Globalization, urbanization, diversity, social unrest, terrorism, environmental change, migration, race relations, domestic relations — this new century brings with it fantastic opportunities and potential challenges! Studying sociology or social work prepares one to successfully navigate this new century and to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of others.

Sociology is the systematic study of social life and the social causes, and consequences, of human behavior. Students of sociology gain powerful tools to examine and understand issues ranging from world events to relationships in one’s own life. With a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, a student develops strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to serve as a foundation to be useful in a wide variety of careers.

Department of Sociology and Social Work Funding Needs

The following priorities are listed in order of importance.

Student Travel FundBoth sociology and social work students are strongly encouraged to attend professional conferences. Every year the Sociology Club and the Social Work Club attempts to travel to at least one professional conference or to a field site, where exposure to potential careers occurs. Faculty sponsors from each club attend with the students. This fund will help to defray conference and field experience travel.

Faculty Development FundFaculty are required to conduct research or other scholarly activity appropriate to the profession. Funds are needed to support faculty presentations and publication fees necessary to make their scholarly findings and writings available to others in the profession and in the general public.

Endowed ProfessorshipEndowed positions help to retain the most talented faculty over the long term. Endowed professors are recognized for their exceptional teaching, scholarship and service. The State of Kansas through its Faculty of Distinction initiative will match earnings from these endowed funds, which doubles the benefits that donors to such a fund provide.
