TRANSFORMING CO MMUNITIESMISSION STATEMENT

Fields of Life is committed to sharing the Christian faith by collaborating with local communities and churches in East Africa to bring about positive change through the provision of quality education, clean water, health promotion and other community based projects.

It is our passionate desire to see local partners and churches throughout East Africa strengthened and empowered to be the drivers of change in their own communities so that children, especially, are nurtured and developed to realise their potential by bringing hope and future to their nations.

NOT JUST BRICKS AND MORTAR

We believe in the power of education to change the world. The opportunity for a quality education creates the possibility of unlocking potential in the children and young people of East Africa. We partner with local churches and communities who share our desire to develop their children because we believe they will be the future change makers, influencers and leaders in East Africa. Education goes beyond bricks and mortar. We support our partner schools to be child-focused centres of excellence to enable children grow educationally, vocationally and spiritually.

Since 2008, the Quality Education Programme established a group of regional Associate Assessors, comprising of experienced teachers, to coordinate the project activities targeted at promoting quality education in target schools. Capacity building trainings targeting teachers were organised at regional levels, followed by continuous support supervision and provision of learning materials.

In the area of management, School Management Committee (SMC), Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and Head Teachers have been trained in areas of good governance, financial management, transparency, accountability and sustainability.

To share the good practices from the various schools, an annual conference was planned to target school directors and head teachers. The first conference was held in 2007, and every year thereafter. The conferences have provided the much needed attitudinal changes among the school managers through benchmarking against their more progressive counterparts for a more successful school path.

CHANGE A CHILD’S LIFE FOREVER

The Sponsorship programme adopts a community based approach which not only enables sponsored children to attend school but also underpins the sustainability of the wider school community, thus positively impacting many other children also.

The programme started in 1997 when Fields of Life started supporting construction of schools in Uganda. The programme started with close to 200 children and now grown to over 3,500 children, spread over 80 schools in Uganda. The target is to have at least 20% of the children in each supported school sponsored. And enrol approximately 5000 children onto the programme by the 2018.

We provide various avenues for the sponsored children to relate directly with their sponsors and staff through letters writing, Christmas cards exchange, camps, health talks, counselling & guidance.

Priorities is given to children from rural areas with uncertain backgrounds. Consequently, we have moved away from sponsoring children in urban schools that we built earlier as their family background suggest they could afford most of the basics needed in school.

Ms Gloria Adelle, a former sponsored student now in the University had this to say, “My biggest passion is to be a great instrument of community change and build a constructive future for rural communities with the intent to help other less privileged children just as Fields of Life has helped me to find a purpose in life.”

Clean accessible drinking water is a basic human right, essential to life, yet over one eighth of the world does not have access to it. In fact in some of the communities where Fields of Life works, there are no clean water facilities at all.

Many people suffer sickness and death due to water borne diseases and valuable hours are lost fetching dirty water over long distances. Fields of Life is committed to addressing this vital need especially amongst vulnerable and marginalised groups, such as women and children.

Since 2009 Fields of Life has been drilling boreholes in Uganda using our own specialised equipment and team. It is our goal to drill 1,000 wells by 2020 bringing clean water to over 1 million people. To date, over 400 wells have been sunk in 25 districts. Fields of Life is also committed to providing communities with access to fresh water where geology does not permit the drilling of a borehole. Rainwater harvesting is extremely successful in areas where groundwater is inaccessible due to the terrain or hard ground conditions.

The School Health Programme aims to promote good health in Fields of Life schools in Uganda through teaching curriculum-based health education and augmenting this with basic preventative treatments. The programme strives to educate and raise awareness amongst children before ill health has a chance to take hold and threaten their lives. The programme focuses on personal and food hygiene, water and sanitation as well as sexual health education.

Our view is that unhealthy children will not have the opportunity to complete their education and therefore be unable to improve their lives. That providing an opportunity for good health is the first measure to ensure equality for all children to get chance in education by creating a healthy learning environment and behaviour.

The programme, started in 2008/9 in Luwero district, is delivered through initial training for teachers and parents. To date, 38 schools have been reached and over 15,000 school children have benefited directly and over 6700 Households where these children come from have been positively influenced indirectly. About 570 school staff and 2,280 of their family members have been reached indirectly, for instance through provision of deworming drugs and Vitamin A supplementation for children below 6 years of age.

Loy Walugembe, Head Teacher of Kiti Parents’ Primary in Wakiso district had this to say, “We did not have the culture of washing hands before eating food and visiting latrines. But through simple technologies, like tippy taps, for hand washing, most of the students have now made facilities for washing hands in their homes and in the school. We now routine health programme in the school timetable.”

Fields of Life funded construction of the first school in 1996 given the poor access to educational facilities at the project sites. To date, fields of Life has supported the construction of 112 schools (784 classrooms) in East and Central Africa (87 in Uganda, 02 in Kenya, 06 in Rwanda, 16 in Burundi and 01 in Dr Congo). Our target is to support the construction of 120 schools by end of 2015 to provide more orphaned and vulnerable children enabling them to access basic primary level education.

To see children move from makeshift structures and learning under mango trees to more permanent lifelong structure is incredible.

The child evangelism programme nurtures and develops children to realise their potential to be the drivers of change in their own communities and to act as an effective Christian response to the communities.

The programme is running in 65 supported schools in Uganda. Through regular school camps, Bible Study clubs, teacher trainings, routine fellowship and Bible study in almost all school timetables, many children and staff have come to faith and have had their lives transformed. Some of the children today are serving the Church as pastors, evangelists, gospel singers and teachers of the word of God.

We closely worked with Full Gospel Church, Church of Uganda, and Pentecostal Churches to reach out to the community. We have worked collaboratively with the Nebbi, Gulu and Luweero dioceses to build capacity for Christ through the Christianity Explored programme.
