The campusFIC is located on SFU’s Burnaby Mountain campus in the

thriving and culturally diverse city of Burnaby, a 30-minute

drive from downtown Vancouver. The Burnaby campus is one

of the most awe-inspiring university settings on the continent,

offering a stunning panorama of mountains, cities, ocean and

islands from its location at the summit of 400-metre high

Burnaby Mountain.

Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Arthur Erickson, the campus has everything you’d expect of a major university, yet on a scale that will make you feel at home. The vast majority of the 28,000 students pursue their studies on the pedestrian-friendly campus, which houses administrative and academic offices, the main library, student services, on-campus residences, and the new UniverCity community of residences and shops.

For students wanting to live on campus, SFU provides fully-catered single room accommodation as well as an on-campus hotel where visiting family members can stay. Buses operate between the campus and Greater Vancouver’s rapid transit system at the foot of Burnaby Mountain on a regular basis.

Studying at FIC will give you access to all of these facilities and more.

Your English language preparationIf you do not meet the minimum English language requirements for your program, we can offer you a

number of options to improve your English language proficiency.

English ClassesWe recommend that all students take an internationally recognised English proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL before coming to Canada. To enter directly into Stage I or Stage II, all students require an IELTS score of 5.5 or equivalent, in addition to the required academic scores. If your English is not yet at that level, FIC can offer the following options:

UTP Stage I and II (Mixed)The Mixed Program is designed specifically for students who have achieved an IELTS score of 5.0 (no band less than 4.5) or equivalent. Students at this level of English will take a limited number of FIC academic courses during their first semester. In addition to the academic courses they have selected, students will study 15 hours per week of academic English at FIC.

After successfully completing the Mixed Program, students continue to take academic courses in the following semester. Mixed Programs follow the FIC intake schedule.

“PAS” in English Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS) in English is an SFU program which provides English language training for university-bound international students who have achieved an IELTS score of 4.5 (no band less than 4.0) or equivalent. PAS in English classes are also held on the

Burnaby campus of SFU, so students can enjoy the experience of studying English in one of Canada’s top universities, with access to the facilities there.

Upon successful completion of the PAS program, students are eligible to enter FIC without providing further English test scores, either directly into a UTP program or a UTP Mixed Program. FIC staff are able to offer advice regarding the PAS application process at the time of applying to FIC. PAS in English programs follow the FIC intake schedule.

Off-campus ESL collegesOur staff are able to offer advice regarding specialist ESL colleges in Vancouver for students with an IELTS of less than 4.5 at the time of applying to FIC. These ESL colleges allow students to improve their English language skills through intensive English programs. Most specialist ESL colleges have monthly intake dates.

Navitas family bursaryNavitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. The Navitas family bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study at a Navitas institution. The first family member can be studying at a Navitas institution at the same time as other family members or may have studied at any Navitas institution previously. For the purpose of this bursary, a family member is defined as a brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter or stepchild.

The family bursary is granted to the second and subsequent family members who study at a Navitas institution. The bursary is equivalent to 10 percent of the tuition fee for the first eight courses of study in the UTP Stage I and for the first ten courses of study in the UTP Stage II. It is credited to the eligible student’s tuition fee account each semester (the amount being relevant to the number of courses undertaken in that semester). Only one family bursary will be granted per student regardless of the number of family members who have studied at a Navitas institution.

Please note: For students attending FIC, the Navitas family bursary is not applicable to English language programs or any component of an English language program.
