Firstly the film that we are looking onto is Fight club and how it relates to the hypodermic model

theory and doing a brief summary of what fight club is about, Fight Club was released in 1999 but

also it got turned down by BBFC, When director, David Fincher required it to be an 18 movie, they

refused because it was too violent to be 18 so they resubmit making it less violent only taking a few

minutes in the film making the accept it as a 18.

The story tells a man, he doesn’t say his name, but research on the IMDB site shows that his

character was called the narrator, it is very accurate because he narrator some actions of the film. It

follows this Narrator played as Edward Norton as he weigh in his life with a job and a life filled

apartment with furniture from Ikea and along the lines he meets a character by the name of Tyler

Durden who comes in his time he has numerous amounts of jobs and makes friends with Edward

Norton’s character it escalates by them making a fight club it gets more violent because of the fight

club.

The hypodermic model theory is basically where media consumers their audience making them

passively receive the information given to them but not even realising, that they are doing it, I will

relate the hypodermic model theory to Alexander walker’s review on fight club. There is a quote

from it that says ‘It resurrects the Führer principle. It promotes pain and suffering as the virtues of

the strongest. It tramples every democratic decency underfoot’ this basically means that the film

resurrects Hitler which is a bad thing because Hitler did terrible things but this film was nowhere

near as bad. Then it says ‘The new BBFC Guidelines established the principle that adults should be

free to choose their own entertainment’ this quote states that your are free to do what you wish

when it comes to entertainment if you watch a certain film you will only take the problems for

watching it. They asked for an 18 but BBFC had to look it over with top of the BBFC because they

couldn’t decide but there final judgement was that it was too violent so they denied it this was

because of the scenes was brad Pitt’s character was getting beaten up by the owner of the place

they attended for the fight club, the scene contained more violence showing the destruction that

happen to him. To show what he wrote it says ‘The film, which came with an 18 request from its

distributor, 20th Century Fox, was seen by most of the BBFC's examiners, and also by the BBFC

Director, Robin Duval, his Deputy, and the President and Vice-Presidents, provoking a wide range of

opinion.’ This means that it had a majority of opinions but it was still denied because they must of

thought it was too violent for people to see making the film have to cut a few scenes like the one I

mentioned.

Diversion to me in the fight club is shown because it makes me feel as if I’m taking the role as

someone actually there making me escape from reality. This is a good thing because it makes me

feel as though I am there but not actually in harm of actually creating the violence.

Personal relationship in the fight club would get attached to some of the characters due to the story

because of what happens you want to know why Edward Norton is arguing with Helena Bonham

Carter character and also with Brad Pitt’s character the relationship with Edward Norton’s character.

Then there is the personal identity I wouldn’t see myself doing something like this but I’d probably

turn out to be the Edward Norton character at the beginning, boring and hasn’t got much of a life.

Next there is surveillance which could be good thing because you could idolise and dress like brad

Pitt’s character it may make you more confident and making your life feel better. It also show you

making a homemade bomb, some people might get this information which would be a bad thing due

to people could get harmed.

Finally there is the Uses & gratifications my thoughts on the film are that it is a well put together

story it makes me want to watch it again but also read the book, it doesn’t want me to make bombs

and blow stuff up but it does make me feel as though I am in the film making it seem surreal. Others

in my class would agree with me because the effects of the film do not make them want to passively

start violence or do any awful things that could happen.

We next watched a film called Juno, which showed some well-known actors and actress. Such as;

Ellen Page, Michael Cera, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman these were mostly the main

actors/actress but for this part we are not looking into the hypodermic model instead it is the

reception theory which was created by Stuart hall the theory is basically how we react to a certain

film based on your age, gender ethnicity or even social class.

We had to watch Juno because we didn’t choose to watch it, it was chosen for us, making me have

to watch the film in the classroom of my college, it wasn’t as good because I was comfy making the

movie didn’t do at all good because I wasn’t comfy enough to enjoy the film.

