Remember when? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24Many people accept that becoming forgetful and perhaps a bit daft are just part of the aging process. Cognitive health experts and research say it isn’t so. The bottom line? Exercise, eat well, socialize and keep learning new things. Your brain and your body will thank you.

Aging well . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28A stream of wisdom exists in our collective history, reflected in our own hearts and minds, friends in our literature, and in our spiritual practices. The trick to aging with a sense of joy and fulfillment is to tap into this wisdom, realize it and apply it to our daily lives.

I’VE STARTED WALKING every morning. Sometime, more or less around sun-rise, our mutt Charlie and I hit the streets for a half hour to an hour. Walking is not new for me. What’s new is that I’ve stopped running. Every now and then, I forget that I’m not a man of 20, as my friend’s mother, Gianna, would say to her husband whenever he would overexert himself, which was a lot.

“Wim, you are not a man of twenty!” I can still hear her admonish him, and now Kristin, my wife, says it to me!

This time I thought that I needed to do that ultramarathon trail run, but my body and my mind are not exactly on the same page when it comes to some things. Let’s just say that I overtrained and it wasn’t pretty.

So now I walk. And I’ve come to really like the walking. It gives me the oppor-tunity to notice…flowers, bugs, other people walking their dogs, and so much more. Maybe I’ll get back to running again and maybe not. We’ll see. I’m finding it easier all the time to adjust to getting older. I went through a rage-against stage, where I was sure that I was the one person in all of history to beat old age and if I just acted

as though my knees didn’t hurt and my heart didn’t thumpitty-thump a little off then I could deny it.

Well, I got past that…mostly. One thing the obvi-ous physical decline (ouch…such a rough phrase) has done is made me pause and reflect. Bob Calhoun talks about this in his wonderful story, Aging well (page 28). He advocates taking time to be quiet and reflect about how we spend our days and what we want from the second half of life. It’s a tricky path to start down, especially if, like most of us, you’ve spent your time be-ing busy and filling up your days with whatever comes along. It’s not hard to stay busy and distracted. What’s hard is stopping being busy and getting simple.

In this issue, we look at health in a positive way…from Bob’s approach to well-being to Kim Sharpe’s story about your brain and how to keep it humming along. Turns out that it’s pretty straightforward, too: Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and interact with people. Stress seems to be a good thing to reduce, also. We touch on some other ideas for staying healthy…slow down your cooking and bring some plants indoors, try out the nature trail in Loveland or relax with a nice meal in Windsor.

Finally we highlight volunteer Maria Gutierrez who loves working with peo-ple that can use her help. She says, “When I volunteer, I feel so satisfied. I get to go home at the end of a day and say, ‘Wow! I helped somebody today.’ It’s a good feeling.”

And it turns out that one of the best ways to be happy is to be less self- centered and to look at the world with a how-can-I-help attitude…the ol’ you get what you give. You can actually change the structure of your brain, science is show-ing, by being more kind and compassionate. We can change our habits, mental ones and otherwise, at any age. Best start now…

Cook more slowly I READ RECENTLY that a tell-tale sign of an accomplished chef is a (rela-tively) clean kitchen by the time dinner is served. But the old maxims, “Clean as you go,” and “put away as you go,” are easier said than done, especially when dinner is late and life is pushing.

Tips to keep the kitchen clean include starting with a clean kitchen

and an empty dishwasher, using a sin-gle food-scraps bowl and putting away unused portions of veggies and chees-es immediately after each is prepared. However, the single most effective approach to minimize mess is to sim-ply cook more slowly. Faith Durand, author of the award wining, Kitchn Cookbook suggests “being slow and

deliberate in measuring and chopping, and wiping up in between each step, is probably the most effective way to cook more neatly.”

Cooking is an inescapable part of life itself. When we consciously slow down our cooking, it ’s more enjoy-able. Slow cooking is a life art that is worth learning.

TO GET FRESH IDEAS for a better yard or land-scape, we often just stretch our necks to peek over the fence to spy on our neighbors. Our next-door neigh-bors recently added a second floor deck with a metal spiral staircase to their back yard studio. Hmm, maybe we could use a spiral staircase....

