  • Section 31

Industrial OutlookThis new section presents statistics for major manufacturing groups and se-lected products. The 199 industries cov-ered were among those featured in theU.S. Industrial Outlook published by theDepartment of Commerce’s InternationalTrade Administration (ITA) for manyyears. The 1994 edition of the U.S.Industrial Outlook was the last volumepublished in that series of publications.

The 92 tables combine industry andproduct shipments data from the 1992Census of Manufactures and estimatesfor 1993 and 1994 by ITA’s analysts. The estimates were prepared in thespring of 1995 prior to the release of1993 Annual Survey of Manufactures results. The tables also contain employ-ment, wages, capital expenditures, im-port and export data.

The value of shipments shown in thesetables are expressed both in “current”and “constant” dollars. Current dollarsshow the value of the goods produced inthe particular year referred to. Constantdollars, or sometimes referred to aschanges in real dollars, show the valueof a year’s output in the prices of a baseyear so you can accurately compare realchanges in output levels over time. Inthese tables the base year was 1987.ITA uses the Producer Price Index (formore information, see text, section 15)from the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the

product level to deflate the current dollarshipments.

The tables distinguish between industryand product shipments. Shipments dataare collected separately for individualfactories, or establishments, and not atthe company level. Most factories makea variety of products. For statistical pur-poses, each is an establishment classi-fied in the industry identified with its ma-jor product. For instance, the total outputof a plant may consist of 80 percent tiresand 20 percent hose and belting. In thiscase, the total output of the plant wouldbe credited to the tire industry. The totaloutput of all plants so classified wouldmake up the “industry shipments” of thetire industry in this case. The value of alltires shipped by all establishments is ag-gregated to derive “product shipments.”

Trade data shown in the tables were tab-ulated following the Bureau of the Cen-sus’ trade concordance, as adjusted bythe ITA’s analyst, to approximate theStandard Industrial Classification (SIC)industry grouping. The trade figures re-flect final 1993 estimates and preliminary1994 data. Exports are limited to domes-tic exports and are valued “free along-side ship” or f.a.s. Imports are restrictedto goods imported for consumption andare on a customs value basis.