My opinion on the on the film genre is that well suited to the film because it shows humorous

aspects but still has a numerous amount of romantic aspects making the film work well with the

acting and script.

My social class would be that it is working class making us want to watch this film because it would

happen to most of our social class but it doesn’t show exactly everything that’s bad about a teenage

pregnancy.

The film didn’t applied to me at all making me not want to react to the film in any way other than to

watch it and that is all, you may say this is Oppositional but I’ll talk about that later.

Preferred when we talk about the producers intentions he want to make it as good as a film can be

my opinion is that it isn’t a good film but other people may think over wise making have good

response for the producer. Then there is negotiated which is basically I agree with some of the stuff,

I do in some extent. For example, there is the comedy that is in it, it’s funny and understandable due

to my age and sort of people I know that relevant to some of the characters. Then finally there is

Oppositional I was probably defiantly for this just because I didn’t enjoy it even though the points

about negotiated I didn’t enjoy the story due to not having an interest for teenage pregnancy crisis.

I think that Juno was given a 12A other than the PG was because of the use of language for example

a numerous amount of times the film uses fuck and other scenes show that it isn’t worthy of a 12A.

They also speak words other than fuck, the words are listed on Juno case study but there are a lot of

words that don’t suite well with a PG. You’d see a mother and her children going to watch the film

but to the shock of the strong language the mother would complain due to the fact that it was a PG

not a 12A. Finally there is a scene where Juno is watching a film and the content shows a horrific

Page 3: fightclub and juno assessment

scene of gore, it would have been suitable for a 12A because you’d expect to see stuff like that for a

12A but on the other hand, a PG rarely has this sort of violence making it unfitting once again to be a

PG.

Overall my views on the film would be oppositional due to the scenes are not comforting plus I don’t

enjoy most American humour even if it has been acted poorly. I wouldn’t get most references

because some of the crisis of the film is based on the couple wanting a baby but they need Juno I’d

relate to Juno character in age because I could easily get in that situation, were I have a child but

want to give it to a better home or just high school drama. It wasn’t good as a movie though the

story felt unfinished because normal teenage pregnancies don’t end like that and not got the real

story. Then there was where I was watching the film, I was at college very comfy making my whole

experience not as good maybe if I was more relaxed I may have enjoyed it more. Also there is the

class that I am in due to social classification, I’d be in the working class and I would be most relevant

to it because of film studies work, other than that I wouldn’t watch it for my own amusement. Finally

there is the political side of it, I’d change my view on the film being rubbish just because the political

side would be seeing Juno as an equal respecting her decisions on how she sees out her plan for the

baby either she keeps it or not. So overall the film was horrible but the equality making this opinion

of mine sway to change only for that matter.

Next I made a survey with a

few questions relevant to the

film such as; age, gender, what

is there reading on the film;

preferred, negotiated and

Oppositional and should the

film be granted a PG or not.

Here are the results:

These are the results of my survey and I can safetly say most of the

people didn’t agree with me because it was mostly negoitated, I

didn’t enjoy it at all but most people said they’d liked something from

the film but also thought it wasn’t good aswell. The people I asked if it

should of been a PG they all said no due to the fact of the sexual

scenes and bad language used through out the film. Most of the

answers I got were similar because they all didn’t want it to be a PG

on the other hand noone choose oppositional so therefore I had

Page 4: fightclub and juno assessment

different views to those in my classroom. Then there is to the case study, on whether or not the

results are similar or different to it. For example, I can tell that whatever age/gender you are will

inpact on your views, for example due to the age range of the teenage group of the results they

didn’t see most refrence the adult comment made because they had more exprience knowing

references in the film maybe making more relevant to them rather to the younger people making

them just wanting to watch it rather than thinking about all the references and just enjoying the

film. Overall the results i gathered are very similar to the case study due to not being granted a PG

and having similar reasons on why that didn’t happen on the other hand the results were much

different on m opinion for what my reading was about the film.