Rather than checking out just one yard at a time, an easier way is to attend a home show, which run throughout the fall up and down the Front Range, from Pueblo (October 9-11) to Cheyenne (Septem-ber 25-27.) The two most convenient for our area are the Greeley Home Show, (October 2-4) held at Is-land Grove Events Center, and The Annual Northern Colorado Fall Home and Decorating Show, (October 24-25) held at the Ranch Events Center. The Gree-ley Show has a $4 general admission charge though seniors are free the first day and $3 on other days. The Northern Colorado show is free on all days.

Bring nature indoors “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” —Gary Snyder

Astronauts aboard the international space station eat radishes, lettuce, kale, peas and other vegetables grown right there, 220 miles above the earth. Their “space gardens” not only provide nourishment, but also help clean the air. Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide from the air and give back pure oxygen. Further, according to studies at Texas A & M, plants provide a vital ingredient for good mental health, radiating a calming influence that helps astronauts concentrate better and perform tasks with greater accuracy.

These lessons from space gardens were first learned here on earth, as far back as China in 200 B.C. when an anonymous Han Emperor gave instructions to bring plants and trees inside his palace. He is credited with initiating the art of bonsai.

From the astronauts to ancient Chinese emperors, we all live better, healthier, more intently when nature’s gifts are allowed to grow in our homes.

As a female podiatrist, I am frequently asked to offer recommendations on comfortable women’s dress shoes. This can be a tricky, since the trends for wom-en’s shoes tend to run from sky-high heels to flimsy flats that offer little to no support.

The following is a guide to help you choose better shoes for the best comfort and health of your feet.

CHECK YOUR SHOE SIZE, AGAINYou may be surprised to learn that your shoe size has changed over the years. The foot tends to lengthen and widen over time as the arch falls and gravity takes it’s toll. For that reason, it is a good idea to have your shoe size checked again. However, try not to rely on shoe size alone to determine whether a shoe fits. Walk around in the shoe. Do your toes feel cramped? Does the heel slip out? Do you feel unsta-ble? If so, leave them on the shelf.

IF THE SHOE DOESN’T FIT: “DON’T WEAR IT”Wearing shoes that are too big or too small can create a number of issues. A shoe that is too large can cause the foot to shift around in the shoe making you unstable and vulnerable to injury. On the other hand, a shoe that

is too small squeezes the toes and forefoot, aggravating hammertoes and bunions and creating painful blisters and corns. Both options are also a frequent cause of foot cramps due to muscle fatigue.

HOW HIGH CAN YOU GO? Common foot maladies associated with high heels include sesamoiditis and metatarsalgia (ball of the foot pain), neuromas (nerve damage), plantar fasciitis (heel pain), stress fractures and ankle sprains. In addition to this, deformities such as hammertoes and bunions can progress more quickly with regular use of ill-fitting and excessively high heeled shoes. To avoid these com-plications it is best to wear a lower heel (1/2 – ¾ inch max) and preferably a wider heel such as those found in a wedge or clog-style shoe. This helps to reduce the pressure at the front of the foot and is much more stable. Also, look for shoes that have padding in the forefoot to cushion the toes and ball of the foot.

IS FLATTER BETTER? There has been a trend over the last several years toward flat shoes without a heel. While this has gen-erally been a good development, there are still several cautions to note with this shoe type. The main concern is the lack of real substance to the shoe. They usually consist of flimsy and flexible material, both within the sole and the upper of the shoe. This can create a slew of problems from plantar fasciitis and tendinitis to stress fractures. Fortunately, better options are becom-ing available. Look for a sturdy sole with arch support and an upper part that has a firm heel counter (back of the shoe).

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEEDThe best piece of advice I have is to be patient with the process. It can take time to find a truly comfort-able pair of dress shoes.

DON’T LET COOLER autumn temperatures slow you down. Fall is one of the best times to enjoy the natural beau-ty and amenities Colorado offers.

Take a hike to view the dazzling display of Aspen trees and other foliage as they change colors. The Poudre and Thompson Canyons, Lory State Park just west of Fort Col-lins and Rocky Mountain National Park are prime areas for a colorful walkabout in the woods.

Ride a bicycle on one of the many multi-use recreation trails that wind through Larimer and Weld Counties. The Poudre River Trail, which runs through Greeley to Windsor and then again from Fort Collins to Laporte, is a local favor-ite. Fort Collins Spring Creek Trail is another popular route.

