment in Singapore where she continued to go back and forth to the hospital every Monday to Friday. Even after receiving the treatment, her cancer had yet to be cured and finally she was asked to carry out breathing meditation where the object of meditation was breathing that included exercises of tongue bent upwards, eyes closed, sat cross-legged, and should not move or lean. This exercise cannot be done carelessly for example, after breathing, exhaled breath should not be heard to the ear. Apparently, Titiek confessed that her stomach was often in pain when bowing, but the pain was no longer felt after meditating for around 13 times. Likewise if she had to go to the toilet, she had to take laxatives to do so. The medications are not needed now as the excrement comes out by itself. There is also the case of an ex-stewardess who had stage 2 ovarian cancer for 2 years before she began to meditate. After meditation, the pain experienced due to cancer began to disappear and the illness itself also disappeared slowly.
