The Department of English at Fort Hays State University offers undergraduate and graduate programs meant to instruct and train students in the teaching, analysis, and creation of written work. Our Bachelor of Arts degree program offers concentrations in Teaching, Literature, and Writing, as well as a minor in English. Students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. Sample course topics include Literature of the American South, Traditional English Grammar, and Conspiracy Theories in Literature. In addition, our celebrated Masters of Arts in English program comes in two distinct flavors: the Traditional MA and the Summer MA. The traditional degree is geared towards students who have completed their undergraduate degree and are seeking further education, while the summer program is utilized primarily by educators and returning professionals. The flexibility of this program allows for an intensive, personal, and rewarding experience for students of all backgrounds. FHSU’s Department of English also collaborates with the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany in an exchange program for students and faculty. Contact with educators and learners from other cultures serves to broaden the impact of our study program and expose our student body to new educational approaches. All of the degree programs offered through Fort Hays State’s Department of English provide students with the skills and tools needed to succeed in future endeavors. Graduate Assistance The Summer Master’s of Arts program in English at Fort Hays State was designed to accommodate the schedules of full-time teachers who want to pursue an advanced degree, but are not able to attend year-round classes. Establishing a fund to pay for graduate scholarships and to offer other financial assistance would help in-service teachers to further their education, advance their professional development, and improve their own teaching.

Visiting Speaker Program The English department would like to establish a program to sponsor visiting speakers as a way to provide students with rich experiences that would build on their existing curriculum. Funding for the program would help to pay travel and lodging fees for speakers, as well as honoraria. Speakers would meet with classes, speak to community organizations, and/or deliver a formal lecture open to the university and to the public. Specifically, the program might include a series of lectures by nationally-known writers of both poetry and fiction; professional non-fiction writers and/or editors; experts in service learning and community engagement activities; and/or presentations designed to promote diversity awareness. This program would provide valuable experiences for students in the English department, as well as the FHSU and Hays communities.

Travel AssistanceBoth undergraduate and graduate students have numerous opportunities to travel, study abroad, take department-sponsored trips (for example, those taken recently—to Mississippi, New York, Ireland, and Greece—in conjunction with English courses offered), and to state and national conferences (including the Kansas Association of Teachers of English Convention and the International Sigma Tau Delta Conference, most recently held in New Orleans, LA). Funding would help defray travel expenses for students and allow them to participate in, and take advantage of, these worthwhile opportunities.

The Fort Hays State University Foundation is an independent, non-profit corporation designated by the state of Kansas to receive gifts on behalf of the university.