Up in Estes Park, enjoy the 3.8-mile paved path around Lake Estes. It abounds with wild life, including elk engaging in their annual, fall mating ritual. Just take care to keep your distance so you don’t find yourself on the wrong side of this wild scene.

Take advantage of free days at cultural places that are just a short drive away. Colorado residents can enjoy the beautiful Denver Botanical Gardens for free on September 9, and November 13 and 14. Discover the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for free on September 27, October 19 and November 9. (A fee still applies to IMAX films, Planetari-um shows and temporary exhibitions.) You can see for free what’s new at Denver Zoo, November 2, 13 and 19.

Medicare 101MEDICARE IS THE federally administered health insurance program for Americans 65 and older (some people with disabilities under age 65 may qualify for Medicare, too). It’s not a one-size-fits-all program, however. Like private insurance plans, Medicare offers choices—the Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage.

Original Medicare can be used anywhere in the country. You can go to any provider you want as long as they accept Medicare. So if you want to see a specialist in Denver, the Mayo Clinic or you’re traveling and need non-emergent care—like if you live part of each year in different places—you can see whomever you want if they accept Medicare, but co-pays and deductibles apply. You can choose a supplemental plan to those types of additional costs.

Medicare Advantage plans all have a network of providers, and unless it’s an emergency, if you receive care from an out-of-network provider, you may end up paying the full amount for those ser-vices or a large portion of it. Advantage plans also have co-pays.

To learn more about Medicare and if it’s the right choice for you, contact a local Colorado Health Connect office (www.connectforhealthco.com) or a Medicare counselor from the University of Colorado Health’s Aspen Club (970-495-8560).

APPROXIMATELY ONE out every 10 times that people 50 and better take a tumble, they end up with a serious injury, such as a broken bone. Don’t become a statistic; rather, take simple precautions to

prevent falls. Follow these recommenda-tions adapted from the Colorado Depart-ment of Public Health & Environment.

Regular exercise that focuses on balance and building core strength, such

as yoga, tai chi and weight lifting, can help you become more stable and re-duce your chance of falling. Most of the community and senior centers, as well as the major health systems in northern Colorado offer fitness classes aimed at fall prevention.

It’s so clear! Having annual eye exams and keeping your prescription glasses up to date help ensure you max-imize your vision so you can better see potential tripping hazards.

Dizziness and drowsiness are com-mon side effects of certain over-the-counter and prescription medications. Both conditions can lead to falls. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if anything you’re taking could cause you to feel out of sorts or unsteady so you can plan your activity accordingly.

Make your home safer by reducing tripping hazards (like throw rugs), add-ing grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower and next to the toilet, adding railings on both sides of stairways and improving the lighting in your home.

Don’t fall for it

In addition to its indoor dining room, the restaurant offers patio seat-

ing on seasonal evenings, with views of Windsor Lake and Boardwalk Park.

The Chef ’s Tasting Menu won’t disappoint if you’ve come with a healthy appetite. Selections vary by season, so you’ll never tire of the same entree choices. The appetizer menu var-ies as well, and we suggest asking your server for current recommendations.

THE 4TH ANNUAL FORTOBERFEST is right around the corner! This September festival, affectionately nick-named “Bikes, beers, and bands,” celebrates everything we love about Fort Collins living, from (you guessed it) active and sustainable living, to our plethora of local breweries and diverse music scene.

This year’s event will take place September 18th-19th in the beautiful outdoors of Old Town Fort Collins. The lineup is yet to be announced, but you can expect FORToberfest 2015 to top previous years with more bands (and beer) as the festival continues to grow. Last year’s event featured a melting pot of genres including rock, folk, blues, hip-hop, and much more!

Head on down to FORToberfest on September 18th and 19th, for a full day of local music and events that won’t disappoint. The event is free, and guests are encour-aged to support sustainable living by riding their bikes to Old Town for the weekend. Details will be posted at www.downtownfortcollins.com as they become available.

THE TRANSITION FROM SUMMER to fall brings ideal temperatures and beautifully changing colors to northern Colorado’s outdoors. One of the best places to enjoy this time of year is on the Loveland Recreation Trail. The 18-mile trail currently loops around Loveland and will attach to the Fort Collins trail network over the coming years. As is, the trail offers excellent spots along the way for resting, pic-nicking, and wildlife watching.

The newly completed path around Jayhawker Ponds at River’s Edge Natural Area is just one of those local treasures. This 121-acre natural area is open for walking, fishing, pic-nicking and wildlife observation. The area is handicap acces-sible, and restrooms are on-site. Park at Centennial Park on 1st St. and Taft Ave., then walk along the Loveland Recre-

ation Trail a short distance to the natural area’s entrance to access the path.

In 2014 the City of Loveland acquired an 87-acre piece of land, later named Sunset Vista Natural Area. The trail and amenities for this open space are still in the works, but catching the Loveland Recreation Trail near the Taft Ave. and 57th St. intersection can currently ac-cess the area. Sunset Vista Natural Area sits diagonal from the recreation trail’s dead end, on the northeast corner of the intersection. The open space is home to fox, coyotes, deer, songbirds, raptors, and amphibians, as well as a host of native wetlands vegetation.

More information on Loveland’s trails and natural areas can be found at www.cityofloveland.org.

Recently developed new E-Scoop lenses from Holland

now enable doctors to help patients with one of the chief complaints associated with macular degenera-tion—cloudy vision.

Dr. Stamm, a low vision optom-etrist servicing Nebraska and the Greater Denver area, and is a mem-ber of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists (IALVS), offers new hope and vision.

“Macular degeneration not only causes central blind spots but reduces clarity,” says Dr. Stamm. “Most of my patients ask me for clearer vision.”

Glasses that use the new technology bridge the gap between standard eyeglasses and spectacle head-borne telescopes. Whether your difficulty is night driving, bright light, sunlight or simply seeing clearly into the distance, the E-Scoop lens placed over a standard eyeglass prescription can help.

By combining six different optical properties into a two-lens system, vision can often be en-hanced. “We start with the patient’s prescription and then add prism to move the image to a healthy seeing part of the macula,” said Dr. Stamm.

• The lens has five distinct fea-tures that make vision clearer and sharper, with reduced glare:

• The prism moves the image away from the damaged macu-lar area.

• The low vision prescription en-sures that patients’ needs are met.

• The yellow tint improves contrast. • The thickness of the lens, com-

bined with the special “base” curve, makes objects appear slightly larger.

• The anti-reflection coating allows more light through the lens.E-Scoop lenses provide some

magnification by using a combina-tion of special lens curvature and thickness. The lenses also incor-porate a custom yellow filter and anti-reflective coatings. Dr. Stamm reports, “This is an example of two lenses definitely being better than one.”

MACULAR DEGENERATIONMacular Degeneration is the leading cause of legal blindness and reading impairment in the country. Individuals with Macu-lar Degeneration have difficulty seeing well enough to do activities

that require fine detail vision like reading, driving, recognizing fac-es, and watching television.

E-Scoop lenses can help vi-sion by improving clarity for some people. “These lenses cannot make vision perfect, but they do make things better,” said Dr. Stamm. “They also assist with night driving and glare reduction.”

ABOUT DR. STAMMDr. Robert Stamm received his bachelor›s degree in biology from Nebraska Wesleyan University and his doctor of Optometry degree from Illinois College of Optometry where he specialized in retinal disease, contact lens fittings, and low vision.

New lens technology helps correct a basic problem experienced by those with macular degeneration.

MANY PEOPLE ACCEPT that becoming forgetful and perhaps a bit daft are just part of the aging process. Cognitive health experts and research say it isn’t so.

“Sixty to 70 percent of what impacts us is lifestyle,” says Rich Shipman, a Memory Fitness facilitator with the UCHealth Aspen Club. “Yes, you may have genetics in your family that make you more at risk for things like Alzheimer’s, but you can counter genetics with lifestyle and the good news is, it’s never too late to start.”

Evidence-based programs designed to prevent memory loss and the decline of other cognitive functions includes fa-miliar lessons. They teach people the importance of exercise, diet and healthy relationships. One of the most popular of these programs is Memory Fitness developed by Dr. Gary Small, director of the UCLA Longevity Center and well-known brain health expert.

Small says, “…Many studies of healthy lifestyle habits—including diet, physical activity and cognitive engagement—are providing new insights into the prevention of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.”

Shipman feels that “if you want the most bang for your buck, be active.”

Get movingPhysical aerobic exercise, like walking, improves memory, concentration and abstract reasoning. Just five 30-minute sessions (which can be broken into 10-minute sessions) each week help keep your brain in shape.

A study of adults in their 70s reported in the Neurol-ogy journal, researchers conclude that “…physical activity was associated with less [brain] atrophy. Its role as a poten-tial neuro-protective factor is supported.”

Eat well A healthy diet is another key to keeping your brain function-ing properly. It should be loaded with fresh fruits and vegeta-bles, and limited animal products, oils and alcohol.

Dr. Cory Carroll, MD, a Fort Collins family physician, says his mission is, “To get people to understand that a healthy body and mind is influenced primarily by the food we eat. A whole-food plant-based diet is scientifically proven to promote health, while the typical American diet promotes disease. Once that message is clear, the next critical step is to show people that they can move from old, unhealthy behaviors to a new lifestyle and, the transition can be pleasurable.”

Lose the stressDecreasing stress is a third component to maintaining healthy grey matter. To achieve that, Shipman says, “We rec-ommend people do things they enjoy that calm them down. For some people, it might be reading or listening to music. For others, it might be meditation or practicing calming exer-cises like yoga. The key is to do what makes you happy.”

A strategy to prevent cognitive decline wouldn’t be complete without cognitive activity to keep neurons firing strong. “It’s important to continue to stimulate your brain,” says Diane Horak, program manager for the Health and Wellness Partnership between Colum-bine Health Systems, UCHealth and the City of Fort Collins. “And those cogni-tive activities don’t have to be compli-cated. You don’t have to work crossword puzzles all day. You can simply get out and not stay homebound and interact with other people.”

Shipman agrees. He says research shows that 10 minutes of social inter-action is equivalent to up to 30 minutes of memory work, like solving puzzles. “Social interaction is talking, listening, thinking and engaging with others.”

The bottom line? Exercise, eat well, socialize and keep learning new things. Your brain and your body will thank you.

AGING WELL IS NO MYSTERY. A stream of wisdom about living the last half of life already exists in our collective history, reflected in our own hearts and minds, in our litera-ture, and in our spiritual practices. The trick to aging with a sense of joy and fulfillment is to tap into this wisdom, real-ize it and apply it to our daily lives. The fact that you have picked up this magazine and are reading this page suggests you are already curious about the idea of aging well.

There are dozens of good books on the topic of ag-ing…but I feel the best place to start is to simply talk about it….first, within yourself, and then with those who walk the second half of life’s path with you. Ask yourself: What do I want from the second half of life? How do I want to spend my days? From what do I want to free myself so I can fully live the life I have always wanted? How can I grow spiritually and emotionally on this path, which will eventually include my physical decline and death? Take the

time to listen to your own heart, body, and mind. Sit down, take a long walk, listen, and write down what comes from within….reflect upon this inner feedback, listening for what intrigues you, makes sense, feels right and true about living positively in your remaining years.

You will be amazed what wisdom lies within you. It is usually very simple and straightforward. You might find it transformative in nature, suggesting a shift in how you see, live, and embrace life.

Then talk about it with those you know, especially those you observe living with a sense of aliveness, purpose, happiness and calm, qualities that attract you.

Notice those who appear to be aging well, no mat-ter what their circumstances may be. Ask the question, “What are your thoughts or secrets about aging well, about living in a meaningful and happy manner during this last half of life?”

A few good readsFolks share wisdom about healthy and happy aging in many books and articles. These are helpful re-sources reinforcing much of what you already know. As you read, notice what jumps out at you, what makes sense to you, and take it on as part of your wisdom of aging. A couple of good reads:

• What Really Matters, 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying, by Karen Wyatt, M.D

• Claiming Your Place at the Fire, Living the Second half of Life on Purpose, by Richard Leider.

I am sure Old Firehouse Books in Old Town, Fort Collins can order these and more for you.

From my own quiet reflecting, approaching each day with a sense of deep gratitude is the most salient message to me….to take every step, every sunset, every face, every bite of nourishment with deep appreciation, as a gift, in simple gratitude for being alive. A second thought that guides me is this: ‘Keep planting trees’! I love trees and have planted them, nurtured them, trimmed them, and put them to rest, my entire life. Metaphorically, ‘keep planting trees’ is about continu-ing to invest in life…may it be a hob-by, an art form, volunteering, writing, a social cause, nurturing relationships, loving grandchildren. Keep ‘planting

trees’, knowing that your investment will long outlive you. After all, ‘90 years is not old if you are a tree’.

I remember years ago reading Carl Jung’s insights about aging, words that have been helpful in my journey. He wrote that a major focus of the second half of life is to ‘simplify, clarify, and intensify’. Zero in on what is most important and meaningful to you and dive into it.

Finally, I have found it helpful to think of the latter part of life as a path toward completion. What is un-finished in you, what part of you has been put away that aches to be out in the sunshine of your life? What words need to be written, what pilgrimage is yet to be taken, what “mountain” is still there to be climbed? What circle is yet to be closed?

Talk about it with others……I continue to be amazed and touched as I ask others for their thoughts about aging well. They are consistently will-ing, even eager, to share their thoughts. I have yet to be disappointed with the wisdom shared. Here are some gems:

Evelyn, who copes with lung disease, says with gentle confidence, “Keep a good spirit about you and it will help you learn a deeper lesson of acceptance. I want to keep on march-ing”, she says, “even though I may have to change how I march”.

Evelyn’s words remind me of a favorite bit of wisdom from my friend Louis, “Slow down and get moving”.

Jean, whose mother lived to be 98, knows she may have three decades of life ahead of her. “I don’t want to die with my music still inside of me. I want to clarify my needs, clear out unwanted things, and make room for what the next day may bring”.

Mary, a retired software engineer talked of the desire to simplify. “I want to shift from doing to being. Put the list down for gracious sakes. And don’t get stuck in the quagmire of old regrets. See the past rather as a teacher who helps point me to a deeper understanding of who I am…worthy and loved”.

Debbie shared how it is important to accept that there is an end, but, by all means, live the process. She adds, “I want

to slide across the finish line and be able to yell out, ‘It was a heck of a ride’”. She also shares a favorite quote from Joseph Campbell: “We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us”.

Jim, a retired professor shares his philosophy of aging. ”Clarify your in-tentions, but make sure to make a plan as to how you will achieve or work toward your intentions”.

And Steve jumps right in and says, “I love life!” “Stay engaged.” “Discover what your passion may be. Apply the wisdom of aging to your unique circumstance.”

So take the next step by talking about it with yourself and others. You will find these conversations to be very rich. Most importantly, stay curious. Listen to yourself and others who are walking this human journey of aging. Keep ‘planting trees’.

IN 2005 WHEN SHE LEFT her job with a local credit union, Maria Guti-errez swore up and down she’d never work with the public again. Oh, how wrong she was.

Maria now has two part-time jobs that involve working with and for people who have special needs, chil-dren and older adults. She is a home visitor in the guardianship and conser-vatorship process for the Weld County Court system and a trainer for the state’s Consumer-Directed Attendant Support Services.

Her people skills shine through in both positions. Maria also is bilin-gual and through the years has taken advantage of volunteer opportunities where she can put her Spanish lan-guage skills to good use.

For the past four years, Maria has

volunteered for the UCHealth Aspen Club where she often converses with people in Spanish when they either call or visit the club’s Greeley office. When she’s not working directly with club members, she’s performing ad-ministrative tasks such as data entry and photocopying.

Her other volunteer positions have been with the 9Health Fair, the Na-tional Hispanic Institute at CSU and the LULAC Hispanic Dance Compa-ny, which was located in Greeley.

“I guess I’m just a social butterfly after all because I really do like work-ing with people. I just couldn’t give it up,” Maria says. “I also like meeting new people and volunteering helps me do that.”

One of Maria’s favorite memo-ries of a chance meeting was during

Al Gore’s campaign for the Presi-dency in 2000. Gore was in Denver and the LULAC Dance Company was invited to perform during the opening ceremony of one of his pub-lic campaign events. Finding himself in front of an audience made up mostly of Latinos, Gore sought out Maria backstage and said he needed someone to translate all that was said in English to Spanish. “He just handed me the script, told me to get on stage and I did it,” she says. “That was exciting!”

“I’m just not one to sit around,” Maria explains. “My husband says he gets tired watching me always on the go, but when I volunteer, I feel so sat-isfied. I get to go home at the end of a day and say, ‘Wow! I helped some-body today.’ It’s a good feeling.”

From English to Spanish to satisfactionBusy volunteer loves working with peopleKim Sharpe
